Capillaroscopic findings in a case of Hajdu-Cheney syndrome.

Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is a rare disease which causes osteoporosis, digit shortening, and early tooth loss. In a young HCS female patient, the nailfold capillaroscopy showed reduced capillary height and reduced density in all affected fingers. Capillaroscopy could improve follow-up and therapy assessment in HCS. Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is a very rare connective tissue disease characterized by osteoporosis, early dentition loss and a particular phenotype as a result of enhanced NOTCH2 signaling. The pathogenesis of bone resorption and osteoporosis is not fully understood. The altered a

Assessment of bone health in children with disabilities.

Evaluating the bone health of children with disabilities is challenging and requires consideration of many factors in clinical decision-making. Feeding problems and growth deficits, immobility/inability to bear weight, effect of medications, and the nature of his or her disease can all directly affect a child's overall picture of bone health. Familiarity with the tools available to assess bone health is important for practitioners. The most commonly used method to assess bone density, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, can be performed effectively when one appreciates the techniques that make s

Update on body composition and bone density in children with Prader-Willi syndrome.

AIM: To compare body composition in children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) not naïve to growth hormone (GH) with obese and lean controls. METHODS: Participants included 12 children with PWS, 12 children with obesity (body fat percentage >95th percentile for age and sex) and 12 lean children (body fat percentage <85th percentile for age and sex) matched by age and height. Fat mass, lean mass, bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD) and BMD z-score for total body, hips and lumbar spine were obtained through dual X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: PWS had higher fat percentage in

Radiological aspects of Gaucher disease.

Advances in imaging and the development of commercially available enzyme therapy have significantly altered the traditional radiology of Gaucher disease. The cost of treatment and need for monitoring response to therapy have magnified the importance of imaging. There are no recent comprehensive reviews of the radiology of this relatively common lysosomal storage disease. This article describes the modern imaging, techniques and radiological manifestations of Gaucher disease.

Design of a pragmatic approach to evaluate the effectiveness of concurrent treatment for the prevention of osteoporotic fractures: rationale, aims and organization of a Japanese Osteoporosis Intervention Trial (JOINT) initiated by the Research Group of Adequate Treatment of Osteoporosis (A-TOP).

The aim of osteoporosis treatment is to prevent future fractures. Although concurrent treatment has been used very frequently for osteoporosis in clinical practice, there are no data on accurate and verified effectiveness of concurrent treatment for fracture prevention in patients with osteoporosis. To clarify the clinical usefulness of concurrent treatment, the Japan Osteoporosis Society has authorized the establishment of the A-TOP (Adequate Treatment of Osteoporosis) research group. The objective of this research is to establish a design for a clinical trial to prove whether concurrent trea

Changes in the radiographic characteristics of the mandibular alveolar process in dentate women with varying bone mineral density: a 5-year prospective study.

The association between skeletal bone mineral density (BMD) and mandibular alveolar bone mass has been reported to be rather weak, probably due to local functional factors. Many new investigations are therefore focused on assessing the mandibular bone structure. No long-term structural alterations have been reported in human mandibular bone with the exception of alveolar crest changes related to periodontal disease. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate dentate women to see if possible alterations in the radiographic characteristics of the mandibular alveolar bone are related to

Densitometric evaluation of skull and jaw bones after administration of thyroid hormones in rats.

OBJECTIVES: An investigation was performed by use of optical densitometry to observe the effects of different doses of thyroid hormone on bone density of skull and jaw bones and to evaluate the relationship between T3, T4, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) serum levels and bone density. METHODS: 40 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups with 10 rats in each (a control group that received 10 ml kg(-1) i.p. per day normal saline and three levothyroxine groups that received 5, 10, or 20 microg kg(-1) i.p. per day levothyroxine, respectively). Radiographs were taken of their s

Quantitative model of cellulite: three-dimensional skin surface topography, biophysical characterization, and relationship to human perception.

Gynoid lipodystrophy (cellulite) is the irregular, dimpled skin surface of the thighs, abdomen, and buttocks in 85% of post-adolescent women. The distinctive surface morphology is believed to result when subcutaneous adipose tissue protrudes into the lower reticular dermis, thereby creating irregularities at the surface. The biomechanical properties of epidermal and dermal tissue may also influence severity. Cellulite-affected thigh sites were measured in 51 females with varying degrees of cellulite, in 11 non-cellulite controls, and in 10 male controls. A non-contact high-resolution three-dim

Noninvasive techniques for assessing skeletal changes in inflammatory arthritis: imaging technique.

New imaging techniques such as ultrasound and MRI are likely to play increasing roles in the future management of patients with inflammatory arthritis, particularly those with rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthropathies. Ultrasound has a number of distinct advantages including its ability to scan multiple joints, safety, and immediately availability in clinic. MRI, however, is more sensitive and has a greater field of view because of its tomographic nature. Both modalities have the added advantage over radiography in that they can image soft tissue as well as bone. Dual X-ray absorptiometry

Prediction of fracture risk in postmenopausal white women with peripheral bone densitometry: evidence from the National Osteoporosis Risk Assessment.

Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a risk factor for fracture. Although the current "gold standard" test is DXA of the hip and spine, this method is not universally available. No large studies have evaluated the ability of new, less expensive peripheral technologies to predict fracture. We studied the association between BMD measurements at peripheral sites and subsequent fracture risk at the hip, wrist/forearm, spine, and rib in 149,524 postmenopausal white women, without prior diagnosis of osteoporosis. At enrollment, each participant completed a risk assessment questionnaire and had BMD test

Osteoporosis: prevention and treatment in anorexia nervosa.

One of the most serious and potentially permanently disabling medical complications of anorexia nervosa is osteoporosis, which greatly increases the long-term risk of bone fractures. The decreased bone density in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) is due to the many effects on bone metabolism of amenorrhea, reduced levels of insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1), high cortisol levels and weight loss. Although estrogen replacement therapy is clearly efficacious in preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis, its efficacy in AN is uncertain. Clinicians caring for patients with AN need to be aware of this

Effect of two forms of alendronate administration upon bone mass after two years of treatment.

The efficacy of alendronate in slowing the loss of bone mass, or even in increasing it, in osteoporotic patients and thus reducing the risk of new fractures has been described. Nevertheless, the way of taking this drug, together with its side effects, sometimes produces withdrawals. In this study, we analyzed if an alternative way of taking the alendronate improves the follow-up of the treatment and if it had the same effect on bone mineral metabolism than the traditional way of prescription. An open, intention-to-treat study, with follow-up of 2 yr was conducted. Eighty women suffering from p
