Characteristics of the acoustic reflex in response to narrow bands of noise.

Normal-hearing young adults (5 M, 6 F) were exposed monaurally for 3 min to narrow-band noises centered at .5, 1, and 4 kc/s, at 20 db above respective acoustic reflex (AR) thresholds. Strip-chart recordings (1 mm/sec) of middle-ear muscle contractions were graphed and evaluated for peak amplitude, latency, adaptation, and recovery from contraction. The relative AR amplitude was greatest to the .5-kc/s band and decreased with increasing stimulus frequency. Women exhibited greater AR than men in response to the lowest frequency of stimulation. The AR latency was significantly faster for the .5-

The application of acoustic impedance measurements to pediatric clinical practice.

This article provides background information on acoustic impedance testing and illustrates utilization of test results in pediatric clinical practice. Acoustic impedance measurement devices are presently being used successfully by hearing screening programs and by otorhinolaryngologists in clinical and hospital settings. As a diagnostic tool, the acoustic impedance bridge can have particular applicability in dealing withe young children and other difficult-to-test populations. Impedance measurements can provide physicians with objective information about the condition of the middle ear, oftent

A vast temporal continuum for sensory processing arises from a nontopographic cellular multilevel gradient.

Classification of neurons into discrete populations aids the comprehension of neuronal function. However, such simplifications do not fully reflect the complexity and gradual nature of sensory stimuli and internal representations. Therefore, heterogeneous neuronal populations might be more adequate to process and represent neuronal function compared to discrete populations. Using patch-seq recordings, we identify a heterogeneous cell population in the auditory brainstem that forms an extensive functional continuum through molecular, biophysical, and synaptic gradients. Through the interaction

A review of concurrent sonified biofeedback in balance and gait training.

BACKGROUND: Sonified biofeedback is a subtype of auditory biofeedback that conveys biological data through specific non-verbal sounds. It can be designed to provide augmented biomechanical feedback in near-real-time when provided as "concurrent" biofeedback. As a practice that developed spanning across engineering and the arts, sonified biofeedback can extend beyond simple tones and beeps, towards more fully incorporating music in movement training. Sonified biofeedback may leverage the motivational aspects of music in movement training, the neuroplasticity benefits demonstrated from participa

Therapeutic potential of gamma entrainment using sensory stimulation for cognitive symptoms associated with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder with significant morbidity. Treatment options that address the spectrum of symptoms are limited, highlighting the need for innovative therapeutic approaches. Gamma Entrainment Using Sensory Stimulation (GENUS) is an emerging treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders that uses sensory stimulation to entrain impaired oscillatory network activity and restore brain function. Aberrant oscillatory activity often underlies the symptoms experienced by patients with schizophrenia. We propose that GENUS has therapeutic potential for schizophrenia. This

Towards an electroencephalographic measure of awareness based on the reactivity of oscillatory macrostates to hearing a subject's own name.

We proposed that the brain's electrical activity is composed of a sequence of alternating states with repeating topographic spectral distributions on scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), referred to as oscillatory macrostates. The macrostate showing the largest decrease in the probability of occurrence, measured as a percentage (reactivity), during sensory stimulation was labelled as the default EEG macrostate (DEM). This study aimed to assess the influence of awareness on DEM reactivity (DER). We included 11 middle cerebral artery ischaemic stroke patients with impaired awareness having a median

Analysis of cross-talk cancellation of bilateral bone conduction stimulation.

When presenting a stereo sound through bilateral stimulation by two bone conduction transducers (BTs), part of the sound at the left side leaks to the right side, and vice versa. The sound transmitted to the contralateral cochlea becomes cross-talk, which can affect space perception. The negative effects of the cross-talk can be mitigated by a cross-talk cancellation system (CCS). Here, a CCS is designed from individual bone conduction (BC) transfer functions using a fast deconvolution algorithm. The BC response functions (BCRFs) from the stimulation positions to the cochleae were obtained by

Cortical tracking of formant modulations derived from silently presented lip movements and its decline with age.

The integration of visual and auditory cues is crucial for successful processing of speech, especially under adverse conditions. Recent reports have shown that when participants watch muted videos of speakers, the phonological information about the acoustic speech envelope, which is associated with but independent from the speakers' lip movements, is tracked by the visual cortex. However, the speech signal also carries richer acoustic details, for example, about the fundamental frequency and the resonant frequencies, whose visuophonological transformation could aid speech processing. Here, we

The unnoticed zoo: Inattentional deafness to animal sounds in music.

Inattentional unawareness potentially occurs in several different sensory domains but is mainly described in visual paradigms ("inattentional blindness"; e.g., Simons & Chabris, 1999, Perception, 28, 1059-1074). Dalton and Fraenkel (2012, Cognition, 124, 367-372) were introducing "inattentional deafness" by showing that participants missed by 70% a voice repeatedly saying "I'm a Gorilla" when focusing on a primary conversation. The present study expanded this finding from the acoustic domain in a multifaceted way: First, we extended the validity perspective by using 10 acoustic samples-specifi

Effect of tinnitus distress on auditory steady-state response amplitudes in chronic tinnitus sufferers.

