Couples' Experiences Managing Young-Onset Dementia Early in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created unexpected stressors for society and could disproportionately affect more vulnerable groups. One such group is couples facing young-onset dementias (YOD), who experience pandemic-induced stressors alongside ongoing YOD-related stressors (e.g., progressive symptoms, increased caregiving needs). Using a qualitative design, our objective was to characterize the experiences of couples living with YOD early in the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on couples' 'relationships' and well-being. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHO

Tell Me Your Story: A Case Report on the Use of Occupational Storytelling in the Treatment of a Subject with an Upper Extremity Burn Injury and Complex Psychosocial Issues.

Recovering from a burn can leave a burn survivor struggling to cope with the physical and psychological trauma of their injury. Finding new ways to encourage positive coping strategies and strengthen their sense of self-efficacy and occupational identity can help to encourage the burn survivor to actively participate in their recovery and thereby increase their resiliency after injury. Occupational storytelling is a treatment strategy that utilizes the client's occupational history and experiences to form their life story. Utilizing this technique with the Kawa Model as the practice model and

Introduction to defensive behavior in vertebrates.

In this introductory chapter we describe the ethological basis of defensive behavior, including tonic immobility (TI). The defensive repertoire activated in response to threatening stimuli, both in natural and experimental conditions, consists of a system of interrelated behaviors influenced by two main dimensions, as distance from the threat and escapable/inescapable context. When the active strategy of escape is not feasible, passive immobility forms are adopted, the latter representing substitutes of actual escape. In an inescapable context, and at very short distance or in contact with the

The Effect of Physical Limitations on Depressive Symptoms Over the Life Course: Is Optimism a Protective Buffer?

OBJECTIVES: We examined the extent to which optimism buffers the effects of physical limitations on depressive symptoms across 4 mid- and later-life age groups (ages 40-49, 50-64, 65-74, 75 and older at baseline). Analyses are motivated by stress theories, which propose that the protective effects of coping resources are evidenced only at high levels of stress. We further explore whether these purportedly protective effects diminish with age, as health-related stressor(s) intensify and become irreversible. METHODS: We use data from 2 waves (2004-2006 and 2013-2014) of the Health and Retiremen

Role of pregaming motives in accounting for links between maladaptive personality traits and drinking consequences.

College students are at heightened risk of engaging in unhealthy alcohol use that leads to negative consequences (e.g., motor vehicle accidents, poor academic performance). Understanding how individual differences, such as maladaptive personality traits, contribute to that risk could improve intervention efforts. A potential pathway through which personality confers risk for consequences is by influencing students' motivation to drink. In this study of 441 college students, we investigated whether different motivations to pregame, a particularly risky and common drinking practice on college ca

Online Gambling Activity, Pay-to-Win Payments, Motivation to Gamble and Coping Strategies as Predictors of Gambling Disorder Among e-sports Bettors.

Research on esports activity usually captures it from the perspective of involvement in gaming. This study presents the results of the first research in Poland (N = 438) on esports betting (ESB). ESB is compared to other forms of e-gambling and involvement in pay-to-win games. The aim was to build a predictive model of gambling disorder among people betting on esports. A predictive model of gambling disorder based on ordinal regression was built, including sociodemographic variables, involvement in esports betting, involvement in other Internet activities connected to ESB, as well as psycholog

The experience of a sample of individuals in the United Kingdom living in the pre-manifest stage of Huntington's disease: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

This paper explores the experience of ten individuals living in the UK who were in the pre-manifest stage of Huntington's disease (HD), a genetic neurodegenerative condition. Data were gathered using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three themes were reported from the data: 'feeling limited by time', 'the perception of stalling time', and 'making the most of time', all highlighting the way in which time holds significant meaning when living in the pre-manifest stage of HD. This study has highlighted the difficulties experienced by individu

Relevance of Religiosity for Coping Strategies and Disability in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

Coping strategies are essential for the outcome of chronic pain. This study evaluated religiosity in a cohort of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), its effect on pain and other symptoms, on coping and FMS-related disability. A total of 102 FMS patients were recruited who filled in questionnaires, a subgroup of 42 patients participated in a face-to-face interview, and data were evaluated by correlation and regression analyses. Few patients were traditionally religious, but the majority believed in a higher existence and described their spirituality as "transcendence conviction". The cop

Coping and rumination as mediators in the development of reactive embitterment in the general population.

