Arbitration between insula and temporoparietal junction subserves framing-induced boosts in generosity during social discounting.

Generosity toward others declines across the perceived social distance to them. Here, participants chose between selfish and costly generous options in two conditions: in the gain frame, a generous choice yielded a gain to the other; in the loss frame, it entailed preventing the loss of a previous endowment to the other. Social discounting was reduced in the loss compared to the gain frame, implying increased generosity toward strangers. Using neuroimaging tools, we found that while activity in the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) was associated wit

From waste product to blood, brains and narratives: developing a pluralist sociology of contributions to health research.

The aim of this paper is to examine the meaning of the concept of donation in health research. Drawing on a set of narrative interviews with people invited to donate biosamples for research and a range of other studies, we identify several conceptual themes that speak to the complexity of the current landscape of critical thinking about donation. These conceptual themes are: the language of 'donation'; a hierarchy of biosamples; alternative informational value; narratives as donation; coincidental donation, convenience and degree of invasiveness; and rights, consent and benefits of research pa

Giving Your Last Gift: A Study of the Knowledge, Attitude and Information of Greek Students Regarding Organ Donation.

BACKGROUND: Organ donation rates in Greece are the lowest in the European Union. Studying and improving young students' awareness may increase organ donation rates. This study aimed to investigate young students' knowledge, attitude and information regarding organ donation and whether they are modified by putative predictors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 62-item electronic questionnaire was sent to 1451 eligible students aged 18-30 years in 16 Greek public technical schools. Two composite scales (knowledge and attitude) were created. The multivariate statistical analysis included ordinal logistic

Humanitarian cardiac care in Arequipa, Peru: experiences of a multidisciplinary Canadian cardiovascular team.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardiovascular disease and its associated mortality continue to increase in developing countries despite unparalleled improvements in cardiovascular medicine over the last century. Cardiovascular care in developing nations is often constrained by limited resources, poor access, lack of specialty training and inadequate financial support. Medical volunteerism by experienced health care teams can provide mentorship, medical expertise and health policy advice to local teams and improve cardiovascular patient outcomes. METHODS: We report our experience from annual su

A sequential decision framework for increasing college students' support for organ donation and organ donor registration.

CONTEXT: Despite the fact that college students support social causes, this age group has underparticipated in organ donor registration. Little research attention has been given to understanding deeper, higher-order relationships between the antecedent attitudes toward and perceptions of organ donation and registration behavior. OBJECTIVE: To test a process model useful for understanding the sequential ordering of information necessary for moving college students along a hierarchical decision-making continuum from awareness to support to organ donor registration. DESIGN AND SETTING: The Univ

Synchrony and cooperation.

Armies, churches, organizations, and communities often engage in activities-for example, marching, singing, and dancing-that lead group members to act in synchrony with each other. Anthropologists and sociologists have speculated that rituals involving synchronous activity may produce positive emotions that weaken the psychological boundaries between the self and the group. This article explores whether synchronous activity may serve as a partial solution to the free-rider problem facing groups that need to motivate their members to contribute toward the collective good. Across three experimen

Internal factors related to self-management among type 2 diabetes patients during the COVID-19 pandemic as humanitarian emergencies: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence and mortality rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are increasing, making it a significant public health concern. Effective self-management of T2DM requires external factors, such as medical interventions and social support, and internal factors, including self-efficacy. However, during humanitarian emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare system disruptions limit external factors, making internal factors even more critical. Nonetheless, existing reviews have primarily focused on external factors and clinical outcomes during the pandemic, with no

Contribution of diversity of social participation on the mental health of humanitarian migrants during resettlement.

AIMS: By the end of 2022, an estimated 108.4 million individuals worldwide experienced forced displacement. Identifying modifiable factors associated with the mental illness of refugees is crucial for promoting successful integration and developing effective health policies. This study aims to examine the associations between the changes in the diversity of social participation and psychological distress among refugees throughout the resettlement process, specifically focusing on gender differences. METHODS: Utilizing data from three waves of a longitudinal, nationally representative cohort s

Key experiences of primary social groups in Unspecified Kidney Donation.

