The study of 1023 strains, formerly identified as Shigella, has revealed that 67 of these strains belong to Escherichia, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Providencia, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium. Such errors are due to the insufficient use of biochemical tests in the process of identification. To improve Shigella identification, after the evaluation of changes in Olkenitsky's medium of trisaccharide agar the tests for urease activity, citrate and acetate assimilation, lysine decarboxylase, mobility at 22 degrees C, sensitivity to Shigella bacteriophage, oxidase are recommended.

Scabies is considered to be the commonest disease among the patient attending most Dermatology outpatientdepartments in ourcountry. Pyoderma sometimes appears as the main clinical presentation in scabies. Of the total cases of tuberculosis reported in Canada between 1970-1974, approximately one-sixth (3671 cases) involved primarily non-respiratory organs. Common diagnostic entities were genitourinary tuberculosis (1516 cases), lymphadenitis (1083 cases), bone and joint tuberculosis (555 cases), gastrointestinal tuberculosis (155 cases) and meningitis (138 cases). The Ploskirev medium with addition of tetracycline in an amount of 10 mu/ml was used for increasing the isolation frequency of dysenteric bacteria. 102 faeces samples from children with acute dysentery were tested. It was shown that the Ploskirev medium with tetracycline was elective and its use is advisable for isolation of antibiotic resistant Shigella.

In a series of 162 cases of surgically resected hyperplastic prostates the incidence of inflammation is 98.1%. Biopsy specimens, mostly lymph nodes, removed under aseptic conditions, were emulsified and the homogenate was inoculated in various media, which were incubated aerobically or anaerobically. A bacteriological study was carried out on bile taken, during the course of surgery, from 235 patients suffering from a wide variety of diseases, both benign and malignant, concerning the bile ways. The investigation, initially directed to the aerobic bile flora, was afterwards extended to include germs growing in strict anaerobiosis. The distribution of agglutinating antibodies to Yersinia enterocolitica type 2 in sera from goats in an infected herd, and in 190 other animals from different parts of the country was studied. The faecal excretion of Yersinia enterocolitica from the same animals was also examined. Experimental inoculations of two goats were carried out. The serological results indicate that subclinical cases had occurred in the infected herd during the enzooty and during the following months.
