How childhood maltreatment and violence victimization contributes to subsequent violent behavior remains an understudied area. We examined 130 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents and compared those with a history of perpetrating violence to those without a history of violence perpetration. Perpetrators of physical violence were significantly more likely to have been a victim and/or witness to family and community violence and also reported significantly higher levels of a broad range of psychopathology than nonperpetrators. Correlational analyses with the study group of violence perpetrat

BACKGROUND: Data describing inpatient health care utilization in children with nephrotic syndrome and related severe complications are limited. Our goals were to describe the charges, length of stay (LOS), and number of hospitalizations among children, adolescents, and young adults with nephrotic syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Youth substance use is associated with significant psychological, neurological, and medical complications. Risk factors for substance use among children and adolescents in the general population include peer and/or parental substance use, certain psychiatric illnesses (eg, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, depression), and history of maltreatment. Co-occurring substance use and psychiatric illness have been associated with increased suicidality, but few prior studies have characterized substance use among child/adolescent inpatients. As such, it remains uncle

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a combined detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection using the tuberculosis (TB)-specific cytokine interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) release assays in hospitalized children and adolescents with TB, evaluate the clinical value of this technique in the diagnosis of active TB in children and adolescents, and to analyze the related influencing factors.
METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted to collect data from suspected pediatric and adolescent TB patients hospitalized at Chengdu Public Health Clinical Medical Center between A

Adolescent mental health was a major problem during the COVID-19 pandemic. We determined the extent to which adolescents with a history of adversity were at risk of mental health hospitalization during the pandemic. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study of 303,378 adolescents from Quebec, Canada, who were age 10-14 years at the start of the pandemic. The main exposure was early life adversity, which included childhood adversity as well as maternal history of adversity or mental illness. The main outcome was hospitalization for a psychiatric disorder, substance use disorder, or suicide attem

PURPOSE: We aim to estimate the odds of UTI-related hospital care in spina bifida (SB) patients aged 18 to 25 years as compared with patients with SB in adolescence (11-17 years) or adulthood (26-35 years). We hypothesize that patients with SB in the typical transitional age, 18 to 25 years, will have higher odds of UTI-related hospital care as compared to adolescent SB patients or adult SB patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using Cerner Real-World Data, we performed a retrospective cohort analysis comparing SB patients to age- and gender-matched controls. SB cases between 2015 and 2021 were id

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to describe the incidence and demographics of pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Korea.
METHODS: We identified non-traumatic OHCA patients aged less than 20 years from a Korean nationwide OHCA registry (2006-2007). Data from emergency medical service (EMS) run-sheets and hospital records were reviewed. We excluded cases with unknown hospital outcomes. Patient characteristics, treatment by EMS, and outcomes were compared by age groups: infant (<1 year), children (1-11 years), and adolescents (12-19 years).
RESULTS: A total of 971 patients in

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis (EMs) is a chronic and progressive disease that, if diagnosed late, can lead to infertility and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). Dysmenorrhea is the most prominent symptom of EMs. However, limited research exists on the specific correlation between dysmenorrhea patterns and EMs. Early prevention of EMs is essential to effectively manage the progression of the disease, and is best detected during adolescence. Our objective was to associate the development of EMs with dysmenorrhea patterns during adolescence and quantify the risk of adult EMs for adolescent girls,

Background Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are significant public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Adolescents, especially girls, are at a heightened risk due to increased iron requirements during growth and menstruation. Objective This study aimed to estimate the hospital prevalence of ID and IDA among adolescent girls attending the Outpatient Department (OPD) at a tertiary care centre in Bihar, India. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, India, from J

The concept of major depressive disorder in childhood and adolescence is reviewed and it is suggested that contemporary enthusiasm for this diagnosis may have outrun the evidence that it is a distinct categorical entity. To test the hypothesis that major depression is not a qualitatively distinct disorder in adolescence, but rather a continuously distributed, noncategorical syndrome, the behavioral rating scales (CBCL-P) of 216 hospitalized adolescent patients were analyzed first by principal components analysis and then by cluster analysis. Three behavioral syndromes were isolated by principa

OBJECTIVE: This study compared sociodemographic and clinical profiles of adult patients with lifetime DSM-5-defined anorexia nervosa (AN) categorized by age-of-onset using data from U.S. national sample of adults.
METHOD: Study included 216 participants from Third National Epidemiological Survey Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III) who met criteria for lifetime AN based on structured diagnostic interviews (AUDADIS-5) with age-of-onset prior to age 25. Of the 216 participants, 30 were categorized as child-onset (<15 years old), 104 adolescent-onset (15-18 years of age), and 82 "emerging

OBJECTIVE: To analyze an association of eating disorders (EDs) to reproductive health outcomes among former adolescent psychiatric inpatients, hospitalized between the ages 13 and 17 years. The register-based follow-up information on psychiatric comorbidity and use of prescribed addictive psychotropic medication up to early adulthood were also explored.
METHODS: A total of 31 (10.3%) women with a diagnosed ED were identified from the initial sample of 300 female adolescents, treated in psychiatric inpatient care between 2001 and 2006. The K-SADS-PL and EuropASI research instruments were used

INTRODUCTION: Despite its known contribution to adolescent depression and suicide risk, low positive affect (PA) remains underemphasized in clinical interventions, with limited evidence on how to best enhance it. Using data from a pilot randomized controlled trial of a brief PA-enhancing intervention for high-risk youth, we hypothesized that increases in PA over the intervention period would prospectively predict lower depressive symptoms and suicide ideation (SI). We also hypothesized that increases in mindfulness, savoring, and gratitude would prospectively predict higher PA and lower depres

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric hospitalizations are a missed opportunity for delivery of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination. In this study, the authors' aim was to increase HPV vaccination rates among adolescents cared for by the pediatric hospital medicine (PHM) service at our academic children's hospital.
METHODS: This quality improvement (QI) study included adolescents ≥13 years who were discharged from PHM. Interventions included: modification of discharge order sets to include vaccination status and provider training seminars regarding the delivery of the HPV vaccine. Follow-up materials

BACKGROUND: Child Guidance Centers (CGCs) play a central role in child protection in Japan, yet evidence on abused children referred to psychiatric services remains limited. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 84 children referred by CGCs (2019–2023) to a child and adolescent psychiatry department. Demographics, types of abuse, neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs), prior psychiatric care, hospitalization, and experiences of sexual violence by non-caregivers were extracted from medical records and CGC referral forms. Fisher’s exact test, Pearson’s chi-square test, and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test