BACKGROUND: The role of family members in directed kidney donation is well documented in the literature from both a physiological and psychosocial perspective. The experiences of families, or primary social groups (PSGs), where one member considers donating a kidney via unspecified altruistic kidney donation route (UKD) is poorly understood. This is pertinent as lack of family support has been identified as a potential contributor to donation withdrawal. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the relevant psychosocial factors underpinning completed and uncompleted donations. DESIGN: A quali

Ten-year clinical experience of humanitarian cardiothoracic surgery in Rwanda: Building a platform for ultimate sustainability in a resource-limited setting.

OBJECTIVE: Despite its near complete eradication in resource-rich countries, rheumatic heart disease remains the most common acquired cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan Africa. With a ratio of physicians/population of 1 per 10,500, including only 4 cardiologists for a population of 11.4 million, Rwanda represents a resource-limited setting lacking the local capacity to detect and treat early cases of strep throat and perform lifesaving operations for advanced rheumatic heart disease. Humanitarian surgical outreach in this region can improve the delivery of cardiovascular care by providing s

Better the donor you know? A qualitative study of renal patients' views on 'altruistic' live-donor kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: In the UK there is a short-fall between individuals requiring a renal transplant and kidneys available for transplantation. Non-directed 'altruistic' living kidney donation has emerged as a strategy for bridging this gap between supply and demand, with the number increasing each year. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the views of potential recipients towards non-directed 'altruistic' live-donor kidney transplantation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 32 UK deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients were performed. Interviews explored willingness to consider directe

The coping experience of Taiwanese male donors in living donor liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Living donor liver transplantation is an option for effective treatment for patients with liver disease or a liver tumor. One disadvantage, however, is the risk of complications or death in a healthy donor. Thus, promoting the donor's safety and well-being is a major goal of transplantation care. In this regard, more research on physical and psychological complications and adjustment among donors is needed. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of living liver donors, focusing on their perceptions of living liver transplantation and corresponding coping

The response of academic medical centers to the 2010 Haiti earthquake: the Mount Sinai School of Medicine experience.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti was struck by a 7.0 earthquake which left the country in a state of devastation. In the aftermath, there was an enormous relief effort in which academic medical centers (AMC) played an important role. We offer a retrospective on the AMC response through the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) experience. Over the course of the year that followed the Earthquake, MSSM conducted five service trips in conjunction with two well-established groups which have provided service to the Haitian people for over 15 years. MSSM volunteer personnel included nurses, resident and a

Stress, mental health, and burnout in national humanitarian aid workers in Gulu, northern Uganda.

This study examined the mental health of national humanitarian aid workers in northern Uganda and contextual and organizational factors predicting well-being. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 376 national staff working for 21 humanitarian aid agencies. Over 50% of workers experienced 5 or more categories of traumatic events. Although, in the absence of clinical interviews, no clinical diagnoses were able to be confirmed, 68%, 53%, and 26% of respondents reported symptom levels associated with high risk for depression, anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), res

Altruistic, cognitive and attitudinal determinants of organ donation intention in Egypt: a social marketing perspective.

This study investigates the influence of various altruistic, cognitive, and attitudinal factors on the organ donation intention in Egypt. Using a large sample, a conceptual model has been developed. The findings from the structural equation model confirm the influence of the respondents' altruistic values, perceived benefits and risks, and knowledge on their attitudes towards organ donation. Respondents' attitudes towards organ donation, in turn, are also found to affect their organ donation intention. One of the other important findings suggests that on a declarative level, more and more indi

Rebellion against the polio vaccine in Nigeria: implications for humanitarian policy.

Polio eradication has been top on the agenda of various international humanitarian organizations since 1988. Caused by a virus that enters through the mouth, poliomyelitis attacks the nervous system, and can lead to irreversible paralysis or death. Children under five years of age are most at risk, and the oral polio vaccine, OPV, is administered as a drop often on a lump of sugar placed in the child's mouth. Given multiple times, the vaccine may protect a child for life!. In this essay, the Nigerian scenario serves as a case study of community involvement and trust in international humanitari
