N1, P2 and T-complex of the auditory brain event-related potentials to tones with varying rise times in adults with and without dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty affecting the acquisition of fluent reading and spelling skills due to poor phonological processing. Underlying deficits in processing sound rise time have also been found in children and adults with dyslexia. However, the neural basis for these deficits is unknown. In the present study event-related potentials were used to index neural processing and examine the effect of rise time manipulation on the obligatory N1, T-complex and P2 responses in English speaking adults with and without dyslexia. The Tb wave of the T-complex showed differences between groups,

Neurophysiological and behavioural correlates of coherent motion perception in dyslexia.

Coherent motion perception was tested in nine adolescents with dyslexia and 10 control participants matched for age and IQ using low contrast stimuli with three levels of coherence (10%, 25% and 40%). Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioural performance data were obtained. No significant between-group differences were found in performance accuracy and response latencies of correct responses, for early (P1, N1, and P2) or late (P3) ERP peaks. However, attenuated early ERPs in the 10% coherent condition correlated significantly with lower performance accuracy (r = -.66) and with the magni

Differing causal roles for lateral occipital cortex and occipital face area in invariant shape recognition.

The human extrastriate visual cortex contains functionally distinct regions where neuronal populations exhibit signals that are selective for objects. How such regions might play a causal role in underpinning our ability to recognize objects across different viewpoints remains uncertain. Here, we tested whether two extrastriate areas, the lateral occipital (LO) region and occipital face area (OFA), contained neuronal populations that play a causal role in recognizing two-dimensional shapes across different rotations. We used visual priming to modulate the rotation-sensitive activity of neurona

Object-substitution masking modulates spatial attention deployment and the encoding of information in visual short-term memory: insights from occipito-parietal ERP components.

If object-substitution masking (OSM) arises from mask representations replacing target representations, OSM should impede the formation of representations in visual short-term memory (VSTM). We utilized event-related potentials to examine the effect of OSM on target processing. An N2pc was observed on trials with delayed-offset masks, indicating that focused attention was directed to the target. The sustained posterior contralateral negativity (SPCN), an index of VSTM storage, was observed in delayed-offset trials only on trials with correct responses. This supports the hypothesis that inaccur

Reciprocal connectivity of identified color-processing modules in the monkey inferior temporal cortex.

The inferior temporal (IT) cortex is the last unimodal visual area in the ventral visual pathway and is essential for color discrimination. Recent imaging and electrophysiological studies have revealed the presence of several distinct patches of color-selective cells in the anterior IT cortex (AIT) and posterior IT cortex (PIT). To understand the neural machinery for color processing in the IT cortex, in the present study, we combined anatomical tracing methods with electrophysiological unit recordings to investigate the anatomical connections of identified clusters of color-selective cells in

Navon letters affect face learning and face retrieval.

Identifying the local letters of a Navon letter (a large letter made up of smaller different letters) prior to recognition causes impairment in accuracy, while identifying the global letters of a Navon letter causes an enhancement in recognition accuracy (Macrae & Lewis, 2002). This effect may result from a transfer-inappropriate processing shift (TIPS) (Schooler, 2002). The present experiment extends research on the underlying mechanism of this effect by exploring this Navon effect on face learning as well as face recognition. The results of the two experiments revealed that when the Navon ta

Event-related potential study of novelty processing abnormalities in autism.

To better understand visual processing abnormalities in autism we studied the attention orienting related frontal event potentials (ERP) and the sustained attention related centro-parietal ERPs in a three stimulus oddball experiment. The three stimulus oddball paradigm was aimed to test the hypothesis that individuals with autism abnormally orient their attention to novel distracters as compared to controls. A dense-array 128 channel EGI electroencephalographic (EEG) system was used on 11 high-functioning children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 11 age-matched, typical

Listening with an accent: speech perception in a second language by late bilinguals.

The goal of the present study was to examine functioning of late bilinguals in their second language. Specifically, we asked how native and non-native Hebrew speaking listeners perceive accented and native-accented Hebrew speech. To achieve this goal we used the gating paradigm to explore the ability of healthy late fluent bilinguals (Russian and Arabic native speakers) to recognize words in L2 (Hebrew) when they were spoken in an accent like their own, a native accent (Hebrew speakers), or another foreign accent (American accent). The data revealed that for Hebrew speakers, there was no effec

Specific impairments in visual processing following lesion side in hemianopic patients.

INTRODUCTION: Following unilateral damage of the primary visual cortex one of the most common visual field defects observed is Homonymous Hemianopia (HH), a loss of vision of the contralesional hemifield in each eye. The ipsilesional ("intact") part of the central visual field is often used to compensate for difficulties encountered in the peripheral hemianopic visual field. However, the quality of vision within the central visual field is not well-known. METHODS: To better describe and understand visual processing in hemianopia, two tasks were conducted with 25 healthy controls, six left hem

Directional effects between rapid auditory processing and phonological awareness in children.

BACKGROUND: Deficient rapid auditory processing (RAP) has been associated with early language impairment and dyslexia. Using an auditory masking paradigm, children with language disabilities perform selectively worse than controls at detecting a tone in a backward masking (BM) condition (tone followed by white noise) compared to a forward masking (FM) condition (tone preceded by white noise). Tallal's (1980) auditory processing hypothesis posits that abnormal RAP leads to reduced (or impaired) phonological awareness (PA), resulting in reading and language difficulties. Alternative theories sug

Electroencephalographic evidence of sensory gating in the occipital visual cortex.

