Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in primary sleep disorders.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a widely used non-invasive neuromodulatory technique. When applied in sleep medicine, the main hypothesis explaining its effects concerns the modulation of synaptic plasticity and the strength of connections between the brain areas involved in sleep disorders. Recently, there has been a significant increase in the publication of rTMS studies in primary sleep disorders. A multi-database-based search converges on the evidence that rTMS is safe and feasible in chronic insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), restless legs syndrome (

Imaging the Functional Neuroanatomy of Parkinson's Disease: Clinical Applications and Future Directions.

The neurobiology of Parkinson's disease and its progression has been investigated during the last few decades. Braak et al. proposed neuropathological stages of this disease based on the recognizable topographical extent of Lewy body lesions. This pathological process involves specific brain areas with an ascending course from the brain stem to the cortex. Post-mortem studies are of importance to better understand not only the progression of motor symptoms, but also the involvement of other domains, including cognition and behavior. The correlation between the neuropathological expansion of th

Extracorporeal perfusion of isolated organs of large animals - Bridging the gap between in vitro and in vivo studies.

Since the early 20th century, extracorporeal perfusion of large animal organs has been used to investigate a broad variety of research questions, thereby overcoming common drawbacks of in vitro studies without suffering from ethical concerns associated with live animal research. The technique is in accordance with the 3R principles and represents an excellent opportunity to investigate the physiology of organs in detail under standardized conditions. It is also suitable for the translation of basic pre-clinical research into a more relevant arena prior to or avoiding live animal research altog

Anisotropic crystal deformation measurements determined using powder X-ray diffraction and a new in situ compression stage.

This report addresses the development of experimental and computational estimations of the anisotropic elastic moduli (EM) of single crystals to aid in the a priori (i.e., starting with the crystal structure) prediction of the trend as a function of the direction of applied stress. Experimentally EM values in the normal direction to the X-, Y- and Z-planes of block shaped aspirin and acetaminophen crystals were determined using data generated by the newly designed compression stage housed in our powder X-ray diffractometer. Computational estimations of EM were made using the applicable modules

Heterogeneity of ultrasonic wave properties in ex vivo cortical bone of racehorse.

Despite the prevalence of lower limb disease in racehorses, outdoor bone evaluation equipment is lacking. Consequently, a secure and cost-effective field screening system for bones is required to identify early-stage leg illness. Elastic stiffness cannot be measured using x-ray techniques and is closely associated with bone quality, which is recognized as a significant determinant of fracture risk. Quantitative ultrasound has garnered attention as a viable option, offering insights into elastic stiffness. Understanding the characteristic behaviors of ultrasonic wave properties (velocity, atten

Self-assembly patterns of non-metalloid silver thiolates: structural, HR-ESI-MS and stability studies.

Screening of AgNO3/AgStBu solutions in DMF, DMSO and NMP resulted in the isolation of three novel nanosized silver/thiolate complexes with a torus-like {Ag20(StBu)10} core. The structures of [NO3@Ag20(StBu)10(NO3)9(DMF)6] (1) and [NO3@Ag20(tBuS)10(NO3)8(NMP)8][NO3@Ag19(tBuS)10(NO3)8(NMP)6]2(NO3) (2) were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The self-assembly process leading to 1 can be switched to a different outcome using Br-, resulting in [Br@Ag16(StBu)8(NO3)5(DMF)3](NO3)2 (3), which is the one of the few genuine host-guest complexes in the silver/thiolate systems. Solutions

Effects of blastomere biopsy on post-natal growth and behavior in mice.

STUDY QUESTION: Does blastomere biopsy (BB) of preimplantation embryos induce long-term effects on their growth and post-natal behavior? SUMMARY ANSWER: BB induces long-term effects on body weight and behavior in male mice. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: BB is an essential technique for performing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), a screening test that can detect genetic abnormalities of embryos before their transfer in utero. There is limited understanding of the post-natal consequences and safety of BB. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Offspring who had a BB performed as embryos, as well as c

Femoral Fixation Techniques for Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis During Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Systematic Review and Proposed Collision-Aware Planning Framework.

Background and Objectives: Lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) is increasingly used to augment anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in selected high-risk patients. Femoral fixation strategies vary widely and may influence construct behavior, tunnel interaction, technical safety, and ultimately knee stability and functional outcomes. The objectives of this review were to map and compare femoral fixation techniques for LET performed with ACLR, to summarize the cadaveric and clinical evidence relevant to fixation choice, to synthesize imaging and experimental data on femoral tunne

Molecular-Weight Growth in Ozone-Initiated Low-Temperature Oxidation of Methyl Crotonate.