Tinnitus is a bothersome disorder of primarily unknown etiology that affects a large number of people worldwide. Tinnitus distress is the most common clinical complaint by tinnitus sufferers because it strongly affects their personal and social life. Many studies have been carried out to determine the relation between tinnitus pathophysiology and electrophysiological findings such as the auditory steady-state response (ASSR). The results of such studies have been contradictory. The current study aimed to detect a possible relation between tinnitus distress and ASSR amplitudes. The tinnitus par

Effect of Auditory Discrimination Therapy on Attentional Processes of Tinnitus Patients.

Tinnitus is an auditory condition that causes humans to hear a sound anytime, anywhere. Chronic and refractory tinnitus is caused by an over synchronization of neurons. Sound has been applied as an alternative treatment to resynchronize neuronal activity. To date, various acoustic therapies have been proposed to treat tinnitus. However, the effect is not yet well understood. Therefore, the objective of this study is to establish an objective methodology using electroencephalography (EEG) signals to measure changes in attentional processes in patients with tinnitus treated with auditory discrim

The Impact of Daily Hours of Sound Therapy on Tinnitus Relief for People With Chronic Tinnitus: A Randomized Controlled Study.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sounds in the absence of extrinsic sound stimuli. Sound therapy is an option for tinnitus rehabilitation, which aims to mitigate the functional and emotional effects of tinnitus. Several studies have reported that a longer duration of sound therapy may result in a greater tinnitus relief effect. However, the relationship between the daily hours of sound therapy and the tinnitus relief effect remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the tinnitus relief effect according to the time spent in daily performing sound therapy. METHOD: Fifty-eight

Carbamazepine induces upward frequency shifts of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions.

In three subjects, we measured spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) when they were using carbamazepine (CBZ), and compared this to the SOAE measurement when they were not using CBZ. We observed 14 SOAEs showing a consistent upward shift of center frequency, related to CBZ intake. On average, the magnitude of the frequency shift increased with increasing frequency. The magnitude of the shift was 30-104 Hz, at frequencies ranging from 1.3 to 2.3 kHz, corresponding to a shift between 2.3 and 4.5%. Compared to other causes and manipulations known to change SOAE frequency, these shifts are rel

Hearing abnormalities in multiple sclerosis: clinical semiology and pathophysiologic mechanisms.

Auditory manifestations from multiple sclerosis (MS) are not as common as the well-recognized sentinel exacerbations of optic neuritis, partial myelitis, motor weakness, vertiginous episodes, heat intolerance, and eye movement abnormalities. This paper discusses four cases of auditory changes, secondary to MS, and describes the first case, to our knowledge, of palinacousis, the perseveration of hearing, despite cessation of the sound stimulus. For each we characterize the initial complaint, the diagnostic work up, and ultimately, underscore the individualized treatment interventions, that allo

Expectations of the timing and intensity of a stimulus propagate to the auditory periphery through the medial olivocochlear reflex.

Expectations concerning the timing of a stimulus enhance attention at the time at which the event occurs, which confers significant sensory and behavioral benefits. Herein, we show that temporal expectations modulate even the sensory transduction in the auditory periphery via the descending pathway. We measured the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a sound-activated efferent feedback that controls outer hair cell motility and optimizes the dynamic range of the sensory system. MOCR was noninvasively assessed using otoacoustic emissions. We found that the MOCR was enhanced by a visual cue pres

Tinnitus, Use and Evaluation of Sound Therapy, Current Evidence and Area of Future Tinnitus Research.

Tinnitus is one of the otologic symptoms seen in persons with ear pathologies. It is defined as an acoustic sensation in the ear without a corresponding external acoustic stimulus. Tinnitus is said to be generated from the higher auditory centres because of reduced feedback from the peripheral or neural component but can be an outcome of irritation at different levels of the auditory system. Several treatment modalities have been tried in the management of tinnitus, either as a single treatment or as part of combination therapy. They range from lifestyle or dietary modification, medications, s

Contributions of Auditory and Somatosensory Feedback to Vocal Motor Control.

Purpose To better define the contributions of somatosensory and auditory feedback in vocal motor control, a laryngeal perturbation experiment was conducted with and without masking of auditory feedback. Method Eighteen native speakers of English produced a sustained vowel while their larynx was physically and externally displaced on a subset of trials. For the condition with auditory masking, speech-shaped noise was played via earphones at 90 dB SPL. Responses to the laryngeal perturbation were compared to responses by the same participants to an auditory perturbation experiment that involved

A tale of two tinnituses: Does hearing status influence central tinnitus localization?

Tinnitus is a complex symptom that manifests as the perception of sound in the absence of external stimuli. There are various patient-related factors and co-morbidities associated with tinnitus, however, the impact of hearing status on tinnitus is poorly understood. Various works suggest that tinnitus may originate in the central nervous system (CNS). Reports of tinnitus resolution following central insult provide further support for this concept. Based on these reports of tinnitus resolution, a line of research evaluating deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the caudate as a therapy for tinnitus h

No Influence of Musicianship on the Effect of Contralateral Stimulation on Frequency Selectivity.

The efferent system may control the gain of the cochlea and thereby influence frequency selectivity. This effect can be assessed using contralateral stimulation (CS) applied to the ear opposite to that used to assess frequency selectivity. The effect of CS may be stronger for musicians than for nonmusicians. To assess whether this was the case, psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were compared for 12 musicians and 12 nonmusicians. The PTCs were measured with and without a 60-dB sound pressure level (SPL) pink-noise CS, using signal frequencies of 2 and 4 kHz. The sharpness of the PTCs was quan