Sensory gating refers to the suppression of the neuronal response to a repeating stimulus and is considered a protection mechanism in the brain. In this study, we assessed gating of the mid-latency components of the visual evoked potentials (N75, P100, N150) in 11 healthy individuals using a paired-flash paradigm. A significant decrease of P100 and N150 amplitudes was shown; additionally, a significant increase in the latency of N75 and P100 for the second stimulus of the pair compared with the first one was also observed. Absolute power of the stimulus 2 signal at theta frequency was signific

Size sequencing as a window on executive control in children with autism and Asperger's syndrome.

A study is reported in which size sequencing on a touch screen is used as a measure of executive control in 20 high-functioning children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The data show a significant and age-independent effect of the length of sequence that can be executed without errors by these children, in comparison with a chronologically age-matched group of children with normal development. Error data and reaction times are analysed and are interpreted as revealing a constraint on the prospective component of working memory in children on the autistic spectrum even when there is no

Deficits in complex motor functions, despite no evidence of procedural learning deficits, among HIV+ individuals with history of substance dependence.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and drugs of abuse affect common neural systems underlying procedural memory, including the striatum. The authors compared performance of 48 HIV seropositive (HIV+) and 48 HIV seronegative (HIV-) participants with history of cocaine and/or heroin dependence across multiple Trial Blocks of three procedural learning (PL) tasks: Rotary Pursuit (RP), Mirror Star Tracing (MST), and Weather Prediction (WP). Groups were well matched on demographic, psychiatric, and substance use parameters, and all participants were verified abstinent from drugs. Mixed model analyse

Developmental surface dyslexias.

Individuals with surface dyslexia read via grapheme-to-phoneme conversion due to a deficit in the lexical route. A deficit in the lexical route can be caused by impairments at several different loci. In the current study we identify three subtypes of developmental surface dyslexia, each caused by impairment at a different locus on the lexical route, and each showing a different pattern of performance in various tasks. All three subtypes show the classical pattern of reading aloud, with regularizations and difficulty in reading words that have more than a single possible conversion to a phoneme

Characterization of the effects of inhaled perchloroethylene on sustained attention in rats performing a visual signal detection task.

The aliphatic hydrocarbon perchloroethylene (PCE) has been associated with neurobehavioral dysfunction including reduced attention in humans. The current study sought to assess the effects of inhaled PCE on sustained attention in rats performing a visual signal detection task (SDT). Due to its similarities in physiological effect to toluene and trichloroethylene (TCE), two other commonly used volatile organic compounds (VOCs) known to reduce attention in rats, we hypothesized (1) that acute inhalation of PCE (0, 500, 1000, 1500 ppm) would disrupt performance of the SDT in rats; (2) that impair

Performance of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on a test battery of impulsiveness.

Children with ADHD were compared to healthy controls on a task battery of cognitive control, measuring motor inhibition (Go/No-Go and Stop tasks), cognitive inhibition (motor Stroop and Switch tasks), sustained attention and time discrimination. Children with ADHD showed an inconsistent and premature response style across all 6 tasks. In addition they showed task-specific impairments in measures of sustained attention, time discrimination, and motor inhibition, but spared cognitive inhibition. Measures of impairment correlated with behavioral hyperactivity and with each other, suggesting that

The first successful case of hearing produced by electrical stimulation of the human midbrain.

HYPOTHESIS: Electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus in the midbrain can provide a safe and efficacious alternative to auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). BACKGROUND: Patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) receive limited speech recognition with ABIs. Some ABI patients without NF2 can achieve excellent speech understanding, suggesting that the limited NF2 performance is due to brainstem damage from the tumor and its removal. METHODS: An array of electrodes (Med-El ABI) was placed on the dorsal surface of the inferior colliculus in the midbrain of a human volunteer as an audito

Conjunctive visual search in individuals with and without mental retardation.

A comprehensive understanding of the basic visual and cognitive abilities of individuals with mental retardation is critical for understanding the basis of mental retardation and for the design of remediation programs. We assessed visual search abilities in individuals with mild mental retardation and in MA- and CA-matched comparison groups. Our goal was to determine the effect of decreasing target-distracter disparities on visual search efficiency. Results showed that search rates for the group with mental retardation and the MA-matched comparisons were more negatively affected by decreasing

Recovery of vision and pupil responses in optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.

The recovery of visual performance and pupil responses were investigated in patients with demyelinating optic neuritis (ON) and multiple sclerosis (MS). The pupil constriction amplitude and the time delay (latency) of the pupil response were measured in 14 patients with a history of unilateral ON in response to either achromatic (luminance) or chromatic (isoluminant) stimulus modulation. Five of these subjects were diagnosed later with MS. In addition, we measured detection thresholds for achromatic stimuli using standard visual field perimetry and chromatic thresholds using a new colour asses

Selective processing of linguistic and pictorial food stimuli in females with anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

PURPOSE: This study investigated subjects with eating disorders' selective attention to linguistic and pictorial representations of food stimuli in a version of the Stroop color-naming task. If subjects with eating disorders' attention really are biased by food stimuli, one would expect equally delayed color-naming latencies to food pictures as previous studies have found to food words. METHOD: Twenty females with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or a combination of both) and 24 female controls identified the color of Stroop versions of linguistic and pictorial representat
