Developing a programme of transitional care for adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: results of a postal survey.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the transitional needs of adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), as perceived by a range of professionals, and to examine how these needs may be addressed within a structured programme of transitional care. METHODS: Postal surveys (n = 1670) were distributed to key professionals employed in health, social support, education and vocation. RESULTS: Surveys were completed by 478 individuals. The majority of respondents (91%) were currently active in the care of adolescents with JIA. Planning for transitional care was perceived to be important for both adole

Improving the fit: adolescents' needs and future programs for sexual and reproductive health in developing countries.

Demand is growing in developing countries for sexual and reproductive health programs for young people. However, little scientifically based evidence exists about which program approaches are most effective in shaping healthy behaviors. Careful evaluation and research must be increased, but meanwhile, planners need guidance as they expand programming. Research indicates that current programs often do not match the needs and health-seeking behaviors of young people. Behavioral theories and expert opinion agree that adolescents must be taught generic and health-specific skills necessary for adop

Characterization of the scoliosis that develops after pinealectomy in the chicken and comparison with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in humans.

STUDY DESIGN: The characteristics of the scoliosis that develops after pinealectomy in young chickens were determined from weekly posteroanterior radiographs. These data were compared with similar data collected from human patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the scoliosis produced in young chickens after pinealectomy and to compare these characteristics with those seen in human patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although it has been recognized that pinealectomy produces scoliosis in chickens, the characteristics o

Influence of morphine exposure during adolescence on the sexual maturation of male rats and the development of their offspring.

The effects of adolescent morphine exposure on the sexual maturation of male rats, their reproductive capacity and the development of their progeny were examined. Groups of prepubescent male rates (25-27 days of age) were implanted with morphine- or placebo-pellets (one on Day 1, then two pellets on Days 4, 7 and 10); the pellets were not removed to assure the sustained release of morphine for 3 to 4 weeks and to avoid the confounding effects of a precipitated withdrawal syndrome. Groups of animals were sacrificed at weekly intervals through adulthood for an assessment of reproductive endocrin

Tooth development in children with cleft lip and palate: a longitudinal study from birth to adolescence.

Dental maturity was assessed in 131 children with cleft lip with or without cleft palate in two age groups from panoramic X-rays using the method of Demirjian. The subjects showed a mean delay of 6 months in the age group of 3-9 years (x = 6.4 years), which decreased to 2 months in the age group of 8-14 years (x = 11.0 years). Involvement of the palate made the delay longer than in children with cleft lip only. Geographical differences between parts of Finland were also found. To study tooth development longitudinally, the timing of the beginning of calcification of one maxillary central incis

Cardiac rhythm development: A wearable device index of risk for physical and mental illness in adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: The autonomic nervous system, which regulates cardiac rhythm, undergoes pronounced maturation across adolescence. How cardiac rhythm develops over this period, however, and whether individual differences in its development forecast mental and physical illness, remain open questions. We used three waves of Fitbit data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to characterize the developmental trajectory of the cardiac rhythm and to test whether variation in that trajectory predicts onset of psychopathology and cardiometabolic disease. METHODS: 8,301 adolescents co

Peer Dependency Anxiety in Adolescence: Development and Initial Psychometric Evaluation of an Arabic-Language Measure.

BACKGROUND: During adolescence, peer relationships play a central role in identity development and emotional adjustment. Excessive worry and distress about the potential or actual loss of peer support referred to as peer dependency anxiety may increase vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Despite its significance, no validated measure exists for Arabic-speaking adolescents. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the Peer Dependency Anxiety Scale (PDAS) among Jordanian adolescents. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed in Jordan in 2025. In the qualitative phase, items were genera

Differences in Social Anxiety and Friendship Quality Among Adolescents With ADHD and Their Typically Developing Peers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined differences in social anxiety and friendship quality between Egyptian adolescents diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their typically developing (TD) peers. It further investigated gender differences within the ADHD group and examined whether participant group (ADHD vs. TD) moderates the direction and strength of this relationship. METHODS: The sample included 383 adolescents aged 13-17 years (M = 15.03, SD = 1.44), comprising 173 adolescents diagnosed with ADHD and 210 TD peers. Using a comparative descriptive design, participants

