Rapid but narrow - Evolutionary adaptation and transcriptional response of Drosophila melanogaster to toxic mould.

Insects have adapted to a multitude of environmental conditions, including the presence of xenobiotic noxious substances. Environmental microorganisms, particularly rich on ephemeral resources, employ these noxious chemicals in a chemical warfare against predators and competitors, driving co-evolutionary adaptations. In order to analyse how environmental microbes may be driving such evolutionary adaptations, we experimentally evolved Drosophila melanogaster populations by exposing larvae to the toxin-producing mould Aspergillus nidulans that infests the flies' breeding substrate. To disentangl

Micro-Evolutionary Processes in Armeria maritima at Metalliferous Sites.

Tolerance to heavy metals in plants is a model process used to study adaptations to extremely unfavorable environments. One species capable of colonizing areas with high contents of heavy metals is Armeria maritima (Mill.) Wild. A. maritima plants growing in metalliferous areas differ in their morphological features and tolerance levels to heavy metals compared to individuals of the same species growing in non-metalliferous areas. The A. maritima adaptations to heavy metals occur at the organismal, tissue, and cellular levels (e.g., the retention of metals in roots, enrichment of the oldest le

Comparing high versus low-altitude populations to test human adaptations for increased ventilation during sustained aerobic activity.

Despite aerobic activity requiring up to tenfold increases in air intake, human populations in high-altitude hypoxic environments can sustain high levels of endurance physical activity. While these populations generally have relatively larger chest and lung volumes, how thoracic motions actively increase ventilation is unknown. Here we show that rib movements, in conjunction with chest shape, contribute to ventilation by assessing how adulthood acclimatization, developmental adaptation, and population-level adaptation to high-altitude affect sustained aerobic activity. We measured tidal volume

Computational role of exploration noise in error-based de novo motor learning.

The redundancy inherent to the human body is a central problem that must be solved by the brain when acquiring new motor skills. The problem of redundancy becomes particularly critical when learning a new motor policy from scratch in a novel environment and task (i.e., de novo learning). It has been proposed that motor variability could be leveraged to explore and identify task-potent motor commands, and recent results indicated a possible role of motor exploration in error-based motor learning, including in de novo learning tasks. However, the precise computational mechanisms underlying this

Composition and toxicity of venom produced by araneophagous white-tailed spiders (Lamponidae: Lampona sp.).

Prey-specialised spiders are adapted to capture specific prey items, including dangerous prey. The venoms of specialists are often prey-specific and less complex than those of generalists, but their venom composition has not been studied in detail. Here, we investigated the venom of the prey-specialised white-tailed spiders (Lamponidae: Lampona), which utilise specialised morphological and behavioural adaptations to capture spider prey. We analysed the venom composition using proteo-transcriptomics and taxon-specific toxicity using venom bioassays. Our analysis identified 208 putative toxin se

Evaluation of the Load Reduction Performance Via a Suspended Backpack With Adjustable Stiffness.

Backpacks are essential for travel but carrying a load during a long journey can easily cause muscle fatigue and joint injuries. Previous studies have suggested that suspended backpacks can effectively reduce the energy cost while carrying loads. Researchers have found that adjusting the stiffness of a suspended backpack can optimize its performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a stiffness-adjustable suspended backpack; the system stiffness can be adjusted to suitable values at different speeds. The stiffness of the suspended backpack with a 5-kg load was designed to be 690 N/m for a speed

A method for magnetocardiography functional localization based on boundary element method and Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm.

BACKGROUND: The magnetocardiography (MCG) functional localization can transfer the biomagnetic signal to the electrical activity information inside the heart. The electrical activity is directly related to the physiological function of the heart. METHODS: This study proposes a practical method for MCG functional localization based on the boundary element method (BEM) and the Nelder-Mead (NM) simplex algorithm. Single equivalent moving current dipole (SEMCD) is served as the equivalent cardiac source. The parameters of SEMCD are adapted using the NM simplex algorithm by fitting the measured MC

A simple model for how the risk of pandemics from different virus families depends on viral and human traits.

Different virus families, like influenza or corona viruses, exhibit characteristic traits such as typical modes of transmission and replication as well as specific animal reservoirs in which each family of viruses circulate. These traits of genetically related groups of viruses influence how easily an animal virus can adapt to infect humans, how well novel human variants can spread in the population, and the risk of causing a global pandemic. Relating the traits of virus families to their risk of causing future pandemics, and identification of the key time scales within which public health int

Phenotypic Plasticity in the Productions of Virulence Factors Within and Among Serotypes in the Cryptococcus neoformans Species Complex.

The Cryptococcus neoformans species complex (CNSC) is a common opportunistic human fungal pathogen and the most frequent cause of fungal meningitis. There are three major serotypes in CNSC: A, D, and their hybrids AD, and they have different geographic distributions and medical significance. Melanin pigment and a polysaccharide capsule are the two major virulence factors in CNSC. However, the relationships between serotype and virulence factor production and how environmental factors might impact their relationships are not known. This study investigated the expressions of melanin and capsular

Visual adaptation and retinal characterization of the Garganey (Anas querquedula): Histological and scanning electron microscope observations.

