Studies on immunity in anthrax. I. Variation in the serum T-agglutinin during anthrax infection in the rabbit.

An abrupt decrease in the titer of serum T-agglutinin frequently occurs during the acute phase of anthrax infection in the rabbit. In partially immunized animals which survive the infection the titer returns to normal during convalescence, but has not been observed to rise significantly above the normal level. The presence of a substance capable of inhibiting T-agglutination may be demonstrated in the sera of many of those animals in which a marked decrease in T-agglutinin has occurred. The polysaccharide and polypeptide antigens of B. anthracis do not possess this activity. Sera containing th…

Plant-based vaccine: mice immunized with chloroplast-derived anthrax protective antigen survive anthrax lethal toxin challenge.

The currently available human vaccine for anthrax, derived from the culture supernatant of Bacillus anthracis, contains the protective antigen (PA) and traces of the lethal and edema factors, which may contribute to adverse side effects associated with this vaccine. Therefore, an effective expression system that can provide a clean, safe, and efficacious vaccine is required. In an effort to produce anthrax vaccine in large quantities and free of extraneous bacterial contaminants, PA was expressed in transgenic tobacco chloroplasts by inserting the pagA gene into the chloroplast genome. Chlorop…

[One case of occupational pulmonary anthrax].

Pulmonary anthrax is an acute zoonotic infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis infecting the human body. Humans can be infected by coming into contact with diseased animals and their products or by consuming diseased animals. According to the different infection routes, it can be classified into cutaneous anthrax, pulmonary anthrax and intestinal anthrax, etc. Among them, cutaneous anthrax is the most common, while case reports of pulmonary anthrax are rare. This article analyzes the clinical data of a case of occupational pulmonary anthrax diagnosed by metagenomic next-generation sequ…

Gastrointestinal and cutaneous anthrax: Case series.

INTRODUCTION: Anthrax is a zoonosis affecting herbivorous animals. Its agent is Bacillus anthracis and it is gram positive, aerobic or facultative anaerobic, immobile and has a capsule in the polypeptide structure. The incidence is gradually decreasing in the world and in our country. The disease is especially seen in areas where stock breeding is common. In this case series, 3 cases, one of them was mortal, took place after anthrax infected cow was eaten in February 2018 in Trabzon was shared. CASE PRESENTATIONS: In the first case, as a result of the animal's meat was eaten, gastrointestinal…

Periorbital cellulitis due to cutaneous anthrax.

Virgil's plague of the ancient world, Bacillus anthracis, is rare in developed nations. Unfortunately rural communities across the globe continue to be exposed to this potentially lethal bacterium. Herein we report a case of periorbital cutaneous anthrax infection in a 3-year-old girl from the rural area surrounding Harare, Zimbabwe with a brief review of the literature.

Clinical microbiologists facing an anthrax alert.

Microbiological war and terrorist attacks are made to weaken populations by transmitting pathogenic and epidemic microorganisms. These bacteria or viruses are often difficult to diagnose. Anthrax alerts following September 2001 showed that most clinical microbiology laboratories were not adequately prepared, using obsolete diagnostic methods or being too slow to use accurate tools when facing a major threat. Following this period, most microbiology laboratories were prepared for bioterrorism alerts, in order to provide accurate and rapid results, although such events are rare and unexpected. I…

Human cutaneous anthrax, Georgia 2010-2012.

We assessed the occurrence of human cutaneous anthrax in Georgia during 2010--2012 by examining demographic and spatial characteristics of reported cases. Reporting increased substantially, as did clustering of cases near urban centers. Control efforts, including education about anthrax and livestock vaccination, can be directed at areas of high risk.

RAZOR EX anthrax air detection system.

The RAZOR EX Anthrax Air Detection System, developed by Idaho Technology, Inc. (ITI), is a qualitative method for the detection of Bacillus anthracis spores collected by air collection devices. This system comprises a DNA extraction kit, a freeze-dried PCR reagent pouch, and the RAZOR EX real-time PCR instrument. Each pouch contains three assays, which distinguish potentially virulent B. anthracis from avirulent B. anthracis and other Bacillus species. These assays target the pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids and chromosomal DNA. When all targets are detected, the instrument makes an "anthrax detected" c…

The anthrax attacks 10 years later.

Ten years ago, just weeks after the September 11 attacks, the United States experienced a deliberate act of bioterrorism. Through use of the postal service, anthrax spores were widely disseminated, including to homes, the Senate, and major newsrooms, resulting in morbidity and mortality and effectively disrupting our way of life and revealing our vulnerability. Even though such attacks had been the subject of much writing and had been planned for, detection of and the appropriate response to an attack with an agent from the so-called "Category 'A' List" had only been considered in theoretical …

Pathology of inhalational anthrax animal models.

Anthrax is a lethal disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. There are three principal forms of the disease in humans-cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and inhalational-depending on the route of exposure. Of these, inhalational anthrax is the most dangerous; it is rapidly fatal; and it has been used as a deadly biological warfare agent in the last decade. Suitable animal models of inhalational anthrax have been utilized to study pathogenesis of disease, investigate bacterial characteristics such as virulence, and test effectiveness of vaccines and therapeutics. To date, mice, guinea pigs…

Anthrax toxins--roadblocks for exocytic trafficking.

Anthrax toxins cause vascular dysfunction, in part by perturbing the endothelial cell barrier. Reporting in Nature, Guichard et al. shed new light on the mechanism by which this occurs and show that anthrax toxins interfere with exocytic delivery of cadherins to endothelial cell junctions by antagonizing the exocyst complex.
