1-Chloro-3-(3,4-difluorophenoxy)-2-propanol was kinetically resolved by lipase-catalyzed esterification with vinyl butanoate in organic medium to yield the (S)-butanoate and the (R)-alcohol as the remaining substrate. In an enantioconvergent synthesis the mixture was subject to Mitsunobu esterification in one pot which converted the (R)-alcohol to the (S)-ester. The (S)-butanoate was hydrolyzed by lipase catalysis to give (S)-1-chloro-3-(3,4-difluorophenoxy)-2-propanol. The two enantiopure chiral building blocks were used for synthesis of Lubeluzole and its enantiomer respectively.

Fenazaquin (I) is a new acaricide of the quinazoline class. The photodecomposition of I was studied in aqueous methanolic and 2-propanolic solution under UV light (30 h) and sunlight (70 h) separately. The photolytic half-lives in aqueous methanolic solution were found to be 17.1 h (UV) and 38.1 h (sunlight), whereas these were 12.9 h (UV) and 29.2 h (sunlight) for aqueous 2-propanolic solution; all followed a first-order reaction kinetics. The influence of solvent polarity on adsorption behavior of DOSS (anionic surfactant) has been studied by means of electroacoustic method. DOSS substantially affected the zeta potential of titania and alumina dispersed in methanol and in hydrocarbons. In 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and 1-butanol, which have intermediate polarity between methanol and hydrocarbons, the effect of the ionic surfactant on the zeta potential of solid particles was less significant.

Alcohol-based gels have been introduced recently in many hospitals worldwide for hand antisepsis. We investigated the antimicrobial efficacy of ten gels and four rinses according to European standards (EN 1500). No gel met the EN 1500 requirements within 30 s of application, whereas all hand rinses did. The tested hand gels should be considered a retrograde step for hand hygiene because the application time in clinical practice is often shorter than 30 s; they should not replace alcohol-based liquid hand disinfectants currently used in hospitals or be implemented as first choice agents.

A method is described for the determination of vitamin D3 in a liquid multivitamin preparation by liquid chromatography. Samples are purified on a disposable reverse phase extraction (SPE) column with a mobile phase of methanol-2-propanol (97 + 3) and are analyzed on a Zorbax ODS (5 micron) column with an acetonitrile-2-propanol-water (90 + 8 + 2) solvent system. Microwaves (MWs) are often used to enhance various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Here, we demonstrate real-time monitoring of a catalyst's oxidation state in a microwave catalytic reaction using a resonance frequency. The changes in the catalyst's oxidation state during the reaction induced changes in the resonance frequency in the cavity resonator.