The present study was designed to provide a complete morphological description of the eye of the migratory Garganey duck (Anas querquedula) and its visual adaptation with the different surrounding environmental conditions during its migration journeys using a stereomicroscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and light microscope. The current work depends on six adult Garganey ducks that were captured from the area near and on the shores of Edku city. The obtained results revealed that the eye of the migratory Garganey duck has the features of both diurnal and nocturnal birds. The histologi

Electrophysiological correlates of perceptual prediction error are attenuated in dyslexia.

A perceptual adaptation deficit often accompanies reading difficulty in dyslexia, manifesting in poor perceptual learning of consistent stimuli and reduced neurophysiological adaptation to stimulus repetition. However, it is not known how adaptation deficits relate to differences in feedforward or feedback processes in the brain. Here we used electroencephalography (EEG) to interrogate the feedforward and feedback contributions to neural adaptation as adults with and without dyslexia viewed pairs of faces and words in a paradigm that manipulated whether there was a high probability of stimulus

Incidence of penalty corner injuries in international field hockey.

Field hockey penalty corners (PCs) put players at potential risk for injuries. This study evaluated the incidence of PC-related injuries with special regards to head injuries. Video sequences provided by the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) of 295 matches in 11 elite field hockey tournaments (2015-2016) were analysed for overall injuries and PC-related injuries in detail. In total, 13.9% of all match injuries (49/352 injuries) occurred in relation to a PC, accounting for 7.1 PC-related injuries per 1000 player match hours (95% CI 4.4-9.9). There were 11 head injuries afflicting six de

The NOS/NO system in an example of extreme adaptation: The African lungfish.

African dipnoi (lungfish) are aestivating fish and obligate air breathers that, throughout their complex life cycle, undergo remarkable morpho-functional organ readjustment from biochemical to morphological level. In the present review we summarize the changes of the NOS/NO (Nitric Oxide Synthase/Nitric Oxide) system occurring in lungs, gills, kidney, heart, and myotomal muscle of African lungfish of the genus Protopterus (P. dolloi and P. annectens), in relation to the switch from freshwater to aestivation, and vice-versa. In particular, the expression and localization patterns of NOS, and it

Lessons learned from the syndrome of oculopalatal tremor.

The syndrome of oculopalatal tremor (OPT) featuring the olivo-cerebellar hypersychrony leads to disabling pendular nystagmus and palatal myoclonus. This rare disorder provides valuable information about the motor physiology and offers insights into the mechanistic underpinning of common movement disorders. This focused review summarizes the last decade of OPT research from our laboratory and addresses three critical questions: 1) How the disease of inferior olive affects the physiology of motor learning? We discovered that our brain's ability to compensate for the impaired motor command and im

Consensus Paper. Cerebellar Reserve: From Cerebellar Physiology to Cerebellar Disorders.

Cerebellar reserve refers to the capacity of the cerebellum to compensate for tissue damage or loss of function resulting from many different etiologies. When the inciting event produces acute focal damage (e.g., stroke, trauma), impaired cerebellar function may be compensated for by other cerebellar areas or by extracerebellar structures (i.e., structural cerebellar reserve). In contrast, when pathological changes compromise cerebellar neuronal integrity gradually leading to cell death (e.g., metabolic and immune-mediated cerebellar ataxias, neurodegenerative ataxias), it is possible that the

The molecular basis of venom resistance in a rattlesnake-squirrel predator-prey system.

Understanding how interspecific interactions mould the molecular basis of adaptations in coevolving species is a long-sought goal of evolutionary biology. Venom in predators and venom resistance proteins in prey are coevolving molecular phenotypes, and while venoms are highly complex mixtures it is unclear if prey respond with equally complex resistance traits. Here, we use a novel molecular methodology based on protein affinity columns to capture and identify candidate blood serum resistance proteins ("venom interactive proteins" [VIPs]) in California Ground Squirrels (Otospermophilus beechey

Cardiac metabolomic profile of the naked mole-rat-glycogen to the rescue.

The African naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is unique among mammals, displaying extreme longevity, resistance to cardiovascular disease and an ability to survive long periods of extreme hypoxia. The metabolic adaptations required for resistance to hypoxia are hotly debated and a recent report provides evidence that they are able to switch from glucose to fructose driven glycolysis in the brain. However, other systemic alterations in their metabolism are largely unknown. In the current study, a semi-targeted high resolution 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) metabolomics investigat

Rearing Temperature and Fatty Acid Supplementation Jointly Affect Lipid Fluorescence Polarization and Heat Tolerance in Daphnia.

The homeoviscous adaptation hypothesis states that the relative abundance of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in membrane phospholipids of ectothermic organisms decreases with increasing temperatures to maintain vital membrane properties. We reared Daphnia magna at 15°, 20°, and 25°C and increasing dietary concentrations of the long-chain PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to test the hypothesis that the well-documented increase in heat tolerance of high-temperature-reared Daphnia is due to a reduction in body PUFA concentrations. Heat tolerance was assessed by measuring the time to immobilit
