Enhanced 2-butanone sensing properties of CeO2/WO3 heterojunction with multilevel channels inherited from pollen biotemplate.

The ultimate optimization of natural systems in terms of "structure-function-environment adaptation" can provide inspiration for the design of advanced materials. Considering the urgent demand for efficient detection of 2-butanone in industrial safety and environmental monitoring, and the limitations of existing WO3-based gas sensors including low response intensity and poor selectivity, this research focuses on developing modified WO3-based composite materials with enhanced gas sensing performance using natural biological templates. In this work, an immersion process combined with calcination

Transcriptional mechanisms of hearing acclimatization to high altitude in rats.

To investigate auditory acclimatization to high-altitude hypobaric hypoxia, we conducted longitudinal transcriptomic analyses in Wistar rats rapidly transported from 500 m to 3,700 m. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing and hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed progressive changes, with hearing impairment at 30 days (D30) followed by acclimatization at 60 days (D60). RNA-seq of cochlear tissues identified 1,329 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) during impairment and 1,441 DEGs during acclimatization. STEM analysis linked these temporal patterns to specific biological processes: per

Sex and Gender Differences in Face and Upper Extremity Allotransplantation: A Narrative Review of Implications and Impact.

Sex and gender differences play a significant role in vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA), impacting both surgical outcomes and postoperative care. While sex refers to biological distinctions and gender encompasses life experiences and behaviors, both factors are closely interrelated in transplantation. Biological sex differences, such as immune responses, hormonal fluctuations, and anatomical features influence graft adaptation and healing, while both sex and gender-specific factors affect psychological and functional recovery. Studies indicate that men have higher mortality and

[Treatment of venous thrombosis with low molecular weight heparin. Progress and outlook].

Low molecular weight heparins are in European countries the standard of treatment for deep venous thrombosis. Initially the use of low molecular weight heparins was derived of the use of unfractionated heparin: two daily subcutaneous injections with a biological adaptation on anti-Xa activity. However, rapidly, the safety of a fixed dose based on the weight was demonstrated and the biological control is no more recommended. A new low molecular weight heparin, tinzaparin, has proved its efficiency in once a day injection, several published trials have demonstrated similar results with others lo

Altered cell function in microgravity.

Physiological changes in humans during spaceflight upon return to earth have been attributed to systemic adaptation, response to stress, and lack of normal exercise. Studies from the Skylab, SL-3, and D-1 missions have demonstrated that significant physiological alterations are seen in single cell prokaryotes and eukaryotes, as well as in animal tissues. Basic cellular functions such as electrolyte concentration, cell growth rate, glucose utilization, bone formation, response to growth stimulation, and exocytosis are modified in microgravity. Many of the physiological changes seen in humans, v

Prodigiosin in glioblastoma: mechanistic pharmacology and rationale for its development as a radiosensitiser.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) exhibits marked resistance to radiotherapy due to hypoxia, metabolic adaptation, enhanced DNA damage response, and the persistence of glioma stem cells (GSCs). Radiosensitisers have therefore become a key therapeutic focus, yet clinically effective agents remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesises current knowledge on GBM radioresistance mechanisms and evaluates prodigiosin (PG)-a marine-derived tripyrrole pigment-as a potential radiosensitiser, based on its diverse antitumour mechanisms. CONTENT: PG demonstrates multifaceted cytotoxic activit

The role of circular RNAs in mediating the protective effects of exercise against muscle degeneration and aging.

A newly identified specific category of non-coding RNA (ncRNA), circRNAs, is drawing interest for their role in controlling several biological processes including muscle regeneration, aging, and adaptation to physical activity. Unlike linear RNAs, circRNAs are very stable and can have long-lasting regulatory impact since they create a covalently closed loop structure. Emerging evidence indicates that circRNAs play a pivotal role in skeletal muscle biology by regulating myogenesis, satellite cell activation, protein synthesis, and cellular senescence-processes significantly influenced by aging.

Differential behavior responses and genetic alteration underpinning exercise effectiveness in stress-susceptible mice.

Stress susceptibility varies across individuals, influenced by genetic, molecular, and environmental factors. Hence, approaches for exercise treatment as an antidepressant and anxiolytic intervention must consider individual variability. Examining individual adaptation to exercise provides insights into the biology of such variations. We investigated the efficacy of voluntary wheel running (VWR) exercise as a disease-modifying treatment for stress-susceptible (SS) mice subjected to chronic restraint stress. A multidimensional behavior analysis revealed significant variability in VWR efficacy a

Self-adaptation of chimera states.

