Reactive arthritis, an autoimmune disorder, occurs following gastrointestinal infection with invasive enteric pathogens, such as Salmonella enterica. INTRODUCTION: Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America. This study aimed to evaluate the natural history of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis-induced experimental arthritis of the knee joints in Wistar rats.
METHODS: Rats were randomly allocated to either an absolute control group, or 15-day, 45-day, or 90-day experimental (fungus-inoculated) groups.
RESULTS: Experimental groups developed classic signs of articular PCM. Titers of anti-gp43 were observed to increase during the interval from 15 to 45 days post-inoculation.

Concurrent joint infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) and demonstration of intraarticular monosodium urate (MSU) crystals has not previously been reported. We describe a patient with chronic tophaceous gout from whose joints both TB and MSU crystals were isolated. We propose a mechanism to explain this condition.

The incidence of various types of arthritis in children was estimated by a prospective 1-year study in the greater Helsinki area (population under 16 years of age: 148,362). We report a case of Streptobacillus moniliformis polyarthritis mimicking a rheumatoid arthritis, in a pet shop employee. In culture of fluid joint growth a curious Gram-negative bacillus was identified by polymerase chain reaction as Streptobacillus moniliformis. The outcome was good after surgical debridment and rifampin-clindamycin combination during 4 weeks.
