[Oro-esophageal candidiasis resistant to fluconazole in patients with AIDS].

BACKGROUND: Fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans has been seldom reported in the literature. in this study, two clinical cases of oro-esophageal candidosis resistant to this antifungal drug are described. METHOD: Infection was confirmed by isolation of yeasts (culture of mouth swabs, oesophagoscopy and histology of biopsy specimens). In vitro antifungal susceptibility tests were performed with standard methods (NCCLS). RESULTS: Clinical and microbiological fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans was isolated. CONCLUSIONS: Causes of development of resistances are commented, and the role of

Attenuation of amphotericin-B nephrotoxicity in the candidiasis rat model.

Dose-limiting nephrotoxicity has hampered the clinical usefulness of amphotericin-B (AmpB). Recently, vascular decongestants, such as pentoxifylline, have shown benefit in reducing drug-associated renal damage of AmpB in rats. The present study investigated a dose-dependent protection of a structurally similar methylxanthine, HWA-448, in the candidiasis rat model given a single dose of AmpB. Forty-eight hours after inoculation with Candida albicans, each rat was treated with 0.8 mg/kg of AmpB or sterile water; animals were further randomized to receive 0.5, 1, 5, or 10 mg/kg i.v. of HWA-448 or…

Somatization disorder and the chronic candidiasis syndrome: a possible overlap.

The close similarity between the complex of symptoms found in the recently described Chronic Candidiasis Syndrome and the Somatization Disorder is pointed out. Some evidence in support of the validity of the Chronic Candidiasis Syndrome is presented including some studies from the past and more recent medical literature regarding symptoms, physiological effects, and immunological findings accompanying Candida infections. Logical possibilities for the relationship of each disorder with the other is discussed. It is concluded that there is a possible overlap of the two disorders and that some pa…

An assessment of sonography in the diagnosis and management of neonatal renal candidiasis.

The renal sonographic findings in six cases of neonatal candidiasis and 13 cases previously reported in the literature are reviewed. Focal and diffuse parenchymal changes and obstruction due to mycetoma formation were frequent features. In the current series the sonographic changes were found to bear an inconstant relationship to the probable time of onset of the infection. In addition, apparent sonographic deterioration occurred in neonates well after adequate antifungal treatment was initiated. In view of the potential toxicity of systemic antifungal therapy, sonographic renal parenchymal ch…

[Visceral candidiasis in conjunction with "marked eosinophilia" in acute opisthorchiasis].

A male of 31 has developed a marked eosinophilia associated with acute opisthorchiasis. The following heavy antibiotic treatment led to candidiasis of the liver, pancreas and lymph nodes. The study covered pathomorphology of the liver granulomatous inflammation which ran with formation of the specific crystalloid structures attributed to extensive eosinophilic decomposition. The reaction to immunoglobulins is proposed as an elective marked of pathogenic fungi in tissues.

Placental candidiasis: report of three cases with a review of the literature.

Three new cases of placental candidiasis are reported. Two were associated with fetal cutaneous candidiasis and one with fetal systemic candidiasis. The systemic case was associated with an intrauterine contraceptive device. Infection of the placenta results in small 'granulomata' under the surface of the cord and a diffuse chorioamnionitis of the membranes and chorionic plate. In reviewing the 24 previously reported cases it can be seen that systemic. Candida infection of the fetus results in prematurity and death, infection can occur across intact membranes, and systemic candidiasis in the f…

Comparative effects of carrageenan on systemic candidiasis and listeriosis in mice.

Carrageenan, a toxic substance for the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS), increase drastically the susceptibility of mice against Listeria monocytogenes challenge but induces concurrently an increasing resistance against systemic candidiasis and granulocytosis. These results corroborate the minor role played by MPS and suggest that polymorphonuclear cells play a major role in non-specific resistance of mice against systemic candidiasis.

Flucytosine in the management of genitourinary candidiasis: 5 years of experience.

Candidiasis often is the final insult to the critically ill patient. Flucytosine, an orally administered antifungal agent, was used in the treatment of 225 patients with genitourinary candidiasis. Criteria for treatment included clinical manifestations, high urine colony counts of Candida, serologic findings and in vitro sensitivity of Candida to flucytosine. Infection was eradicated in 212 patients (94 per cent), as determined by clinical and laboratory criteria. The only significant adverse drug effect was reversible agranulocytosis, which ccurred in 2 patients. Thirteen patients (6 per cent…

Efficacy of econazole in the treatment of candidiasis and other vaginal discharges.

Three hundred and thirty Black pregnant patients attending the Baragwanath Hospital antenatal clinic were treated for symptomatic vaginal discharge with econazole (Ecostatin; Squibb). Patients with positive Candida albicans cultures were treated for either 7 or 14 days. The results of treatment in both groups are presented.

Treatment of paracoccidioidomycosis, candidiasis, chromomycosis, lobomycosis, and mycetoma with ketoconazole.

The authors present the use of ketoconazole in 27 cases of paracoccidioidomycosis, eight of mycetoma, seven of chromomycosis, four of systemic candidiasis and one of lobomycosis. The drug was administered orally in a dosage of 200 to 400 mg per day within a period of up to 90 days. The results of the treatment for paracoccidioidomycosis were of cicatrization of the cutaneous lesions in three to four weeks in 24 patients and in two, from six to seven weeks. Out of 27 patients, 14 presented pulmonary lesions. The evolution within a 90-day period showed radiological cure in one case, improvement …

Evidence for defective immunoregulation in the syndrome of familial candidiasis endocrinopathy.

We studied three children with candidiasis endocrinopathy syndrome, together with their parents and five siblings, to explore the possibility that defective immunoregulation allows autoimmune phenomena to be involved in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. Inheritance of the syndrome appeared to be autosomal recessive. Immunologic abnormalities in this family included hypergammaglobulinemia, selective IgA deficiency, anergy, autoimmune endocrinopathies and active chronic hepatitis. Defective suppressor T-cell function was noted in the two surviving children with clinically apparent disease and i…
