AIM: Renal agenesis is a fairly common congenital anomaly with an unknown definite etiology. Unilateral renal agenesis is much more common than bilateral renal agenesis, but it usually does not carry any major health consequence, as long as the other kidney is healthy. In some cases, renal agenesis may by associated with other congenital anomalies. We report a neonatal female patient born with unilateral renal agenesis associated with malrotation of ipsilateral kidney, anal atresia and pulmonary artery failure.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One month old female child was referred to Nuclear Medicine

Congenital absence of hypoplasia of the uterus is a cause of primary amenorrhea in approximately 15% of cases. Ultrasound is often employed as an early imaging modality in the evaluation of patients with primary amenorrhea. Demonstration of total absence or marked hypoplasia of the uterus in the presence of normal ovaries during pelvic ultrasound examination, suggests the diagnosis of congenital uterine aplasia or hypoplasia. Sonography may obviate the need for laparoscopy and for other imaging modalities. A case report of uterovaginal hypoplasia in association with anal atresia and recto-vagi

Patients with congenital anorectal malformations (ARM) often have other associated congenital defects. The reported incidence and the types of associated malformations vary between different studies. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the prevalences at birth of associated malformations in patients of a geographically defined population with ARM which were collected between 1979 and 2003 in 334, 262 consecutive births. Of the 174 patients with ARM during the study period, 49.4% had associated malformations. Patients with associated malformations were further classified into groups

Pseudoverrucous papules and nodules (PPN) is a rare form of irritant contact dermatitis caused by chronic exposure to moisture and irritants. It commonly affects individuals with urostomy sites, perianal dermatitis, or peristomal irritation due to incontinence. Clinically, PPN presents as flat-topped, erythematous papules and verrucous nodules, which can resemble infectious or neoplastic conditions, making diagnosis challenging. This case report describes a 13-year-old boy with trisomy 21, imperforate anus, Hirschsprung's disease, and chronic kidney disease who developed persistent perianal an

Persistent cloaca is a rare presentation wherein the urethra, vagina, and rectum converge into a common channel with a single perineal opening. Fetal hydrometrocolpos can result if fluid accumulates behind an obstruction of this common channel. A 29-year-old woman (G4P1021) was referred at 36 2/7 weeks of gestation for evaluation of a fetal abdominal cystic mass. Detailed ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed two symmetric cystic masses, bilateral hydronephrosis, and oligohydramnios. Elective cesarean delivery was performed at 37 0/7 weeks; the baby weighed 4043 g with Apgar sc

The most common fetal abdominal wall defects are gastroschisis and omphalocele, both with a prevalence of about three in 10,000 births. Prenatal ultrasound has a high sensitivity for these abnormalities already at the time of the first-trimester nuchal scan. Major unrelated defects are associated with gastroschisis in about 10% of cases, whereas omphalocele is associated with chromosomal or genetic abnormalities in a much higher proportion of cases. Challenges in management of gastroschisis are related to the prevention of late intrauterine death, and the prediction and treatment of complex fo

We are presenting two cases of Sirenomelia (Mermaid Syndrome), which is an extreme example of the caudal regression syndrome. It invariably presents with lower limb fusion, sacral and pelvic bony anomalies, absent external genitalia, imperforate anus, and renal agenesis or dysgenesis. There are approximately 300 cases reported in the literature, 15% of which are associated with twinning, most often monozygotic. The syndrome of caudal regression is thought to be the result of injury to the caudal mesoderm early in gestation. One of our cases survived for 12 days after birth. This new born had a

Complete urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is usually a lethal anomaly that is characterized by urethral obstruction, imperforate anus, ambiguous genitalia, renal agenesis or dysplasia, and mullerian duct maldevelopment. This anomaly is thought to be caused by the cessation of urorectal septum migration toward the caudal cloacal membrane. Teratogenic factors or a genetic abnormality is postulated as the etiology. To date, only 4 patients with URSMS have survived the neonatal period; however, 2 of these infants died before the age of 1 year. We report the survival in a case with co

Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is a rare congenital malformation, which includes ambiguous genitalia, a phallus-like structure, imperforate anus, bladder, vaginal and rectal fistulas and Müllerian duct defects. We report two cases of prenatally diagnosed URSMS, both occurring in two sets of discordant twins. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first antenatal description of such an anomaly. The first fetus, one of a set of monochorionic, monoamniotic twins was detected sonographically at 21 weeks of gestation due to an enlarged phallus-like formation. The second fetus, on

BACKGROUND: Currarino syndrome (CS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by the association of three major clinical signs: anorectal malformation (ARM), sacro-coccygeal bone defects, and presacral mass. Different kinds of ARM can be present such as anteriorly placed anus, imperforate anus, anorectal stenosis, rectal duplication, and fistulae. The presacral mass can be a benign teratoma, a dermoid or neurenteric cyst, anterior meningocele or hamartoma. Females are more frequently affected and usually present with associated gynecologic and urinary tract problems. CS is considered an autoso…

Congenital pouch colon is an uncommon anomaly worldwide and is usually associated with anorectal malformations. Imperforate anus with a large air fluid level on the abdominal x ray suggests the diagnosis. Most cases are diagnosed in neonates and an early management limit complications. Few studies have documented the histopathological features of congenital pouch colon. We present two cases with varied associated anomalies (Case 1 with rectovesical fistula, Case 2 with Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser syndrome) and their histopathological features. Immunohistochemistry for calretinin showed pauc

Prune belly syndrome (PBS), megacystis-microcolon-intestinal hypoperistalsis (MMIH), and omphalocele-exstrophy of the bladder-imperforate anus-spine abnormalities complex (OEIS) are rare congenital malformations of the newborn that lead to incomplete formation of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract systems. To date, incomplete mesodermal development is identified as the cause for all these complex genetic syndromes even if the etiology is still unknown. We present an original case sharing characteristics common to PBS, MMIH, and OEIS complex, without a clear inclination toward any par

Prenatal diagnosis of concomitant duodenal atresia (DA) and esophageal atresia (EA) without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) (Gross type A) is very rare. We describe prenatal findings of one such case. Sonographic examination of a 26-week fetus showed a double cystic structure and an intrathoracic cyst. MRI and ultrasound at 26 weeks and 2 days' gestation showed shrinkage of the stomach and duodenum, massive ascites, and the presence of dilated pouch-like structure in the thoracic inlet level, consistent with an upper pouch sign. Polyhydramnios was detected at 30 weeks' gestation. Prenatal diag
