Resilience to suicidal ideation among college sexual assault survivors: The protective role of optimism and gratitude in the context of posttraumatic stress.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress symptoms related to sexual assault have been linked to greater suicidal ideation, yet little is known about protective factors that may weaken this link and reduce thoughts of suicide in the context of posttraumatic stress. Drawing on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions and prior research, psychological strengths associated with resilience, such as optimism and gratitude, have the potential to be associated with attenuated suicidal ideation among sexual assault survivors. METHOD: We tested this possibility in a sample of 425 undergraduate women wh

Intensive clinical trauma treatment for children and adolescents with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with mild intellectual disability (MID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) are at increased risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or trauma-related symptoms due to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Weekly provided treatment sessions and/or outpatient treatment may not be effective enough. AIMS: Investigate feasibility, safety and potential effectiveness of an intensive clinical trauma treatment in children and adolescents with MID-BIF and trauma-related symptoms as a result of ACEs or PTSD. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Thirty-three partic

Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder are Associated with Exaggerated Neural Response to Surprising Errors.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by exaggerated salience of previously innocuous cues and associated with hyperactivity of salience-related brain regions. Recently, computational models have been deployed to operationalize salience more precisely regarding surprise-driven learning, leading to findings that such learning is altered in anxiety-related disorders. In the present study, a sample of 20 combat veterans completed a probabilistic learning task during fMRI scanning. We applied a computational model to generate a trial-by-trial surprise signal (i.e., unsigned predict

Exploring the potential moderating role of self-compassion on the relationships between event centrality and post-assault psychological outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether post-assault internal processes (i.e., present control, event centrality, and compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding) were associated with distress and resilience among women who have experienced adult sexual assault. The authors also tested whether compassionate and uncompassionate self-responses would moderate the relationships between event centrality and outcomes. METHOD: A convenience sample of women who had experienced sexual assault during adulthood (N = 253) completed an anonymous online survey. RESULTS: Regression analyses sho

Neurobiological evidence of sexual dimorphism in limbic circuitry of US Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Female Veterans are an increasing patient population in the Department of Veterans Affairs and may have distinct clinical and neurobiological features compared to males. METHODS: Nineteen female and 19 male Veterans who met diagnostic criteria for depression/posttraumatic stress disorder (MDD/PTSD) completed diagnostic interviews, symptom measures, and resting-state neuroimaging. Participants completed clinical measures of mood and aggression in addition to magnetic resonance imaging on a 3.0 Tesla Siemens scanner. RESULTS: Females showed increased functional connectivity between

Cortical midline structures associated with rumination in women with PTSD.

Elevated rumination, characterized by repetitive, negative self-focused cognition, is common in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has been shown to predict the onset and maintenance of the disorder. Neuroimaging research has implicated cortical midline brain structures, including the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and isthmus cingulate (IsthCing), in rumination in healthy and depressed populations. While past research has revealed dysfunction in cortical midline regions in PTSD, no studies have yet investigated the structural and functional n

Gambling problems among military personnel after deployment.

Military and veteran populations may exhibit heightened vulnerability to gambling problems; however, there is scant relevant evidence outside the US, and few studies of transition periods, including return from operational deployment. The aim of this study was thus to highlight the extent, risk-factors, and implications of gambling problems among current members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) following deployment to the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO). It involved analyses of data from n = 1324 ADF personnel who deployed between 2010 and 2012, and completed surveys within four mon

Chronic elevation of plasma vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) is associated with a history of blast exposure.

Mounting evidence points to the significance of neurovascular-related dysfunction in veterans with blast-related mTBI, which is also associated with reduced [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake. The goal of this study was to determine whether plasma VEGF-A is altered in veterans with blast-related mTBI and address whether VEGF-A levels correlate with FDG uptake in the cerebellum, a brain region that is vulnerable to blast-related injury 72 veterans with blast-related mTBI (mTBI) and 24 deployed control (DC) veterans with no lifetime history of TBI were studied. Plasma VEGF-A was significantly

Neurobiology of emotional trauma.