Development of a mobile application for screening the risk of premarital sex among adolescents in Northern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Despite existing efforts, premarital sex among Thai adolescents remains a critical public health concern, exacerbated by nearly universal smartphone access and prolonged daily digital exposure. Traditional surveillance often fails to provide the real-time, private intervention needed in this digital era. This research and development (R&D) design aimed to develop a mobile application for screening the risk of premarital sex among adolescents in Northern Thailand. METHODS: This research and development (R&D) study was conducted in three phases: (1) identifying 14 significant factor

Transdiagnostic divergent neural development of reward anticipation in early adolescents at risk for depression and psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Reward anticipation is a transdiagnostic factor relevant to both depression and psychosis. Adolescence is a critical neurodevelopmental period when these reward-related circuits-including frontostriatal, limbic/insular, and striatal circuits may contribute to shared vulnerability across disorders, yet longitudinal transdiagnostic comparisons in early adolescents remain scarce. METHODS: Longitudinal functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data acquired during the monetary incentive delay (MID) task were analyzed in 1839 adolescents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Developme

Development, feasibility and usability of an app for the correct nutrition of children and adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: Proper nutrition during cancer treatment is crucial for children and adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), as malnutrition can impact treatment tolerance, survival, and quality of life. In ALL specifically, malnutrition at diagnosis has been associated with increased risk of infections, treatment delays, and poorer survival, while maintaining adequate nutritional status can improve treatment tolerance and long-term outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed and tested the "Hematognam" app, which provides caregivers with dietary guidance for children and adolesc

The Body as a Battlefield: Identity Development and Psychosomatic Expression in Eating Disorders Across Childhood and Adolescence.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) frequently emerge during critical stages of childhood and adolescence, when identity development and emotional regulation are still maturing. Disturbances in self-concept clarity and identity integration may transform the body into a symbolic battlefield for autonomy, belonging, and self-worth. This review synthesizes developmental, psychosocial, neurocognitive, and therapeutic perspectives on the role of identity disturbance in EDs. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted (2010-2025) using combinations of terms related to identity, self-concept

Thyroid Health and Selenium: The Critical Role of Adequate Intake from Fetal Development to Adolescence.

The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and supporting development through the production of the hormones T4 and T3. These hormones are essential during childhood for nervous system myelination, physical growth, puberty, skeletal and dental maturation, and overall metabolic balance. In early infancy, when the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis is still immature, thyroid dysfunction can result in a range of long-term complications. The metabolism and action of thyroid hormones depend not only on iodine but also on other vital micronutrients, particularly selenium (Se).

Risk Factors for the Development of Eating Disorders in Adolescents with Early-Onset Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) have an increased risk of developing psychiatric comorbidities, including eating disorders (EDs). We aimed to investigate the potential association between key disease characteristics, including psychological features, and the development of EDs in a clinical sample of adolescents with IBDs. We enrolled 52 adolescents with IBDs, 83% of whom were in clinical remission, and systematically collected additional information on disease duration, the total number of relapses, the use of steroids, and the number of hospital admissions. All participan

Measuring behavioural disturbances exhibited by children and adolescents in post-traumatic amnesia: Development of a scale.

Behavioural disturbances are often observed, but (to our knowledge) not systematically assessed, in children who are in post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Therefore, we aimed to develop a prototype scale that measures the full range of behavioural disturbances exhibited by school-aged children in PTA. Quantitative and qualitative feedback was collected via online surveys. First, experts (n = 7) evaluated the relevance and developmental appropriateness of 37 behavioural items, extracted from the scoping literature review. Second, clinicians (n = 20) evaluated t

Risk Factors for the Development of Arthrofibrosis After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Arthrofibrosis is a fibrotic joint disorder resulting in restricted joint motion and pain. Risk factors associated with the development of postoperative arthrofibrosis include female sex, type of graft, and quicker time to reconstruction. These patients have typically benefitted from manipulation under anesthesia or arthroscopic lysis of adhesions. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review the rate of arthrofibrosis in children and adolescents who previously underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cha

Psychosocial dysfunction and delayed sexual development among adolescents living with HIV in Lagos, Nigeria.

UNLABELLED: With increasing survival following the use of antiretroviral therapy, adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (ALHIV) could have complications such as delayed puberty and psychological complications. In Nigeria, there is limited data on the association between delayed sexual maturation and psychosocial dysfunction in ALHIV. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and the association between delayed sexual development (DSD) and psychosocial dysfunction (PSD) in ALHIV and compare it with uninfected adolescents. METHODOLOGY: This was a cross-sectional
