Morphological parameters of the red cells were studied in 121 patients with typhoid-paratyphoid conditions. To obtain objective clinical data the authors studied the effect of LPS S. anatum on the intact red cells of healthy persons. The correlation of morphological disorders in the red cells of the patients and the controls revealed a significant role of intoxication in their origin. The research conducted revealed a relationship between the disorders in the erythrocyte membranes and the development of anemia in the patients.

A 19-year-old male with pernicious anemia and hypogammaglobulinemia (common variable immunodeficiency: CVID) is reported in comparison with classical pernicious anemia. This case was characterized by an earlier onset of anemia, the absence of autoantibodies to intrinsic factor or gastric parietal cells and involvement of the pyloric antrum as well as the gastric corpus. It is suggested that dysregulation of cellular immunity produces the autoimmune lesion in the gastric mucosa, including the pyloric antrum, in a patient with CVID, and that some of such cases develop pernicious anemia.

The investigation was carried out in 168 cases thus selected as chronic anaemia to be the only affection. In 113 patients with hemolytic anemia splenectomy was performed, without mortality and with minimal morbidity. Fifty-three patients with congenital spherocytosis and two with congenital elliptocytosis had postoperative increases in hematocrit to normal or near-normal levels. The clinical presentation of homozygous sickle cell disease is unusual in the neonatal period. Recently, we have encountered a newborn infant whose disease was apparent at birth and who died at 5 days of age. The findings at autopsy suggested a sickle cell crisis with multisystem involvement that was present prior to birth. Laboratory findings confirmed homozygous sickle cell disease without the presence of elevated levels of hemoglobin S. The cause of the unusually severe clinical course of the disease in our patient is the object of the discussion.
