Adenoid cystic carcinoma of head and neck: Summary and review of imaging findings.

PURPOSE: Current reports of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck (ACC) are all case reports, and there is no basilar summary of its imaging findings. This study aims to summarise ACC's computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings to improve radiologists' knowledge of this disease. METHODS: We collected clinical and imaging data of patients with ACC during the last decade, and two radiologists retrospectively analysed the imaging characteristics. RESULTS: Of the 16 patients included, six were able to self-perceive bulkiness, and 11 had regional pain. Tumour

A case report: An unusual presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland.

RATIONALE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the most common malignant epithelial tumor of the lacrimal gland with the highest malignant degree. ACC of the lacrimal gland is characterized by symptoms of <1 years duration. We present a 38-year-old male patient who complained of an enlarging mass in the left lacrimal fossa for almost 10 years previous to the diagnosis of ACC. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 38-year-old male patient visited our ophthalmology clinic with a chief complaint of a mass in his left upper lid, which had enlarged significantly over the previous months. DIAGNOSES: Magnetic resonanc

A Rare Nasopharyngeal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumor that involves the salivary glands and is rarely seen in the nasopharynx. It is characterized by pain, a high rate of recurrence, and poor survival rate and poor prognosis as it tends to invade the perineurium. Due to the ambiguity of patient presentations, most patients present at a late stage, at which point metastasis has already occurred. CASE REPORT The patient in this case report was an otherwise healthy 56-year-old male smoker who presented to the clinic in March 2022 complaining of nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, recurre

Coexistence of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma and Sialolithiasis in Submandibular Gland: Case Report.

Sialolithiasis is the primary cause of swelling in the major salivary glands. The etiopathogenesis is not clear. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a slow-growing salivary gland malignancy with a poor prognosis. There are only a few cases in the literature reporting the coexistence of sialolithiasis and adenoid cystic carcinoma. In this report, we present a case that was thought to have sialolithiasis in the foreground because of the calcified image on computed tomography, but was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma after excision, together with a discussion of the relationship between sialolithi

Gnathic variant of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma: A unique case report.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (AdCC) is an uncommon malignant epithelial salivary gland neoplasm, which is indolent yet persistent. Intraosseous /central variant of AdCC of the jaw is poorly understood owing to its innocuous clinical presentation thus posing a diagnostic challenge. AdCC is characterized by perineural invasion, late distant metastasis and a high recurrence rate , thus having a major effect on the mortality and morbidity rate. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage which is chiefly achieved through histological examination and complete clinic-radiological work up. A clinical case

The role of carbon-ion radiotherapy in the treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasopharynx.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (NACC) is a distinct subgroup of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) with limited surgical access but predilection of regional and distant metastasis. Although radiotherapy is an integral treatment for patients with NACC, photon-based radiotherapy yielded suboptimal local control. Because of its advantages in biology and physics properties, carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) was attempted for the treatment of head and neck ACC; however, the use of CIRT specifically for NACC has not been investigated. METHODS: Patients with NACC that received CIRT alo

Segmental resection of the main left bronchus due to adenoid cystic carcinoma.

The autosomal dominant neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) CLN4 is caused by mutations in the synaptic vesicle (SV) protein CSPα. We developed animal models of CLN4 by expressing CLN4 mutant human CSPα (hCSPα) in Drosophila neurons. Similar to patients, CLN4 mutations induced excessive oligomerization of hCSPα and premature lethality in a dose-dependent manner. Instead of being localized to SVs, most CLN4 mutant hCSPα accumulated abnormally, and co-localized with ubiquitinated proteins and the prelysosomal markers HRS and LAMP1. Ultrastructural examination revealed frequent abnormal membrane

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma - An onerous task for clinicians and pathologists.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant neoplasm usually confined to the salivary glands, lungs, and breasts. Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is an extremely rare entity with solitary cases reported at sites away from the scalp and chest. Hence, one must follow the multidisciplinary approach to exclude any primary ACC elsewhere in the body. We report a rare case of PCACC arising from the skin of the left lower limb in a 55-year-old woman with a history of recurrent swelling, clinically diagnosed as a metastatic tumor.

Efficacy and safety of anlotinib in metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumor lacking effective therapies. We evaluated a multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor anlotinib in patients with metastatic ACC. METHODS: From September 2018 to October 2020, nineteen patients with histologically confirmed metastatic ACC of any primary site were treated with anlotinib 12 mg orally per day at the two-week on/one-week off schedule at a single institution. Disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded. RESULTS: The D

Adenoidal-Nasopharyngeal Ratio in Healthy Adults on Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the adenoidal-nasopharyngeal ratio (ANR) in a cohort of healthy adults on cone beam computed tomography (CT) using the Fujioka method, which is a reproducible measure of adenoid size and nasopharyngeal patency. METHODS: Electronic health records and maxillofacial cone beam CT in 202 consecutive patients aged 16 years and older were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with a history of adenoidectomy, sinonasal disease, lymphoproliferative disorders, and cleft palate were excluded from the study. The midsagittal reconstructed cone beam CT image was used to

Adenoid cystic carcinoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: synchronous presentations in the lung.

A 59-year-old male active smoker presented with a 6-month history of cough and breathlessness and was found to have a right upper lobe mass. Histology revealed this to be an adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lung, while local lymph node dissection revealed a synchronous diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). The connection between CLL and solid organ malignancy is well documented, but the reporting of ACC in this context is novel. Mechanisms linking the two processes are revealed with the possibility of causality, and heightened vigilance for the development of primary lung tumo

18F-FDG PET/CT of Primary Tracheal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma in the trachea is a very rare tumor. A 40-year-old woman presented with persisting cough and wheezing over 2 months. A CT scan showed a mass in the tracheal wall. The bronchoscopic biopsy confirmed adenoid cystic carcinoma. 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed to evaluate the tracheal mass, which showed an FDG-avid mass in the right posterior tracheal wall.

Role of Postoperative Radiotherapy in Nonmetastatic Head and Neck Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor that is prone to local recurrence. The NCCN Guidelines for Head and Neck Cancers recommend that all patients with ACC receive postoperative radiotherapy (PORT). However, whether PORT can improve local control and which patients can benefit from PORT are unknown. This study aimed to assess the role of PORT and provide individualized suggestions for postoperative therapy in patients with ACC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with nonmetastatic head and neck ACC who underwent surgery with

A pilot study for presence of circulating tumour cells in adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare salivary gland neoplasm with a poor long-term prognosis due to multiple recurrences and distant metastatic spread. Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) are tumour cells shed from a primary, recurrent, or metastatic cancer that are detectable in the blood or lymphatics. There is no literature to date confirming the presence of CTCs in ACC. The aim of this study was to determine whether CTCs are detectable in ACC. Blood samples were collected from eight patients with histologically confirmed ACC. The TNM stage of the tumour was recorded, as well as any prior t

Recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of paranasal sinuses: A rare case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a distinct salivary gland neoplasm that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary gland. ACC is an uncommon tumor that progress slowly affecting 5% of paranasal sinuses with high distant metastasis rate in advance stages. This salivary gland tumor is difficult to diagnose both clinically and histopathologically due to its indolent presentation and diverse histopathological patterns. Hence, immunohistochemistry plays a decisive role in diagnosing this tumor. A recurrent case of ACC of paranasal sinuses in the maxillary sinus of a 41-year-old female patient wit
