Foreign substance injection for esthetic purposes associated with delayed unilateral sciatic nerve impairment: A surgical case report.

Attempts at body contour modifications have led to the use of different alloplastic materials that can irreversibly damage health and risk patients' lives. These modeling substances can induce a general autoimmune inflammatory response, producing a very heterogeneous clinical spectrum ranging from mild and severe systemic to local symptoms that sometimes affect peripheral nerves. We report a unique case of a tumor-like sciatic nerve impairment produced months after the injection of a modeling substance into the buttocks for esthetic purposes. The patient was treated with a surgical decompressi

Utilization of Iodinated SpaceOAR Vue™ During Robotic Prostate Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) to Identify the Rectal-Prostate Interface and Spare the Rectum: A Case Report.

We describe the utilization of SpaceOAR Vue™, a new iodinated rectal spacer, during Robotic Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for a Prostate Cancer Patient with a contraindication to Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A 69-year-old Caucasian male presented with unfavorable intermediate risk prostate cancer and elected to undergo SBRT. His medical history was significant for atrial fibrillation on Rivaroxaban with a pacemaker. He was felt to be at increased risk of radiation proctitis following SBRT due to the inability to accurately contour the anterior rectal wall at the prostate apex witho

An uncommon case mimicking cervical trauma: Os odontoideum.

Os odontoideum is a separate odontoid process from the body of the axis. It is the most common anomaly of the odontoid process. Patients with this condition can be asymptomatic or present with a wide range of neurological dysfunctions. It may cause cervical instability, atlantoaxial dislocation and myelopathy. This anomaly can mimic Type I and II odontoid fractures. There is a role for conservative treatment of an asymptomatic incidentally found, radiologically stable and non-compressive os odontoideum. However, surgical treatment has a definitive role in symptomatic cases. In this study, the

Injection of fat for soft tissue augmentation.

Perinephric rabbit fat was divided into small particles with scissors and razor blades and then injected subcutaneously into the donor rabbit. The injected fat was compared with surgically implanted fat. Subcutaneous augmentation with both types of fat resulted in similar findings. Grossly, 40% of injection and implantation sites were palpable after 16 to 36 weeks of observation. Histologically, fat was present at practically every site, but with a variable amount of fat cell destruction. This study demonstrates that the author's method for dividing and injecting fat produces comparable result

Neuronal alterations in experimental Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a Golgi study.

Neuronal alterations in the cortex of hamsters with experimental Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) were studied utilizing the rapid Golgi and Golgi-Hortega methods. In terminally ill hamsters many pyramidal neurons showed a considerable decrease in the number of dendritic spines often with moderate irregularities in size. The shafts of apical dendrites in some cortical pyramidal neurons were tortuous. Occasional neuronal cell bodies were irregular in contour and showed hole-like empty spaces. Two types of focal swellings, which involved both axons and dendrites, were observed; focal swellings we

Relationship between skin and body condition in three species of baleen whales.

The assessment of free-ranging cetacean health through the study of skin conditions using photographs has gained prominence in recent years. However, little attention has been given to the relationships between cetacean skin conditions, species, and body condition. To explore this relationship among baleen whale species along the northwestern coast of Spain, we employed a non-invasive method involving photograph analysis. In this study, we examined skin conditions (including injuries, epizoites and ectoparasites, pigmentation disorders, skin lesions, and anatomical malformations) and body cond

Effect of stomach size on organs at risk in pancreatic stereotactic body radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, the organs at risk (OARs) should be carefully determined when performing pancreatic stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). We conducted a simulation study to examine the effect of the stomach size on the radiation dose to the OARs when performing pancreatic SBRT. METHODS: Twenty-five cases were included in this study. Pancreatic head and body tumors were 2-cm-sized pseudotumors, which were included as gross target volume (GTV) contours. The stomach, pancreas, small intestine, liver, kidneys, and spinal cord were considered as the OARs. The prescription dose f

Shape, texture and statistical features for classification of benign and malignant vertebral compression fractures in magnetic resonance images.

PURPOSE: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) result in partial collapse of vertebral bodies. They usually are nontraumatic or occur with low-energy trauma in the elderly secondary to different etiologies, such as insufficiency fractures of bone fragility in osteoporosis (benign fractures) or vertebral metastasis (malignant fractures). Our study aims to classify VCFs in T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI). METHODS: We used the median sagittal planes of lumbar spine MRIs from 63 patients (38 women and 25 men) previously diagnosed with VCFs. The lumbar vertebral bodies were manually s

Correction of gynecomastia in body builders and patients with good physique.

