Understanding the needs for support and coping strategies in grief following the loss of a significant other: insights from a cross-sectional survey in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Grief has previously been described in pathological terms, characterized by several stages. In the past three decades, new perspectives on grief as a reaction to the loss of a significant other have emerged. It shows that grief is an individual process based on circumstances surrounding the death and the bereaved person's life situation, rather than being predetermined. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to show how grief is perceived by people who have lost a significant other, and it focuses on bereavement support, how the death affects the bereaved person's living conditions, …

Parenting the Forgotten Mourners. Caring for Siblings Amidst a Family Life Marked by Child Loss to Cancer.

The aim of the paper was to examine the experiences of bereaved parents when parenting a bereaved sibling following the loss of a child to cancer in Switzerland. For this secondary analysis, we interviewed 19 bereaved parents who together had 25 surviving siblings. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed that many parents recognized that their grief could have a negative impact on their surviving children. They expressed uncertainty and sometimes regret about their changed approach to parenting. They sought support from healthcare professionals and schools, but encountered barriers, particularly

Perceived social support and symptoms of prolonged grief after a drug-related death.

Social network support can be important when adjusting to life after the death of a close family member or friend. However, research has yielded inconclusive results regarding the relationship between social support and complicated grief reactions. Persons bereaved after a drug-related death (DRD) are a group of people who are at high risk of developing bereavement complications. Based on a Norwegian study on DRD bereaved close family members and friends (n = 250), this study examines the association between perceived social support, societal stigma, own social withdrawal, and prolonged grief …

Regret resolution, aging, and adapting to loss.

Both theory and empirical evidence suggest that people who have unresolved regrets experience lower levels of well-being than do those who resolve their regrets. In this study, the authors examined the role of regret resolution during bereavement by assessing whether (a) regret resolution would aid in adapting to the death of a loved one and (b) older adults would be more successful at resolving their bereavement-related regrets than would younger adults. Mixed models were run with longitudinal data from an age-heterogeneous sample of 147 men and women who were eventually bereaved after provid…

Psychosocial outcomes of parents in pediatric haploidentical transplant: parental hematopoietic cell donation as a double-edged sword.

Parents are increasingly used as donors for their child's haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplant, creating a dual role for parents that may increase the stress of caring for their ill child. Empiric research on the psychological adjustment of parental donors is lacking. We conducted a retrospective survey of parents (n = 136) whose child underwent transplant with a parental donor or a matched-unrelated donor, including both donor and nondonors, and both parents of survivors and bereaved. All parents completed standardized measures of quality of life, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic s

Parents' experiences of care offered after stillbirth: An international online survey of high and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth, the death of a baby before birth, is associated with significant psychological and social consequences that can be mitigated by respectful and supportive bereavement care. The absence of high-level evidence to support the broad scope of perinatal bereavement practices means that offering a range of options identified as valued by parents has become an important indicator of care quality. This study aimed to describe bereavement care practices offered to parents across different high-income and middle-income countries. METHODS: An online survey of parents of stillborn b…

The loss of a fellow service member: Complicated grief in post-9/11 service members and veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Bereavement is a potent and highly prevalent stressor among service members and veterans. However, the psychological consequences of bereavement, including complicated grief (CG), have been minimally examined. Loss was assessed in 204 post-9/11, when service members and veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) took part in a multicenter treatment study. Those who reported the loss of an important person completed the inventory of complicated grief (ICG; n = 160). Over three quarters (79.41%) of the sample reported an important lifetime loss, with close to half (47.06%)…

The relationship between external events and affect states in older people.

Long-term and moderately short-term effects of bereavement and marriage on psychological well-being (PWB) among older people were investigated. The aspect of PWB that was examined was the prevalence of six affects, rated in terms of their frequency during the past year. Affect frequency of four groups was tested: Recently widowed, recently married, and widowed and married elders unselected for length of time in those marital statuses. As predicted, both length of time in the marital status and congruence between the positive event (marriage) and positive affect and between congruence of the ne…

Predictors of mortality among a national sample of elderly widowed people: analysis of 28-year mortality rates.

OBJECTIVE: to identify predictors of mortality among a national sample of elderly widowed people 28 years post-baseline interview. DESIGN AND SETTING: face to face home interview survey across England. MEASURES: physical, psychological, social, and socio-economic status and circumstances. RESULTS: excess risk of mortality, which had been noted up to six months post bereavement among males aged 75+, had disappeared. In contrast to findings up to 13 years post-bereavement, neither psycho-social factors, social circumstances nor social class independently predicted differentials in mortality w…

Sharing in the community of having lost a child.

What does it mean to share an experience of losing a child? Not solely to put such an experience into words, but also to speak of it to others who may share their own experiences of loss? What is shared in such moments of sharing? Here, we present a phenomenological study of sharing among parents who have lost a child. We draw on observations and anecdotes from a parental bereavement group. Our thoughts are organised around thematic statements that reflect the value of these sharing spaces for bereaved parents: sharing as an experience of sharing something, sharing as an experience of a commun…

"He worries that I might die too": A thematic co-occurrence analysis of interdependence after partner/parental death.

The death of a partner and parent creates profound upheaval for surviving families, reshaping everyday functioning and requiring renegotiation of roles and routines. This study examines how interdependence changes in surviving parent-emerging adult child dyads (ages 15-25) following partner/parental death. Open-ended responses from 45 parent-child dyads were analyzed using thematic co-occurrence analysis, guided by relational turbulence theory. Parents and children described interference and facilitation from one another, as well as partner influence explicitly linked to bereavement-driven rol…

Testing the latent structure of ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder symptoms in the U.K. adult population: An exploratory structural equation modeling approach.

The latent structure of ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder (PGD), as measured using the International Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale (IPGDS), was assessed in a large general population sample of bereaved adults from the United Kingdom. Data were derived from Wave 5 of the COVID-19 Psychological Research Consortium Study (C19PRC-UK). Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) was used to assess the latent structure of the IPGDS. Identified factors were explored in relation to known correlates (i.e., gender, age of the bereaved, income, bereavement timeframe, age of the deceased) and functiona…

Grief: A Brief History of Research on How Body, Mind, and Brain Adapt.

OBJECTIVE: Using an integrative view of psychology, neuroscience, immunology, and psychophysiology, the present review of literature curates the findings that have had an impact on the field of bereavement research and shaped its development. METHODS: Beginning with pivotal systematic descriptions of medical and psychological responses to the death of a loved one by Lindemann in the mid-1940s, this selective review integrates findings in bereavement research from studies that investigate medical outcomes after loss, their psychological predictors, and biopsychosocial mechanisms. RESULTS: Mor…

The forgotten grief: a review of the psychology of stillbirth.

Recognizing that grieving occurs in parents of stillborn infants, attention is focused on aspects of grief, both similar to others bereavements and particular to perinatal loss. Processes in perinatal bereavement, pathological variants of perinatal grief, and the conditions and interventions affecting the outcome of grief at stillbirth are considered. Suggestions for further research are offered.

Increasing supportive responses to a peer's distress following a loss: The role of attachment orientations, security priming, and previous experience with loss.

Many bereaved college students find their peers' support to be unhelpful. This study explored whether previously unexamined individual-difference factors and experimental priming of felt security (i.e., confidence in support availability) can influence supportive responses to a bereaved peer among university students (N = 202; 76% female; 44% White, 24% Asian, 15% Black, 10% Multiracial, 8% other identities). Attachment insecurity (avoidance and anxiety) predicted less supportive responses, whereas previous personal experience with loss predicted more supportive responses. Students who were ra