Chimera states in spatiotemporal dynamical systems have been investigated in physical, chemical, and biological systems, and have been shown to be robust against random perturbations. How do chimera states achieve their robustness? We uncover a self-adaptation behavior by which, upon a spatially localized perturbation, the coherent component of the chimera state spontaneously drifts to an optimal location as far away from the perturbation as possible, exposing only its incoherent component to the perturbation to minimize the disturbance. A systematic numerical analysis of the evolution of the

The Dysregulation of the Integrated Stress Response in Leukemic Stem Cells as a Marker of Treatment Sensitivity in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) persistence is sustained by leukemic stem cells (LSCs) that survive metabolic deprivation, oxidative stress, hypoxia, proteotoxic burden, and therapeutic pressure. The integrated stress response (ISR) has emerged as a central adaptive network in this process. Through phosphorylation of a subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2α) and selective translation of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4), the ISR coordinates stress-responsive transcriptional programs that may either preserve cellular fitness or promote apoptotic commitment, depending on the intens

Promoting healthy aging in occupational settings: satisfaction with life as a strategic target in the Semmelweis-EUniWell framework.

The growing burden of aging-related disease and functional decline across Europe underscores the urgent need to optimize aging trajectories rather than simply extend lifespan. Achieving this goal requires identifying modifiable determinants that shape biological, psychological, and functional aging across the life course. Satisfaction with life (SWL) is emerging as one such integrative factor, linking adaptive capacity, resilience, and long-term healthspan outcomes. In this conceptual and translational paper, we integrate evidence from geroscience, psychology, and occupational health to positi

NAF-CDA: A node-adaptive fusion model for circRNA-disease association prediction.

Accurate prediction of circRNA-disease associations is essential for uncovering disease mechanisms and prioritizing potential biomarkers. However, existing computational approaches are still challenged by sparse known associations, heterogeneous biological similarity information, and the uncertainty of unobserved associations used as negative samples. Here, we propose NAF-CDA, a node-adaptive robust fusion framework for circRNA-disease association prediction. Unlike conventional similarity integration strategies that assign fixed weights to different information sources, NAF-CDA learns node-sp

A spotlight on PTEN alterations in prostate cancer: A narrative review.

Among the molecular alterations observed in prostate cancer, PTEN loss represents a key event, functionally linked to aberrant activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Loss of PTEN function contributes to disease progression, therapy resistance and poor prognosis. This review highlights the biological significance and the prognostic role of PTEN in prostate cancer, the biologically relevant crosstalk between the PI3K and androgen receptor pathways, and the implications of this interaction for tumour adaptation and treatment resistance. We also discuss current methodologies for PTEN assessment,

Mapping diversity in African trypanosomes using high resolution spatial proteomics.

African trypanosomes are dixenous eukaryotic parasites that impose a significant human and veterinary disease burden on sub-Saharan Africa. Diversity between species and life-cycle stages is concomitant with distinct host and tissue tropisms within this group. Here, the spatial proteomes of two African trypanosome species, Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense, are mapped across two life-stages. The four resulting datasets provide evidence of expression of approximately 5500 proteins per cell-type. Over 2500 proteins per cell-type are classified to specific subcellular compartments, pr

[Bariatric surgery and psychotropic drugs : where are we now ?].

Bariatric surgery is considered an effective treatment against obesity. This intervention and the subsequent weight loss can affect several pharmacokinetic parameters leading to a possible need of dosing adjustment. Despite an increasing number of bariatric interventions, clinical recommendations are often based on theoretical principles and expert opinions. Because reliable clinical and biological parameters for adjusting psychotropic drug are not available, the use of therapeutic drug monitoring needs to be advised as a useful approach. However, it is not currently possible to predict the ef

Migraine in childhood: biobehavioural or psychosomatic disorder?

It is well documented that headache is a multifactorial disorder which includes not only genetic, biological, medical and neuropsychological factor but also psychological and personality traits. The close relationship between stress and migraine attacks and the significant psychiatric comorbidities in migraine provide evidence of a "paradigm" of tight interaction between somatic and psychological aspects in paediatric migraine. In particular in younger children, an uncomfortable situation, a psychological problem or an emotional distress is rarely expressed directly but usually through physica

Translational risk-adapted approaches to de-escalated radiation for human papillomavirus-positive oropharyngeal cancer: Past, present, and future.

Interest in the use of de-escalated radiation to treat patients with newly diagnosed human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal cancer has grown dramatically with the publication of prospective trials demonstrating the efficacy of such an approach. While the rationale for de-escalation--- namely to decrease treatment-related toxicity while maintaining the excellent rates of disease control historically observed in patients with this disease-is inherently obvious, uncertainty exists regarding how to best select patients for de-escalation. Consequently, risk-adapted strategies using a var

[Risk factors and protective factors of the insanities].

The Alzheimer's disease (AD) is multifactorial. How to explain this group of very heterogeneous factors? Many of them can be considered as biopsychosocial risk factors. In other words, the risk factors, in link with the physiological functioning and a physiopathology, are difficultly dissociable of contingencies of psychological and/or social nature. The vital lead could be the stress bound to these variables, be it biological or psychosocial. It remains to ask the question of the preventive efficiency of treatments to relieve the impact of the traumatizing events of life that entail a depress
