According to the unpublished documents, preserved in the Archives, the authors provide a possible explanation of the disease of the Anna Maria Lodovica de' Medici, the last descendent of the famous Florentine dynasty, suggesting that she could not have suffered from breast cancer, as it was claimed, but that she could have contracted syphilis. The opportunity to exhume her corpse in the frame of the Medici Project will supply evidence for this interpretation.

More than 60 zoonoses are linked to small mammals, including some of the most devastating pathogens in human history. Millions of museum-archived tissues are available to understand natural history of those pathogens. Our goal was to maximize the value of museum collections for pathogen-based research by using targeted sequence capture. We generated a probe panel that includes 39,916 80-bp RNA probes targeting 32 pathogen groups, including bacteria, helminths, fungi, and protozoans. OBJECTIVE: This historical vignette aims to elucidate the contributions of Professor Theodoros Aretaios (1829-1893) to orthopedic surgery in nineteenth-century Greece.
METHODS: Documentary research was conducted of Aretaios' personal patient archives, preserved in the National Library of Greece, to validate and evaluate his surgical practices.
RESULTS: The archival records revealed a total of 22 orthopedic cases. Aretaios primarily performed upper and lower limb amputations and dislocation reductions. Reconstructive bone and joint operations were less frequent in his practice.

Male breast cancer (MBC) incidence seems to parallel global increases in obesity. The stromal microenvironment contributes to carcinogenesis; yet, the role of adipocytes in this is understudied in MBC. We identified four cohorts of male breast tissues diagnosed when obesity was rare (archival cohort) and more common (contemporary cohort). We examined the microenvironment of archival and contemporary cohorts of MBC, diagnosed 1940-1970 and 1998-2006, respectively, with two cohorts of, archival and contemporary gynaecomastia, diagnosed 1940-1979 and 1996-2011, respectively, serving as controls.

A recent editorial in the Archives assigned the primary pathogenesis of infantile esotropia to the visual cortex. This analysis addresses the limitations of this timeworn view and advances the perspective that infantile esotropia is a cortico-mesencephalic-cerebellar disorder wherein binocular cortical maldevelopment permits atavistic subcortical visual pathways to remain operational. This integrated neuroanatomical model predicts that primary neurodevelopmental disorders involving the accessory optic system or its connections to the cerebellum can also give rise to infantile esotropia.

This study summarises the status of microplastic research in marine and freshwater specimens in natural museum collections around the world. Abundances, distributions, and types of microplastics in the archived collections are discussed. Museum collections can fill knowledge gaps on evolution of microplastic pollution before and during the Plasticene era.
