Molecular cloning of tissue-specific transcripts of a transketolase-related gene: implications for the evolution of new vertebrate genes.

As part of a systematic search for differentially expressed genes, we have isolated a novel transketolase-related gene (TKR) (HGMW-approved … se gene by gene duplication. Thiamine defiency is closely involved with two neurological disorders, Beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndromes, and in both of these conditions TK with altered activity are found. We discuss the possible involvement of TKR in explaining the observed variant transketolase forms.

THE KINETICS OF STARVATION.

1. The relative weight loss of pigeons on starving rations may be represented by a simple modification of the law of autocatalysis. 2. An eq … ng the foregoing equations were valid. 6. Attention is called to the fact that the time of onset of beriberi in pigeons is coincident with the half period of starvation.

Casimir Funk: his discovery of the vitamins and their deficiency disorders.

The history of the discovery of vitamins is the history of their deficiency disorders. Their discoverer was Casimir Funk, who is considered the 'father of vitamin therapy'. In his experimental research, Funk studied the interrelationships in the human body of those elements that Eijkman had demonstrated in animals, particularly in birds. In his experimental research, Funk identified the dietetic factors whose lack caused the 'deficiency disorders', as he called human beri-beri, scurvy, rickets and pellagra. In 1911, he designated these factors 'vitamins' ('vita' = life, and 'amine' = a nitroge

Non-specific hyperamylasemia in shosin beri-beri.

Several reports demonstrate non-specific hyperamylasemia in cardiac surgery or diabetic ketoacidosis. We report here for the first time non-specific hyperamylasemia in a cardiovascular beri-beri case who showed shock with severe metabolic acidosis. Her echocardiography revealed hyperkinetic wall motion of the small left ventricle. Despite intravascular volume expansion in parallel with dopamine administration, her blood pressure did not recover. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) did not reveal pancreatic swelling or any other signs of acute pancreatitis. Her history suggested a possibility of

Excessive beer consumption and beri-beri.

Alcohol-induced 'wet' or cardiac beri-beri is reported in two middle-aged males who consumed excessive amounts of beer. The high carbohydrate and satiety value of beer together with its low thiamine content places the alcoholic beer drinker at particular risk of thiamine deficiency.

Nutritional Myeloneuropathy Secondary to Thiamine Deficiency: A Case Report.

Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency can occur secondary to malnutrition, which is associated with multiple etiologies, from imbalanced dietary habits to significant gastrointestinal nutritional losses such as recurrent vomiting or diarrhea. Thiamine deficiency manifests as dry or wet beriberi, Wernicke encephalopathy, or Korsakoff syndrome. We present a 26-year-old lady, three months post-laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with a complicated postoperative course due to poor oral intake and recurrent vomiting, who presented with bilateral limb weakness and vision loss of five days duration. Physical …

Postpartum thiamine deficiency in a Karen displaced population.

BACKGROUND: Before its recognition, infantile beriberi was the leading cause of infant death in camps for displaced persons of the Karen ethnic minority on Thailand's western border. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to document thiamine status in the peripartum period to examine the current supplementation program and the correlation between the clinical manifestations of thiamine deficiency and a biochemical measure of thiamine status. DESIGN: Women were enrolled prospectively at 30 wk of gestation and were followed up weekly until delivery and at 3 mo postpartum. Thiamine supplementation during…

Excitatory effect of thiamin on CA1 pyramidal neurones in rat hippocampal slices in vitro.

Clinically, acute thiamin deficiency may lead to Wernicke encephalopathy and fulminant cardial beriberi. Both diseases respond to high parenteral doses of thiamin. The cofactor role of intracellular thiamin diphosphate has been thoroughly investigated, but an additional acute effect of unphosphorylated extracellular thiamin has been postulated but not elucidated. In order to investigate the role of thiamin at the membrane level in the central nervous system, a study using a well-established in vitro rat hippocampal slice model was designed. Hippocampal slices were perfused with 0.5, 0.75 and 1…

Effect of thiamine deficiency in pregnant and lactating rats on the brain of their offspring.

In an attempt to create a model of human infantile beriberi, pregnant rats were fed, from the 10th day of pregnancy through lactation, a low-thiamine diet. Controls were either pair-fed or offered a nutritionally complete diet ad libitum. Dams exhibited symptoms of thiamine deficiency after 30 days on the experimental diet, whereas the their pups displayed signs of thiamine deficiency from the 14th postnatal day. Brain transketolase activity was depressed in day-old thiamine-deficient pups, and brain pyruvic acid levels were elevated after the 7th postnatal day. From the 14th postnatal day, br…

Christiaan Eijkman. First bacteriologist at Utrecht University, Nobel laureate for his work on vitamins.

One century ago, Christiaan Eijkman was appointed Professor of Bacteriology at the Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Despite his appointment to teach bacteriology, Christiaan Eijkman made his main contribution to medical science not in bacteriology but in nutrition. He discovered that Beri-Beri was not an infection but a nutritient deficiency (later called vitamin-deficiency) and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1929 for these observations. These landmark studies were made in the former Dutch East Indies. Interestingly, the results of his studies were presented in the Dutch langu

Clinical and subclinical thiamine deficiency in clinical practice.

Six patients with gross thiamine deficiency found during normal psychiatric practice in England are described. Two surveys of newly admitted psychiatric patients are recounted. A major degree of biochemical deficiency, with or without minimal clinical manifestations, was found. Only three (1%) of 326 patients surveyed had gross clinical deficiency. It is thought that severe thiamine deficiency, though rare in the Western countries, has not been eradicated. Deficiency may cause psychiatric conditions like Wernicke's encephalopathy or may be a secondary feature in mental illness due to anorexia,