OBJECTIVE: Embitterment encapsulates reactive emotions such as worthlessness or helplessness after negative life events that contravene one's basic beliefs. However, no psychological model of the development of persistent embitterment has yet been investigated. We examined mediating factors for reactive embitterment, focusing on cognitive processes, including coping and rumination, among young South Korean adults. METHOD: A total of 1,000 young adults aged 18-35 answered an online survey questionnaire measuring distress caused by negative life events, coping strategies, rumination, and embitt

Patient perfectionism and clinician impression formation during an initial interview.

OBJECTIVES: The negative impact of pre-treatment patient perfectionism on therapeutic alliance and outcomes has been well documented. However, there is much to learn about how patient perfectionism impacts the development of the therapeutic alliance. Our study addressed this by examining the extent to which trait and self-presentational components of perfectionism influence clinician's perceptions of patients during an initial interview. DESIGN: In a re-analysis of data from Hewitt et al., 2008, Psychiatry, 71, 93-122, participants were 90 treatment-seeking adults (aged 19-64, Mage  = 36.2; 4

Childhood Trauma and Maladaptive Daydreaming: Fantasy Functions and Themes In A Multi-Country Sample.

We analyzed responses of 539 adults who met an evidence-based criterion for probable maladaptive daydreaming (MD). Their reported childhood traumata were associated with the utilization of MD to distract from painful memories. A history of childhood physical and emotional neglect as well as emotional abuse was associated with daydreaming aimed to regulate emotional pain. Childhood exposure to physical and emotional abuse was associated with an increased likelihood of daydreaming about an idealized version of their original families. Themes of emotional suffering were associated with exposure t

Phagophobia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Phagophobia is a rare disorder and the literature is sparse. There is no specific treatment described for this life threatening condition. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 25-year-old Sri Lankan female with recurrent difficulty in swallowing. Following her initial episode which lasted one year, she presented to us with inability to swallow for one week. She was dependent on liquids and semisolids. The medical team confidently excluded an organic cause. She had difficulty swallowing solids with behaviours like swallowing with the aid of water and swallowing small boluses. She ha

The Sweet Hereafter by Atom Egoyan: extreme loss and psychic survival.

In a small mountain community of British Columbia a school bus swerves off the road, causing the death of 14 children. Mitchell Stephens, a New York lawyer, immediately enters the fray with the idea of instigating a large-scale lawsuit to obtain compensation for the victims, making contact with each of the parents who had lost children in the accident. Many are persuaded to join his cause. The lawyer, bombarded by phone calls from his daughter, a drug addict, even turns to Dolores Driscoll, the bus driver, who survived the accident. The latter, however, with the support of her paraplegic husba

Couples' attributions for work function changes in prodromal Huntington disease.

People who have tested positive for the expanded Huntington disease (HD) gene who are not yet diagnosed (pre-HD) and their companions report subtle changes in ability of people with pre-HD to do their jobs. However, it is not known whether they attribute these changes to HD. Semi-structured telephone interviews were analyzed from seven persons with pre-HD at different estimated points from diagnosis and six companions. Data were analyzed using qualitative analysis methods. Participants made attributions related to health, work, and temperament. Only one participant attributed a change to HD. T

The existential necessity of midlife change.

As life expectancy in the West increases and companies can no longer promise lifelong security, many businesspeople will need to make major changes during middle age, embarking on a second life and a second career. They must start by getting beyond two pervasive and opposing myths. The first is that midlife marks the onset of decline. Problems do arise during middle age--concerns about health and finances, for instance--but one's life force does not expire at 65, nor do possibilities vanish. In fact, by middle age, most executives have gained a freedom that only self-knowledge can impart, and