BACKGROUND: Temporary gynecomastia in the form of breast buds is a common finding in young male subjects. In adults, permanent gynecomastia is an aesthetic impairment that may result in interest in surgical correction. Gynecomastia in body builders creates an even greater distress for patients seeking surgical treatment because of the demands of professional competition. The authors present their experience with gynecomastia in body builders as the largest study of such a group in the literature. METHODS: Between the years 1980 and 2013, 1574 body builders were treated surgically for gynecoma

Outcomes of patients older than 55 years undergoing abdominoplasty after bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery has become widely performed for treating patients with morbid obesity, and the age limits are being pushed further and further as the procedure proves safe. After massive weight loss, many of those patients seek body-contouring surgery for excess skin and fat. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the feasibility and the safety of abdominoplasty in patients older than 55 years old after bariatric surgery. SETTING: University hospital medical center. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected data from patients aged older than 55 years who had unde

Comparison between lipofilling and a nonabsorbable filler for facial wasting rehabilitation in HIV-positive patients.

BACKGROUND: Several treatments have been described for facial wasting rehabilitation in HIV-positive patients. In this article, we compare l … ated lipodistrophy more extensively with lipofilling because, after harvesting the fat graft, other body contouring procedures also can be performed; there is a better aesthetic outcome in facial rehabilitation performed with lipofilling, probably due to the possibility to fill deeper than with nonabsorbable fillers.

Aesthetic Removal of Foreign Body Granulomas of Forehead Via Pretrichial Approach.

In the field of plastic surgery, various filler types have been developed, which are widely used for cosmetic or reconstruction purposes. However, unregulated substances often injected by unlicensed practitioners may cause difficult-to-treat side effects, such as foreign body granulomas. Since the forehead is an exposed area and the lesions are likely extensive, complete surgical removal with inconspicuous scar can be difficult. In addition, pharmacological treatments, such as steroids, have only a temporary effect. The authors report successful cases of foreign body removal combined with subc

Possible ARDS Following Cosmetic Lipolysis: A Case Report Urging Caution in Aesthetic Medicine.

BACKGROUND Fat-dissolving (lipolysis) injections are increasingly performed as non-surgical aesthetic procedures for body contouring. Although generally considered safe, these interventions can rarely result in severe and potentially life-threatening complications, especially in unregulated settings. We report an unusual case of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) following cosmetic lipolysis injections in a previously healthy woman. CASE REPORT A 41-year-old Vietnamese woman with no significant past medical history developed acute progressive dyspnea and bilateral chest pain about 30 m…

Outcomes of standardized drain-free abdominoplasty after massive weight loss: A retrospective analysis of 2533 post-bariatric patients.

This retrospective study evaluates the outcomes of 2533 standardized drain‑free abdominoplasties performed after massive weight loss, representing one of the largest series reported in post‑bariatric body‑contouring surgery. All procedures were carried out by the same surgical team across two high‑volume centers using a uniform protocol based on progressive tension sutures (PTS), meticulous flap handling, and structured postoperative management. The cohort reflected typical post‑bariatric characteristics, with a strong female predominance, mean BMI in the obese range, and a short average hospi

Evaluation of safety and efficacy of noninvasive radiofrequency technology for submental rejuvenation.

Recently, a number of modalities have been used for noninvasive fat reduction. Radiofrequency (RF) technology is a promising tool for noninvasive body and face contouring. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel noninvasive RF technology for the reduction of submental fat with 6 months of follow-up. Twenty-one subjects with submental fat accumulation were treated twice at 1-month intervals with monopolar RF, which could also be used to monitor real-time temperature. The submental fat thickness and the circumference were evaluated with ultrasonography and a tape me

Computational analysis of skin folding after bariatric surgery.

Obesity is a growing global health issue. Bariatric surgery enables rapid weight loss but often results in excess skin as a side effect. Body-contouring surgery can remove this excess skin, but its costs limit access to patients. The severity of skinfolds varies among post-Massive Weight Loss (p-MWL) patients, though the underlying reasons remain poorly understood. To investigate this, we developed a finite element model incorporating a kinematic growth model, to simulate adipose tissue shrinkage and analyze skin folding patterns following massive fat loss. We specifically investigated how ski

Automated segmentation of deep brain structures from Inversion-Recovery MRI.

Methods for the automated segmentation of brain structures are a major subject of medical research. The small structures of the deep brain have received scant attention, notably for lack of manual delineations by medical experts. In this study, we assessed an automated segmentation of a novel clinical dataset containing White Matter Attenuated Inversion-Recovery (WAIR) MRI images and five manually segmented structures (substantia nigra (SN), subthalamic nucleus (STN), red nucleus (RN), mammillary body (MB) and mammillothalamic fascicle (MT-fa)) in 53 patients with severe Parkinson's disease. Use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Postoperative Radiation Therapy Planning in Patients with Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone Instrumentation.

PURPOSE: Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) instrumentation is being used more frequently in the spinal oncology landscape. Better visualization with this material allows for more precise postoperative stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) planning using either computed tomography (CT)-myelography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. We compared the dosimetric planning equivalencies and outcomes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty-six consecutively treated patients were reviewed who underwent spinal fusion using CFR-PEEK instrumentation for spine metastases follow