We report experiments of ozone-initiated low-temperature oxidation of methyl crotonate (MC, CH3-CH═CH-C(O)OCH3) from 420 to 660 K in a near-atmospheric-pressure jet-stirred reactor using photoionization molecular-beam mass spectrometry as a sampling technique. In this temperature regime, no typical low-temperature combustion (LTC) reactions have been observed for MC when oxygen (O2) is used as the oxidizer. Upon ozone addition, significant oxidation of methyl crotonate is found. On the basis of experimentally observed energy-dependent mass peaks in combination with temperature-dependent mole f

Acute Ultra Low Dose THC Attenuates Anxiety-Like Behavior in a Mouse Model for Major-Depressive Disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder, and is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Current treatments for MDD entail many side effects, and include a lag until the onset of therapeutic effects. The current hypotheses as for the etiology of MDD revolve around the monoamine hypothesis and the plasticity and neurodegeneration hypothesis. According to the latter, employing a neuroprotective treatment may help ameliorate depressive symptoms. Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive component of the cannabis sativa plant. THC interacts with the endo

Spontaneous neural activity of the anterodorsal lobe and entopeduncular nucleus in adult zebrafish: a putative homologue of hippocampal sharp waves.

Spontaneous neural activity is instrumental in the formation and maintenance of neural circuits that govern behavior. In mammals, spontaneous activity is observed in the spinal cord, brainstem, diencephalon, and neocortex, and has been most extensively studied in the hippocampus. Using whole-brain in vitro recordings we establish the presence of spontaneous activity in two regions of the zebrafish telenchephalon: the entopeduncular nucleus (EN) and the anterodorsal lobe (ADL). The ADL is part of the lateral telencephalic pallium, an area hypothesized to be functionally equivalent to the mammal

Analysis of corneal aldehyde dehydrogenase patterns in pathologic corneas.

In this study we investigated the properties of corneal aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) in keratoconus corneas using various electrophoretic techniques combined with immunochemical and zymographic identification. Normal corneas and other pathologic corneal buttons obtained during keratoplastic surgery were used as a control. A significant (p < 0.001) lower enzymatic activity was found in keratoconus epithelial extracts (3.1 +/- 2.1 IU/mg protein) compared with normal controls (5.5 +/- 2.6 IU/mg protein), whereas no significant differences were observed in the stromal and endothelial extracts. Complementarity of mDSC, DMA, and DRS Techniques in the Study of Tg and Sub-Tg Transitions in Amorphous Solids: PVPVA, Indomethacin, and Amorphous Solid Dispersions Based on Indomethacin/PVPVA.

Recently, glasses, a subset of amorphous solids, have gained attention in various fields, such as polymer chemistry, optical fibers, and pharmaceuticals. One of their characteristic features, the glass transition temperature (Tg) which is absent in 100% crystalline materials, influences several material properties, such as free volume, enthalpy, viscosity, thermodynamic transitions, molecular motions, physical stability, mechanical properties, etc. In addition to Tg, there may be several other temperature-dependent transitions known as sub-Tg transitions (or β-, γ-, and δ-relaxations) which ar

Consuming illicit opioids during a drug overdose epidemic: Illicit fentanyls, drug discernment, and the radical transformation of the illicit opioid market.

BACKGROUND: North America continues to face an opioid overdose epidemic, driven by persistent increases in illicit fentanyls and fluctuations in potency leading to uncertainty for consumers. This qualitative study was conducted to better understand how people who inject drugs (PWID) came to recognize fentanyl as a growing adulterant of heroin and the subsequent sensory discernment strategies they employed to continue injecting. Our main objective was to investigate how observations and knowledge are combined as homegrown techniques for detecting fentanyl and minimizing risk. Secondary objectiv

Sclerostin levels in uremic patients: a link between bone and vascular disease.

Sclerostin is a marker of low-turnover bone disease in end stage renal disease patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum sclerostin in uremic patients, analyzing its behavior during a single hemodialysis session. Twenty-one adult patients on intermittent hemodialysis treatment were enrolled. Acetate Free Bio-filtration (AFB) was the technique employed. Uremic patients were characterized by higher levels of serum sclerostin when compared with values observed in healthy subjects. Sclerostin assessed in pre-dialysis samples was 1.4 ± 1.02 ng/mL, whereas, in post dialysis samples, a re

Neural correlates of cognitive improvements following cognitive remediation in schizophrenia: a systematic review of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments are a core feature in schizophrenia and are linked to poor social functioning. Numerous studies have shown that cognitive remediation can enhance cognitive and functional abilities in patients with this pathology. The underlying mechanism of these behavioral improvements seems to be related to structural and functional changes in the brain. However, studies on neural correlates of such enhancement remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: We explored the neural correlates of cognitive enhancement following cognitive remediation interventions in schizophrenia and the differe

Deep learning-based characterization of neutrophil activation phenotypes in ex vivo human Candida blood infections.

Early identification of human pathogens is crucial for the effective treatment of bloodstream infections to prevent sepsis. Since pathogens that are present in small numbers are usually difficult to detect directly, we hypothesize that the behavior of the immune cells that are present in large numbers may provide indirect evidence about the causative pathogen of the infection. We previously applied time-lapse microscopy to observe that neutrophils isolated from human whole-blood samples, which had been infected with the human-pathogenic fungus Candida albicans or C. glabrata, indeed exhibited
