Cardiology was diagnosed by means of clinical, radiographic, electrocardiographic phonocardiographic, angiocardiographic, and pathological findings in 271 or 3,745 cats necropsied from January 1962 to April 1974. The affected cats can be divided into three groups on the basis of the gross and microscopic pathological lesions: 1)endocarditis and myocarditis in 20 young cats; 2)endomyocardial fibrosis and left ventricular hypertrophy in 182 cats; and 3)myocardial degeneration and biventricular dilatation in 69 cats. Of 271 affected cats, thromboembolus was observed in the aorta, and in the carot

Three white men, who died of a condition clinically diagnosed as alcoholic heart disease, showed virtually identical autopsy findings. These consisted of global cardiomegaly and absence of stigmata of arteriosclerotic, hypertensive, rheumatic or congenital heart disease. Histological examination revealed degenerative and occlusive changes in small branches of coronary arteries, associated with microscopic foci of heart muscle necrosis and scarring. In two of the cases the degenerative changes were severe and extensive in the atria. Edema of the arterioles in the early stages was followed by di

Abnormal aortic elasticity serves as a marker for cardiovascular mortality and has a negative impact on the left ventricular (LV) afterload. Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) is characterized by hypertrabeculation of the LV endomyocardial wall, with an underdeveloped endocardial helix. This may result in absence of LV twist, disturbed aortic elasticity, LV dysfunction, and ultimately premature heart failure (HF). This study compared the aortic stiffness and clinical outcome in patients with NCCM to that of a control group with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Sixty NCCM patients, matched by age

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) are phenotypically distinct inherited cardiac diseases. This case report presents a woman aged 51 years with coinheritance of pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants of the β-myosin heavy chain (MYH7 p.Glu924Lys) and plakophilin 2 (PKP2 p.Leu442Argfs∗5), each implicated in HCM and ARVC, respectively. Interestingly, she exhibits the classic HCM phenotype with a heavy arrhythmic burden but no diagnostic features of ARVC. The coinheritance of disease-causing variants in cardiomyopathies has been posited to …

The presentation of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) has overlapping features with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), though traditionally developing from different triggers, including both physical and emotional. Additionally, TC is associated with multiple comorbidities and sequelae. We present a multifactorial case of a 73-year-old female with underlying hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who presented with a high-degree atrioventricular (AV) block requiring permanent pacemaker (PPM) placement and subsequently developed TC. Patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HCM) have been theorized t

Among women with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC), the percent who develop heart failure (HF) in the peripartum period (during pregnancy or within 6 months of parturition) compared with those women who develop HF outside the peripartum period is unclear. We studied 72 women with IDC who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation for severe HF, the onset of which was in the peripartum period in 8 (11%) and outside the period in 64 (89%). Comparison of many clinical and morphologic variables between these 2 groups showed significant differences only in the ages of onset of HF, age when or