An emotional trauma may induce a cascade of neurobiological events that have long-lasting consequences even altered gene expression. Early abuse and neglect can deregulate the child's developing neurobiological system by reducing its resistance to stressful events, leading to later problems of emotional regulation. Children who have been subjected to physical or emotional abuse tend to pay more attention to signs that contain anger and are hypersensitive to threat. Scar hypothesis and the theories of behavioural sensitization or electrophysiological kindling suggest that emotional traumas may

Maternal psychological growth following childbirth.

Although maternal postpartum mental health has been extensively studied, rather little is known regarding the factors that may facilitate psychological growth following childbirth. The present study set forth to examine various pre-birth, birth, and post-birth correlates of overall psychological growth and growth domains in postpartum women, assessed within the first months following childbirth. A sample of 428 women completed self-report measures pertaining to psychological growth, mental health, maternal attachment, and childbirth characteristics. We found that the majority of women reported

Posttraumatic stress disorder in patients after transient ischemic attack: A one-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 12 months after transient ischemic attack (TIA). METHOD: TIA patients of our previous investigation (examined 3 months after the event) were again examined 12 months after the diagnosis. PTSD and associated variables were assessed via self-rating instruments. RESULTS: Eighty-four patients were included in the analyses. Twelve months after TIA the prevalence of probable PTSD was reduced (8.3%) compared to that found 3 months after TIA (29.6%). Coping assessed 3 months after TIA predicted long-term PTSD sev

Posttraumatic Stress Symptom Severity Mediates the Relationship Between Military Sexual Trauma and Tension Reduction Behaviors in Male and Female Veterans.

Numerous studies attest to the prevalence and complex negative consequences associated with military sexual trauma (MST). However, relatively less is known about male survivors and about the interaction of psychological problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and emotion management difficulties following MST. The current study examined the path of psychological distress following MST in both male and female veterans. We predicted that (a) history of MST would predict more severe PTSD symptoms, which in turn would predict greater use of dysfunctional emotion management st

Predicting response to cognitive processing therapy: Does trauma history matter?

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) has reliably demonstrated efficacy for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for most patients, however, not all patients derive the same benefit from CPT. The aim of the present study is to identify trauma-related variables that predict differential response to CPT in a sample of treatment-seeking veterans in order to improve individual responses to CPT. METHOD: The present study evaluated demographic, therapy, and trauma-related variables as possible predictors of variable response to CPT in a sample of 259 treatment-seeking vete

Childhood Adversity and Intimate Partner Violence in Adulthood: The Mediating Influence of PTSD in a Sample of Women Prisoners.

Although past research documents strong linkages between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and adult intimate partner violence (IPV) in the lives of women prisoners, researchers have often neglected to consider the potential mediating role of PTSD in the relationships between ACEs and adult IPV. Using data from a stratified random sample of all incarcerated women in Oklahoma (N = 334), we explore the relationships between ACEs, PTSD symptomology, and adult IPV utilizing a feminist life course theoretical framework. Results indicate that PTSD symptomolo

Children's Coping and Perceptions of Coping Efficacy After Sexual Abuse: Links to Trauma Symptoms.

Despite an emphasis on coping following childhood sexual abuse (CSA) to reduce trauma-related symptoms, very few studies have researched the associations between sexually abused children's coping and trauma-related difficulties, and perceived coping efficacy has been largely overlooked. The current study investigated whether children's use and perceived efficacy of avoidant, internalized, angry, and active/social coping strategies were associated with caregiver- and child-reported posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and caregiver-reported internalizing and externalizing symptoms among 202 se

Post traumatic stress symptoms in parents of children with cancer: A mediation model.

OBJECTIVE: Caregivers of pediatric cancer patients are at risk for posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Previous literature has identified caregiver illness uncertainty as a predictor of PTSS, yet little is known about the mechanism by which illness uncertainty may affect PTSS. Rumination, or perseverations about the cause and consequences of an event, has been related to posttraumtic stress disorder in other populations. However, limited research of this relationship exists for pediatric cancer caregivers. Further, no studies have evaluated rumination in relation to illness uncertainty. The
