The aim of our serial work was to investigate the cardiovascular deconditioning effect of long-term simulated weightlessness and to elucidate its mechanisms. Our research goal was established in view of the following three reasons. Firstly, even after several decades of extensive research, there still exist significant gaps in our knowledge concerning microgravity induced cardiovascular effect. Secondly, to guarantee the health and safety of astronauts in the future prolonged missions, it is important to understand the cardiovascular adaptation to long-term weightlessness. Thirdly, the reporte…

The cardiovascular function is one of the main functions disturbed by microgravity. It is particularly affected by the astronaut's return to Earth, where one of the symptoms of the cardiovascular adaptation syndrome is orthostatic hypotension; the clinical consequence can be presyncopal state or a syncope. Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is intended to stimulate the venous system of the lower limbs. Studies performed in the U.S. have shown that LBNP constitutes an efficient countermeasure, but this approach is impractical because 4 to 6 h/d of application are required. Five volunteers took

Striking a balance between sensitivity and detection range while ensuring stability under extreme temperatures remains a formidable challenge in the design of flexible pressure sensors. To address this issue, we draw inspiration from the multi-gradient architectures of nature and propose a bottom-up self-assembly strategy. By leveraging a meticulously orchestrated multi-step approach that encompasses electrospinning, sequential freezing, and thermal imidization, we successfully fabricate a polyimide nanofiber/carbon nanotube dual-gradient aerogel with a dynamic stiffness transition from flexib

Microorganisms are present in all occupied indoor environments, including homes on Earth and within specialized systems like the International Space Station (ISS). Microbes when exposed to excess moisture, such as from an unexpected ventilation system failure, can undergo growth that is associated with material degradation and negative health effects. However, we do not yet understand how exposure of these microbes to excess moisture alters their function. A de novo metatranscriptomic study was performed using dust collected from the US air filtration system of the ISS and incubated in laborat

With the evolving circumstances on Earth and the burgeoning scientific interest in space, space exploration is experiencing significant growth. As human presence in space increases, the necessity for cultivating fresh food becomes a critical consideration for astronauts' health and psychological well-being. Consequently, 'space farming' emerges as a vital area of research for the future. However, the conditions in space differ markedly from those on Earth, exposing plants and humans to various abiotic stressors, one of which is microgravity. Microgravity refers to the diminished gravitational …

This review summarizes the current literature available on joint cartilage alterations in long-duration spaceflight. Evidence from spaceflight participants is currently limited to serum biomarker data in only a few astronauts. Findings from analogue model research, such as bed rest studies, as well as data from animal and cell research in real microgravity indicate that unloading and radiation exposure are associated with joint degeneration in terms of cartilage thinning and changes in cartilage composition. It is currently unknown how much the individual cartilage regions in the different joi…

Radiation exposure to astronauts could be a significant obstacle for long duration manned space exploration because of current uncertainties regarding the extent of biological effects. Furthermore, concepts for protective shielding also pose a technically challenging issue due to the nature of cosmic radiation and current mass and power constraints with modern exploration technology. The concern regarding exposure to cosmic radiation is biological damage that is associated with increased oxidative stress. It is therefore important and would be enabling to mitigate and/or prevent oxidative stre…

In spite of extensive training regimens during long-term space missions with existing training devices, astronauts suffer from muscle and bone loss. It has been suggested that reactive jumps inducing high forces in the muscles-consequently exposing the bones to high strains-help to counteract these degradations. In a previous study, a new sledge jump system (SJS) was found to allow fairly natural reactive jumps. The aim of the present study was to evaluate if training in the SJS would further reduce the differences between jumps in the SJS and normal jumps, particularly with respect to ground …

The effect of space flight and microgravity on the chemical senses is reviewed. Skylab-4 and Soyuz 30-31 studies revealed changes in taste thresholds while no effect was found in a Canadian investigation (41-G) and conflicting results were obtained on another Soyuz mission. Two simulated microgravity studies found no effect on taste or smell sensitivity; while 5 other studies found an effect. Microgravity induces physiological changes including an upward shift of body fluids toward the head, which may lead to an attenuation of the olfactory component in the flavor of foods. Chemosensory change

The scoring of chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes provides the most sensitive method known for biological dosimetry. By scoring dicentrics in the full genome of 500 cells, average whole-body doses of about 0.1 Gy of X or gamma rays may be detected and higher doses estimated. Acute doses above about 0.2 Gy can be estimated more accurately than similar chronic doses. For radiations of higher LET, for example those encountered in the space environment, the limits of detection in grays are lower. However, expressed in sieverts, the limits of detection are more nearly independent of radia

Astronauts will spend prolonged periods in an isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) spaceflight environment on long-duration space exploration missions. Continuous confinement in close quarters with a few crewmembers will require high levels of crew cohesion to promote mission success and crewmember wellbeing. In the past, the most common measure of crew cohesion were surveys, which tend to have high participant bias. More recently, researchers have analyzed video recordings that provide detailed proximity information but are time consuming to score and prone to interobserver bias. Here, we me…

OBJECTIVES: The amino acid homocysteine (HCY) has been implicated in the pathobiology of several conditions, including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS)-a collection of symptoms affecting near vision in astronauts. Blood-retinal barrier (BRB) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunctions are implicated in the pathobiology of SANS. Our objective was to assess how HCY affects BRB/BBB permeability and the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in the modulation of such effects.
METHODS: Human brain and retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs and HRMECs) were treated with 100 μM HC…

Exposure to ionizing radiation during manned deep space missions to Mars could lead to functional impairments of the central nervous system, which may compromise the success of the mission and affect the quality of life for returning astronauts. Along with radiation-induced changes in cognitive abilities and emotional status, the effects of increased motor activity were observed. The mechanisms behind these phenomena still remain unresolved. We conducted a study on grip strength, locomotor activity and intrasession habituation to novelty in 5-month-old rats after exposure to radiation (combine…

It is a consensus in the international manned space field that factors such as microgravity during the space flight can cause anxiety, depression and other important brain function abnormalities in astronauts. However, the neural mechanism at the molecular level is still unclear. Due to the limitations of research conditions, studies of biological changes in the primate brain have been comparatively few. We took advantage of -6° head-down bed rest (HDBR), one of the most implemented space analogues on the ground, to investigate the effects of simulated weightlessness on non-human primate brain…
