Production of antagonistic substance by Eikenella corrodens isolated from the oral cavity of human beings with and without periodontal disease.

AIMS: Antagonistic abilities may confer ecological advantages for micro-organisms in competitive ecosystems. However, reports regarding this phenomenon in Eikenella corrodens are not available. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nineteen E. corrodens strains, isolated from the oral cavity of human beings without periodontal disease (n = 5) and with aggressive (n = 9) and chronic (n = 5) periodontitis, as well as a reference strain (E. corrodens ATCC23834), were evaluated for antagonistic activity. The following indicators were used: Porphyromonas gingivalis FDC381, Prevotella intermedia ATCC25611, Actinomy

Screening for enterocins and detection of hemolysin and vancomycin resistance in enterococci of different origins.

The inhibitory activity of 122 out of 426 Enterococcus strains of geographically widespread origin and from different sources (food and feed, animal isolates, clinical and nonclinical human isolates) was tested against a wide range of indicator bacteria. Seventy-two strains, mainly belonging to the species Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis were bacteriocinogenic. A remarkable variation of inhibitory spectra occurred among the strains tested, including inhibition of, for instance, only closely related enterococci, other lactic acid bacteria (LAB), food spoilage and pathogenic bacte

Micro-organisms in the bile. A preventable cause of sepsis after biliary surgery.

The bile is infected in 31% of patients undergoing an operation for biliary disease and these patients have a significantly greater risk of developing wound sepsis and septicaemia than patients with sterile bile. Prophylactic antibiotics which achieve satisfactory serum rather than high bile levels have been shown to reduce the morbidity of biliary operation. However, only patients with infected bile benefit from prophylactic chemotherapy. Patients with infected bile can be satisfactorily identified by preoperative duodenal aspiration, operative Gram staining of bile, or clinical presentation.

Plantaricin BM-1 enhances anti-colorectal cancer effects by inhibiting CD8+ cytotoxic T cell apoptosis via the ERK/AP1/Bim signaling pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Plantaricin BM-1, a class IIa bacteriocin from Lactobacillus plantarum, exhibits anticancer potential, but its in vivo efficacy against CRC is unclear. METHODS: Using an AOM/DSS-induced CRC mouse model, we administered Plantaricin BM-1 orally and evaluated therapeutic effects via phenotypic, pathological, and inflammatory assessments. scRNA-seq elucidated molecular mechanisms, validated by RT-qPCR, IHC, flow cytometry, and Western blot. DISCUSSION: ResultsResults demonstrated that Plantaricin BM-1 sign

Characterization of MreCD in Streptococcus mutans.

BACKGROUND: Activities that control cell shape and division are critical for the survival of bacteria. However, little is known about the circuitry controlling these processes in the dental caries pathogen Streptococcus mutans. METHODOLOGY: We designed experiments to characterize two genes, mreC and mreD, in S. mutans. Assays included cell morphology imaging, protein interaction analysis, transcriptomics, proteomics, and biofilm studies to generate a comprehensive understanding of the role of MreCD in S. mutans. RESULTS: Consistent with mreCD participating in cell elongation, cells lacking t

Complete genome sequence of an extensively drug resistant (XDR) M. morganii SMM01 isolated from a patient with urinary and fecal incontinence.

OBJECTIVE: M. morganii is a gram-negative, non-lactose fermenting and an opportunistic pathogen frequently associated with nosocomial infections. Although first isolated in 1906 from a pediatric fecal sample, not many M. morganii isolates have been sequenced. The objective of this work is to determine the complete genome sequence of an XDR M. morganii strain (SMM01) isolated from the urine of a patient with urinary and fecal incontinence and to characterize its antimicrobial resistance profile. DATA DESCRIPTION: Here, we report the complete genome sequence of M. morganii SMM01 generated from

Expression and characterization of the peptidase domain of Streptococcus pneumoniae ComA, a bifunctional ATP-binding cassette transporter involved in quorum sensing pathway.

ComA, a member of the bacteriocin ATP-binding cassette transporters, is postulated to be responsible for both the processing of the propeptide ComC and secretion of the mature competence-stimulating peptide, which regulates the competence and subsequent genetic transformation in Streptococcus pneumoniae. A recombinant N-terminal peptidase domain of ComA, designated PEP, was expressed as a soluble protein in Escherichia coli, purified to homogeneity, and characterized. Gel-filtration analysis revealed that PEP functions as a monomer. The purified PEP exhibited an efficient proteolytic activity

Genomic Relationship Between Brochothrix campestris and Its Phages: A Cross-Replicon and Interspecies Perspective.

Background/Objectives: The bacterium Brochothrix campestris is closely related to Brochothrix thermosphacta, a known food spoilage agent, and Listeria monocytogenes, the causative agent of listeriosis. B. campestris garnered attention several years ago because it produces brochocin-C, a bacteriocin capable of inhibiting the growth of certain pathogens. It has been recently suggested that phages play a significant role in the evolution of B. thermosphacta, similar to the role they play for L. monocytogenes. However, understanding the role of phages in the evolution of B. campestris has been cha

Directional and Strain-Specific Interaction Between Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus aureus.

The interaction between Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus aureus strains FRI-1169 and MN8, two original isolated strains from menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS) cases, is a key focus for developing non-antibiotic strategies to control S. aureus-related infections. While the antagonistic effects of Lactobacilli species on S. aureus through mechanisms like organic acid and bacteriocin production are known, the molecular dynamics of these interactions remain underexplored. This study employs a proteomic approach to analyze the interactions between L. plantarum WCFS1 and S. aureus stra

Spectroscopic aspects on the interaction of nisin with serum albumin: thermodynamic and kinetic studies.

INTRODUCTION: Nisin is a bacteriocin produced by Streptococcus and Lactococcus species and has antimicrobial activity against other bacteria. Nisin omits the need to use chemical preservatives in food due to its biological preserving properties. METHODS: In the present in vitro study, we investigated nisin interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA) using fluorescence spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis to obtain information about the mechanisms of BSA complex formation with nisin. RESULTS: The BSA fluorescence intensity values gradually diminished with rising nisin con

Resistance-plasmid- and protease-independent murine virulence of a multiple-drug-resistant strain of Serratia marcescens.

The multiple-drug-resistant Serratia marcescens isolate SH 186 (serotype 06/014:H12, bacteriocin type 18) carried a 44 megadalton, nonconjugative resistance (R-) plasmid as demonstrated with 'curing' experiments and the DNA agarose gel electrophoresis technique. 'Cured' variants, which had lost part of or the entire R-plasmid, proved as virulent for outbred NMRI mice (intraperitoneal route) as the wild-type parent strain. Therefore, the virulence of this S. marcescens strain was plasmid-independent. Protease-deficient variants of this strain as well as protease-negative variants of two additio

Food borne infection with Clostridium perfringens type A.

Clostridium perfringens type A is one of the four most important bacterial agents causing food poisoning. Differential biochemical characterization appears to be important because of certain confounding species. Both the heat sensitive and resistant spore forming strains cause food poisoning. Ubiquitous nature, ability to contaminate carcass intravitally, thermal resistance of spores, relatively short generation time at high incubation temperature, survival in chilled and frozen meat and ability to overcome stomach acid barrier makes Cl. perfringens type A a common agent of food borne infectio
