The calcaneonavicular ligament lesion may be single or related to posterior tibial tendon involvement; the clinical and image-based diagnosis is difficult, without pathognomonic signs. The diagnosis is made during surgery and the calcaneonavicular ligament should always be explored whenever the posterior tibial tendon is involved.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary adenomas are common intracranial tumors, with a rising incidence in China. Excision is a mainstay therapy for this disease, and is often carried out via transfrontal, transsphenoidal or transpterional approaches. However, few studies have systematically addressed the regional anatomy involved in these microsurgical procedures. The present study attempted to establish some key anatomic measurements relevant to pituitary adenoma resection based on cadaver and computer tomography (CT) image studies.
METHODS: Head specimens from 30 randomly selected formalin-fixed adult cada…

Neuromodulators have risen to the forefront of aesthetic medicine. By reversibly relaxing target muscles, neuromodulators exhibit their effect by softening hyperfunctional lines. An understanding of their physiology, relevant facial anatomy, and current agents is imperative for a successful aesthetic practice.

The paper deals with anatomy of human cervical spine. It shows close relation between knowledge on the normal structure and methods of treatment of different kinds of spine injuries. It describes detailed anatomy and mechanical features of cervical vertebral column, including the structure of distinct vertebrae, their joints and arrangement of muscles. It reviews also historical methods of treatment of fractures in this region considering current methods.

This article reviews the microsurgical anatomy important to preserving the involved cranial nerves and adjacent neural and vascular structures during acoustic neuroma removal. These anatomic considerations are divided into sections dealing with the relationships at the lateral end of the tumor in the meatus and those on the medial end of the tumor at the brain stem. The anatomy of the region offers the opportunity for three approaches to the tumor in the meatus and cerebellopontine angle. One is directed through the middle cranial fossa and the roof of the meatus. Another is directed throught …

Pelvic floor muscles have two major functions: they provide support or act as a floor for the abdominal viscera including the rectum; and they provide a constrictor or continence mechanism to the urethral, anal, and vaginal orifices (in females). This article discusses the relevance of pelvic floor to the anal opening and closure function, and discusses new findings with regards to the role of these muscles in the vaginal and urethra closure mechanisms.

Understanding the anatomy of the rotator cuff and the surrounding structures that influence its function is essential to treating rotator cuff disease. During the past decade, advances in basic science and surgical technology have improved our knowledge of this anatomy. This review article presents the current concepts on rotator cuff anatomy and how they should be used in the surgical management of rotator cuff tears.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital and developmental osseous abnormalities and anomalies that affect the craniocervical junction complex can result in neural compression and vascular compromise and can manifest itself with abnormal cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. An understanding of the development of the craniocervical junction is essential to recognize the pathological abnormalities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Atlas assimilation, segmentation failures, os odontoideum, basilar invagination, and the various syndromes that affect the craniocervical junction have been analyzed. The natural history provides an

This review article describes anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and treatment of intervertebral disc. The intervertebral discs lie between the vertebral bodies, linking them together. The components of the disc are nucleus pulposus, annulus fibrosus and cartilagenous end-plates. The blood supply to the disc is only to the cartilagenous end-plates. The nerve supply is basically through the sinovertebral nerve. Biochemically, the important constituents of the disc are collagen fibers, elastin fibers and aggrecan. As the disc ages, degeneration occurs, osmotic pressure is lost in the nucleus, …

The biliary tree is a complex network of conduits that begins with the canals of Hering and progressively merges into a system of interlobular, septal, and major ducts which then coalesce to form the extrahepatic bile ducts, which finally deliver bile to the gallbladder and to the intestine. The biliary epithelium shows a morphological heterogeneity that is strictly associated with a variety of functions performed at the different levels of the biliary tree. In addition to funneling bile into the intestine, cholangiocytes (the epithelial cells lining the bile ducts) are actively involved in bi

Cervical spondylosis is the most common progressive disorder in the aging cervical spine. It results from the process of degeneration of the intervertebral discs and facet joints of the cervical spine. Biomechanically, the disc and the facets are the connecting structures between the vertebrae for the transmission of external forces. They also facilitate cervical spine mobility. Symptoms related to myelopathy and radiculopathy are caused by the formation of osteophytes, which compromise the diameter of the spinal canal. This compromise may also be partially developmental. The developmental pro

OBJECT: In this paper the authors correlate the surgical aspects of deep median and paramedian supratentorial lesions with the connective fiber systems of the white matter of the brain.
METHODS: The cerebral hemispheres of 10 cadaveric brains were dissected in a mediolateral direction by using the fiber dissection technique, corresponding to the surgical approach.
CONCLUSIONS: This study illuminates the delicacy of the intertwined and stratified fiber laminae of the white matter, and establishes that these structures can be preserved at surgical exploration in patients.

Coronary artery anomalies are a well recognized feature of many cardiac malformations and have been catalogued in a number of reviews. This overview concentrates on 1) the interplay between congenital heart defects and coronary morphogenesis, examining how some of the embryology fits with the experiments of nature encountered in clinical practice; and 2) the influence of coronary anatomy on patient management. This overview uses, as examples, pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, complete and congenitally corrected transpositions of the great arteries, and tetralogy of Fallot.

Practical guidelines in surgical anatomy for radical prostatectomy can be summarized as follows: 1. There is significant individual variation in the anatomy of the male pelvis. 2. The prostate is covered anteriorly by a prominent detrusor apron. 3. Prostates vary with respect to size and shape. 4. BPH compresses and flattens the peripheral zone. 5. In reality, the puboprostatic ligaments are pubovesical ligaments. 6. The dorsal vein complex of the penis is a neurovascular plexus of veins, arteries, and nerves situated primarily ventral to the prostate and urethra. 7. The urethra from the verum…

The complex anatomy of the pancreaticobiliary duct was studied to demonstrate basic data in Thai people. Fresh specimens of the pancreas, common bile duct, and duodenum were obtained en bloc from the autopsies of 103 patients who had died of causes not related to trauma or disease of these organs. The length of the pancreas, the location of the pancreatic ducts in relation to the surface of the pancreas, the length and types of the common channels, as well as the anatomy of the ampulla, were studied, using methylene blue infusion via the pancreatic duct cannulation and careful dissection. Nine…

This paper reviews the anatomical substrates responsible for the induction and maintenance of supraventricular tachycardia and discusses the ECG findings associated with these tachycardias. The normal anatomy of the supraventricular conducting system, particularly within the atria, is complex with conduction proceeding along preferential pathway, which are in turn determined in part by the anisotropic properties of the atrial myocardium. There appear to be at least dual inputs to the atrioventricular node, a posteriorly situated slow pathway and an anterior fast pathway. It is sometimes possib…
