Introduction Sensory neuropathies of the mandibular division of the trigeminal (V3) nerve can be debilitating, causing difficulty with daily function. It has a variety of causes, including iatrogenic injury, usually caused by third molar removal, local anaesthetic administration, implant placement or endodontic treatment. Non-iatrogenic causes include infection, primary or secondary neoplasia and various medical conditions. Objective To review the aetiology, evaluation and management of V3 neuropathy in a retrospective case-series of patients referred to a specialist nerve injury clinic over an

BACKGROUND: Anabolic steroids have the clinical effect of increasing protein synthesis in muscle and other tissues. The brain and spinal cord neurons have gonadal steroid receptors and various studies have shown at structural and molecular levels that androgenic steroids have a significant trophic effect on the brain and spinal cord.
CASE REPORT: We evaluated the effect of Oxandrolone (an FDA-approved anabolic steroid) at the dose of 20 mg/day for 3 months added to concomitant exercise strength training 3 times a week in a patient affected by a demyelinating disease, Charcot-Marie-Toot 1 (CMT

INTRODUCTION: Riga-Fede disease is a rare pediatric condition in which chronic lingual ulceration results from repetitive trauma. Neonatal teeth or underlying neuro-developmental disorders which include Down syndrome are described as causative factors, but to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of both Down syndrome and natal teeth coexisting. The need for early extraction in the presence of two risk factors is highlighted in this case report.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-month-old Sinhalese male presented with an ulcerating lingual mass on the ventral surface of the tongue.

This paper highlights features of dental rehabilitation of patients with Hamamy syndrome. A 10-year-old boy patient with Hamamy syndrome reported pain in the maxillary left central incisor, and all mandibular incisors. Intraoral clinical and radiographical examination showed enamel hypoplasia, severe dilacerated maxillary left central incisor and mandibular incisors, malocclusion, delayed eruption of teeth, taurodontism, and loss of lamina dura. Root canal treatment, strip crown and composite restorations were performed.

Our patient is a 65-year-old woman presenting with bilateral pes cavus, pronounced distal muscle wasting, weakness and areflexia. Electrophysiological findings included diffuse unrecordable motor and sensory responses. While the CMT phenotype was evident, the lack of family history and the severe, but unspecific electrophysiological impairment, was a challenge for genetic diagnosis. A sural nerve biopsy was performed, showing a severe loss of myelinated fibers with residual axons surrounded by myelin outfoldings. Whereas myelin outfoldings are a pathological hallmark of autosomal recessive CMT

INTRODUCTION: Becker's nevus is a dermatological disease sometimes associated with a malformation such as hemifacial bone dysplasia.
OBSERVATION: A 11-year-old male patient presented with a delayed growth of the left maxillary and dental impactions. At 15 years of age, Becker's nevus appeared on the upper torso, both shoulders and cheeks. Le Fort I segmented osteotomy with an iliac bone graft was complicated because of maxillary dysplasia.
DISCUSSION: The chronology of our patient's cutaneous and maxillary abnormalities was similar to previously reported cases. Conversely, the Becker's nevus

The term myiasis refers to growth of parasitic diptera in the living or dead tissue of vertebrate animal. Most cases of myiasis in humans are mild and rarely present in the mouth. We describe 2 children with severe oral myiasis that evolved to oral and maxillofacial mutilations. We discuss preventive measures.

Dentigerous cyst (DC) in the maxillary sinus is extremely rare. This study evaluated the clinical features, etiologic factors, imaging, treatment, and signs and symptoms of this type of DC. Clinical symptoms, radiographic findings, surgical methods, and histopathologic findings of 4 patients with DCs in the maxillary sinus were evaluated. In addition, we reviewed the literature reports of DCs in the maxillary sinus over the past 40 years. Our 4 patients with DC in the maxillary sinus showed the following results: (1) all the patients were males at first 3 decades of age, (2) swelling and/or ye

Transient bacteremia from oral cavity related to oral anaerobic bacteria may occur as a result of dental healthcare procedures but also as a result of daily gestures involving the gums (chewing and oral hygiene). The risk of presenting a transient bacteremia is related to oral cavity bacterial load and to the severity of inflammation in the oral cavity. Although bacteremia is transient, in patients with immunodeficiency or comorbidity, this bacteremia may cause extra-oral infections. The bacteremia rate and the identified bacteria vary from one study to the next, depending on the method used t

Microbial association distinctive features and colonization degree of different oral cavity biotope were established in healthy teenagers and patients with chronic gastritis and gastroduodenitis. There were studied mucous membrane surfaces of cheek, tongue, content of gingival crevice, oral fluid and dental plaque of 24 healthy persons of the age 12-17 years and 29 patients of the same age with gastritis and gastroduodenitis. On the mucous membranes of the ill teenagers there were found Porphiromonas type bacteria, 20% more Staphylococcus, 90% less Peptostreptococcus, 30% less Lactobacillus, 2

Levels of IL-1beta, IL-6, TNFalpha, IL-10 and TGF-beta in blood and wound of 56 patients with odontogenic phlegmons in dynamic of infection process were expected. In accordance with known facts production of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1beta, IL-6, TNFalpha in blood in acute phase of the inflammation process was much more intensive than in normal conditions. Increased proinflammatory cytokines generation led to significant raising of IL-10 concentration, but elevation of its level in blood was only at the 10-14 the days of therapy. The dynamic of these cytokines concentrations in wound were

BACKGROUND: The paradental cyst is an odontogenic lesion of inflammatory origin that has few clinical signs and symptoms apart from recurring acute episodes. A well-defined radiolucency associated with the roots or distal to the crown may be seen radiographically. The purpose of this article is to report on different aspects of two cases involving paradental cysts. In the first case, the patient complained about recurring pericoronitis. A semilunar-shaped radiolucency on the distal aspect of the mandibular third molar was noted on the periapical radiograph. In the second case, the patient's ma
