Mental health and substance use among international migrant workers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Previous literature showed that mental health conditions and substance use are prevalent in international migrant workers due to acculturation stress. Given the rapid increase in labour migration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, this study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of the pooled prevalence of mental health conditions and substance use among international migrant workers in ASEAN countries and to identify associated factors. We searched MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and ASEAN Citation Index (ACI) for articles published in English between January 2010 and Oc…

Depression in a Latino immigrant medical population: an exploratory screening and diagnosis.

Interviews with 48 Latino medical outpatients assessed depression via a brief self-report screening measure and a structured diagnostic interview. Twenty-eight percent of the sample received a DSM-III-R diagnosis of major depression. Validity information is provided for the screening measure, which can be used with Latino medical patients, a traditionally high-risk group for depressive disorders.

Adaption of recent Soviet Jewish immigrants and their children to Toronto.

This retrospective study examined the prevalence of depression and psychosomatic disorders among Soviet Jewish immigrants, and how such problems might have affected their children's adaptation. A 36-item English and Russian questionnaire was sent to 452 Soviet Jewish immigrants, requesting information on possible problems they or their children had had during the first three years after immigration. Ninety people responded, 78% of whom had children. Immigrants with depression and psychosomatic illness reported greater behaviour, academic, peer interaction, and child-parent difficulties in thei

[Effect of the hodja (magic healer) on Turkish psychiatric patients in West Germany--an evaluation of clinical examples].

Turkish magic healers called hodjas are working in West-Germany today. Our knowledge about their influence on Turkish patients is poor. They are consulted at least from patients with psychogenous diseases. The degree and the multiple dimensions of their influence and the possibility for the doctor to master the conflicting cultural identity of these patients is demonstrated on the base of four clinical case-histories.

A data-driven approach to identifying determinants of depression in rural Latine adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: There is a paucity of research focused on risk and protective factors for depression in rural Latine adolescents. The present study first identified variables commonly described in conceptual models of depression etiology and maintenance in Latine adolescents and rural populations, including demographic (i.e., age, sex), cultural (i.e., acculturation), familial (i.e., family conflict, familism), and contextual factors (i.e., socioeconomic strain, parental education level, discrimination-related stress). A machine learning approach was then used to understand the relative contributi…

Greater Hypertension Risk among Foreign-born Adults: Examining the Roles of Language, Nativity, and Neighborhood Deprivation in an Ethnoracially Diverse U.S. Sample.

Disparities in hypertension prevalence and management persist, particularly among ethnoracial individuals in the US. Yet, the extent to which nativity, acculturation, and neighborhood deprivation contribute to these disparities remains inadequately understood. Existing research yields mixed findings on how these factors intersect to influence hypertension risk. This study investigates disparities in hypertension risk by examining the influence of nativity, language, and neighborhood deprivation on blood pressure levels in a diverse clinical sample of US- and foreign-born patients from multiple…
