Characteristics and outcomes of patients with postoperative cardiovascular pseudoaneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Data regarding long-term outcomes in cardiovascular pseudoaneurysms are sparse. In patients with prior cardiovascular surgery, we sought to assess characteristics and outcomes in patients with cardiovascular pseudoaneurysms (excluding ischemic left ventricular pseudoaneurysms). METHODS: We included 114 patients (mean age, 57 ± 16 years; 70% were men) with prior cardiovascular surgery who presented with paravalvular (n = 71, 59 aortic and 12 mitral valve) and ascending aortic (n = 43) pseudoaneurysms (27% with systemic infection). Baseline, surgical, and follow-up data were recorde

The Impact of Obesity on Orthopedic Upper Extremity Surgery.

Obese patients have increased rates of upper extremity injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper extremity osteoarthritis. Preoperative considerations include cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and diabetes mellitus. Intraoperative and anesthetic considerations include specialized equipment, patient positioning, and the physiology of obese patients. Postoperative considerations should include increased risk of cardiovascular complications as well as surgical site infections and malunion. Surgery of the hand and upper extremity may be less prone to the postoperative complications seen i

Status of cardiovascular PET radiation exposure and strategies for reduction: An Information Statement from the Cardiovascular PET Task Force.

Cardiovascular positron emission tomography (PET) imaging provides high-quality visual and quantitative myocardial perfusion and function images. In addition, cardiovascular PET can assess myocardial viability, myocardial inflammatory disorders such as cardiac sarcoid, and infections of implanted devices including pacemakers, ventricular assist devices, and prosthetic heart valves. As with all nuclear cardiology procedures, the benefits need to be considered in relation to the risks of exposure to radiation. When performed properly, these assessments can be obtained while simultaneously minimi

Cerebrovascular events after herpes zoster infection: a risk that should be not underestimated.

The occurrence of a cerebrovascular event after a herpes zoster (HZ) infection represents a nightmare in clinical practice, especially in those patients with concomitant cardiovascular comorbidities/risk factors and disease related per se to a higher risk of zoster infection. Moreover, the absence of a consensus opinion regarding a specific and adequate prevention of cerebrovascular events in these patients further complicates the treatment. Accumulating evidences demonstrated that HZ and HZ ophtalmicus (HZO) increase the risk of cerebrovascular events in the short-and long-term periods. Moreo

Artificial Intelligence in Cardiovascular Health: Insights into Post-COVID Public Health Challenges.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the topmost cause of the worldwide morbidity and mortality. Risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and smoking are significantly worsening the situation. The COVID-19 pandemic has powerfully highlighted the undeniable connection between viral infections and cardiovascular health. Current literature highlights that SARS-CoV-2 contributes to myocardial injury, endothelial dysfunction, thrombosis, and systemic inflammation, increasing the severity of CVD outcomes. Long COVID has also been associated with persistent cardiovascular complic

Chronic Infection and Cardiac Aging: a New Perspective on Pathogen-Associated Cardiomyopathy.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the primary driver of global mortality, with advanced age serving the most significant risk factor for their development and progression. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic infections can act as potent catalysts for cardiac decline by prematurely inducing aging phenotypes. Pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites, that evade host clearance establish a state of permanent inflammaging: a chronic, low-grade inflammatory milieu characterized by persistent cytokine signaling and leukocyte infiltration. This environment directly mirrors the sterile in

[Dapagliflozin (forxiga®) : SGLT 2 cotransporter inhibitor as glucose-lowering agent in type 2 diabetes].

Dapagliflozin, a specific inhibitor of sodium-glu¬cose cotransporters type 2 (SGLT2, inhibits glucose reabsorp¬tion in renal tubules and thus promotes glucosuria. This effect results in a reduction in fasting and postprandial glycaemia and a decrease of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), with a minor risk of hypoglycaemia, a weight reduction and a reduction in arterial blood pressure. The efficacy of empagliflozin on HbA1c reduction increases according to the level of hyper¬glycaemia but decreases in patients with renal insufficiency. Mycotic genital infections occur more frequently, especially in

