Anal canal cancer (ACC) has been reported to be an uncommon cancer in Japan, as in the USA, Europe, and Australia. This retrospective multi-institutional study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of ACC in Japan. First, the histological ACC type cases treated between 1991 and 2015 were collected. A detailed analysis of the characteristics of anal canal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cases was then conducted. The results of the histological types revealed that of the 1781 ACC cases, 435 cases (24.4%) including seven cases of adenosquamous cell carcinomas were SCC and 1260 cases (70.7%)

An 85-year-old woman who visited the hospital with sores on the perianal skin was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal(cT3N1aM0, cStage ⅢC). She received chemoradiotherapy(radiation total 54 Gy/30 Fr, mitomycin C/capecitabine). The tumor initially shrank, but regrowth of the primary lesion, extensive perianal skin infiltration, and the appearance of para aortic lymph node metastases was observed 6 months later. Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection was performed to mitigate strong local symptoms. The perineal defect was repaired with bilateral gluteus maximus flap(V- Y fl

PURPOSE: To conduct a systematic review evaluating the impact of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy (BT) on the clinical outcomes and toxicities of patients with anal cancer.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A search of Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was performed using search terms: "anal", "anal canal", "squamous", "adenocarcinoma", "cancer", "neoplasm", in combination with "brachytherapy", "high dose rate brachytherapy" or "HDR brachytherapy". Additional studies were identified after scanning references. Studies published in English with ≥10 patients were included.
RESULTS: Ten stu

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the prognostic value of leukocyte, lymphocyte, and neutrophil counts in anal cancer patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT).
METHODS: Multi-institutional retrospective data review included 148 non-metastatic anal cancer patients treated with definitive CCRT with 5-fluorouracil plus mitomycin C between the year 2001 and 2019. The median radiation dose to the primary tumor was 54 Gy with a median pelvic dose of 45 Gy. Median follow-up duration was 56 months, and complete blood cell counts were analyzed from baseline to 1 year after the completion of

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how the characteristics of CD4 counts predict non-AIDS-defining human papillomavirus-related anogenital warts (AGWs) and anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions/cancer (HSIL) in people living with HIV infection-1 (PLWH). We compared the associations between 3 CD4 counts measures and these disease outcomes in the study.
METHODS: Retrospective sociobehavioral and clinical data from electronic health records of 4803 PLWH from 2006 to 2018 were included. Three different measurements of CD4 counts-(a) nadir, (b) median, and (c) trajectory-were estimated. Six CD4

Numerous systemic diseases (vasculitis, connective tissue disease or sarcoidosis) can display an involvement of the perianal skin, the rectum and/or the anus. Such knowledge is important in order to treat these complications specifically when possible. Lesions of the anorectum arising from systemic diseases can sometimes cause perforations in the peritoneal cavity (if concerning the higher portion of the rectum) and/or fistulization to the anal margin. Differential diagnosis, mostly infectious or inflammatory (Crohn's disease) must be ruled out in every case. Other systemic diseases can displa

INTRODUCTION: Anal cytology (AC) can be used as a screening tool for detection of anal HPV associated lesions, mainly in men who have sex with men and in immunosuppressed patients. Our aim is to review our experience with AC in women.
MATERIAL & METHODS: We have retrospectively reviewed all AC diagnosed between 2010-2017 in a single tertiary hospital (n = 644) and selected those performed in women (n = 158).
RESULTS: 24.53% of AC were performed in women. 14.7% of all women were HIV positive and 56.7% referred anal intercourse. Squamous lesions were found in 27.2% of women, most of them ASCUS

Anal canal cancer is rather an uncommon disease but its incidence is increasing. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most frequent primary anal neoplasm and can encompass a variety of morphologies. HPV infection has a key role in precancerous lesions and cancer development by the production of E6 and E7 oncoproteins. Anal squamous precancerous lesions are now classified according to the same criteria and terminology as their cervical counterparts. The p16 expression by immunohistochemistry is a surrogate marker for human papilloma virus (HPV). Many other tumor types can arise in the anal cana

UNLABELLED: Background Anal cancer is increasing in incidence, has very high rates in specific populations and shares many similarities with cervical cancer. High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) are regarded as precursors to anal cancer. High resolution anoscopy (HRA), which is derived from colposcopy, is the only currently available tool that can identify areas of the anal canal for targeted biopsy and identification of HSIL.
METHODS: This study investigated the ability over a period of time of a single anoscopist to identify and adequately biopsy HSIL, correlating with contemp

BACKGROUND: Giant Condyloma Acuminatum (GCA) is a rare, slow growing, large cauliflower tumor of the penile foreskin and perianal region with benign histologic appearance but high propensity for local invasion and recurrences. GCA is associated with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) types 6 and 11 and it also has considerable risk of neoplastic transformation into fully invasive squamous cell carcinoma into about 5 years.
OBJECTIVE: Because of the rarity of perianal GCA, to date there is no general agreement on the best method for treatment. We wanted to know if surgical approach only was a good me

OBJECTIVE: Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS), first described in 1948 by Hajdu and independently in 1965 by Cheney, is an extremely rare disorder characterized by severe and excessive bone resorption leading to osteoporosis, with a wide range of other systemic complications from connective tissue and bone dysplasia. Currently there are approximately 50 distinct cases reported in the literature. There have been several reports associating polycystic kidneys with HCS and several other connective tissue disorders, suggesting a possibility of a hyperproliferative component to the syndrome. No articles e

A case of extensive squamous cell carcinoma arising in widespread perianal and inguinal hidradenitis suppurativa is used to illustrate the pathological features which influence management. The surgical pathology, with wide extension along subcutaneous sinuses, frequently leads to the view that it is incurable. A planned surgical approach, using both immediate frozen section and delayed paraffin histology to assess clearance margins allowed complete surgical excision in two stages. Colostomy is not a necessary part of management and healing by granulation is an acceptable alternative to extensi