Potential Relationship Between Cytomegalovirus and Cardiovascular Disease: Evidence From Observational Studies.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a member of the herpesvirus family, is a ubiquitous pathogen with high global seroprevalence. While generally asymptomatic in healthy individuals, CMV infection has been linked to certain long-term outcomes, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). This review of the epidemiological literature investigates the relationship between CMV infection and CVD by synthesising findings from population-based observational studies. A targeted literature search identified 18 studies published since 2000 that reported on laboratory-confirmed CMV and CVD outcomes, including myocardial

Cardiac inflammation in COVID-19: Lessons from heart failure.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common co-morbidity associated with COVID-19 and the fatality rate in COVID-19 patients with CVD is higher compared to other comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes. Preliminary data suggest that COVID-19 may also cause or worsen cardiac injury in infected patients through multiple mechanisms such as 'cytokine storm', endotheliosis, thrombosis, lymphocytopenia etc. Autopsies of COVID-19 patients reveal an infiltration of inflammatory mononuclear cells in the myocardium, confirming the role of the immune system in mediating cardiovascular damage

Oral hygiene status of individuals with cardiovascular diseases and associated risk factors.

Dentist and oral health screening may be the latest weapon in identifying persons at risk of cardiovascular disease. Oral infections, specifically periodontitis, may confer independent risks for different systemic conditions. The risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases also suggest that the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes works in both ways. The aim of this study was to support and strengthen the association and relationship between oral hygiene status of individuals with cardiovascular diseases and its associated risk factors. A simple random sampling was ca

Cardiac imaging in patients with tropical diseases-a scientific statement of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) of the European Society of Cardiology and the Cardiovascular Imaging Department of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (DICSBC).

Tropical diseases (TDs), or neglected TDs, affect over 1 billion subjects globally, primarily in impoverished regions. Despite their impact, these diseases are often overlooked on the global health agenda, with limited resources allocated to their control. TDs are caused by various pathogens, including viruses, protozoa, helminths, and bacteria. Climate change and migration have led to the spread of TDs beyond tropical regions, highlighting the need for healthcare providers worldwide to address their management. The World Health Organization has released a road map for the prevention, control,

Causes of death among 93.637 hip fracture patients- data based on the Danish National Registry of causes of death.

PURPOSE: Excess mortality among hip fracture patients is well documented. Less is known, however, about the causes of death in this group of patients, although existing literature suggests that bronchopneumonia and cardiovascular diseases constitute the leading causes of death. In this study, we investigated the causes of death in Danish hip fracture patients, who died within 30-days after sustaining a hip fracture, with a focus on differences in causes of death between men and women and between different age groups. Furthermore, the frequency of potentially preventable causes of death such as

Targeting the Ca2+ signaling toolkit as an alternative strategy to mitigate SARS-CoV-2-induced cardiovascular adverse events.

Ca2+ signaling events are essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, regulating critical functions in both endothelial and cardiac cells. SARS-CoV-2 infection impinges this delicate balance, leading to severe cardiovascular complications. SARS-CoV-2 binds to the ACE2 receptor on endothelial and cardiomyocyte surfaces, triggering abnormal increases in intracellular Ca2+ levels that promote endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and hypercoagulation. In endothelial cells, this dysregulation activates a pro-inflammatory state and compromises vascular integrity. In cardiomyocytes, SARS-CoV-2

C-reactive protein, cardiovascular risk, and renal disease in a remote Australian Aboriginal community.

Rates of cardiovascular and renal disease in Australian Aboriginal communities are high, but we do not know the contribution of inflammation to these diseases in this setting. In the present study, we sought to examine the distribution of C-reactive protein (CRP) and other markers of inflammation and their relationships with cardiovascular risk markers and renal disease in a remote Australian Aboriginal community. The study included 237 adults (58% of the adult population) in a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory of Australia. Main outcome measures were CRP, fibrinogen and Ig

Infectious diseases in Iran: a bird's eye view.

Thanks to improved health standards in Iran over the past three decades, we have witnessed a shift in the causes of death in Iran from infectious causes to non-communicable diseases-mainly cardiovascular disorders, cancers, and road traffic injuries. The incidence and prevalence of many infectious diseases, such as many parasitic infections, have fallen significantly; there have been no reported cases of dracunculiasis in Iran since the mid-1970s. Great strides have also been made towards the elimination of schistosomiasis in Iran. However, we still have some problems with cutaneous leishmania
