Ultrastructural and histological studies of brains of ferrets inoculated with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: similarities to human disease.

Similarities to human subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were revealed in a study of the brains of ferrets inoculated with a cell associated measles virus originally isolated from an SSPE patient. The similarities were greatest in animals that showed neurological signs 3-4 months after inoculation and had high titers of neutralizing antibodies against measles virus. These included dense core particles, nuclear bodies, alterations of basement membranes of small blood vessels, plasma cells, distorted myelin, and rod-like structures in some nuclei. Other abnormalities seen were Hirano bod

ABNORMALITIES OF THE FEMALE GENITAL ORGANS IN MINK HETEROZYGOUS FOR THE HEGGEDAL FACTOR (SHADOW FACTOR).

In Sapphire Shadow (aa pp SHs), Blue Shadow (AA pp SHs) and Blue Shadow Carrier for Aleutian (Aa pp SHs) a malformation of the female genital organs has been demonstrated and described. The malformations seem to be restricted to the areas which are formed by the Müllerian ducts and chiefly affect the vagina and cervix, corpus and cornua uteri, whilst the uterine tubes are as a rule normal. Among females which are empty after their first breeding season the frequency of these malformations was almost 42 % and among virginal young females 18.5 %. The abnormalities seem to be due to a pleiotropic

Is social media the new wet market? Social media platforms facilitate the online sale of bushmeat in West Africa.

Social media provides a platform for wildlife crime syndicates to access a global consumer-driven market. Whilst studies have uncovered the online trade in wildlife, the availability of wild meat (bushmeat) has not been assessed. To investigate the sale of wild meat online, we analysed 563 posts published between 2018 and 2022 from six West African Facebook pages selected using predetermined search criteria. Across 1511 images and 18 videos, we visually identified 25 bushmeat species-level taxa including mammals (six Rodentia, five Artiodactyla, three Carnivora, two Pholidota, one Primate, two…

Comparative sacral morphology and the reconstructed tail lengths of five extinct primates: Proconsul heseloni, Epipliopithecus vindobonensis, Archaeolemur edwardsi, Megaladapis grandidieri, and Palaeopropithecus kelyus.

This study evaluated the relationship between the morphology of the sacrum-the sole bony link between the tail or coccyx and the rest of the body-and tail length (including presence/absence) and function using a comparative sample of extant mammals spanning six orders (Primates, Carnivora, Rodentia, Diprotodontia, Pilosa, Scandentia; N = 472). Phylogenetically-informed regression methods were used to assess how tail length varied with respect to 11 external and internal (i.e., trabecular) bony sacral variables with known or suspected biomechanical significance across all mammals, only primates…

Endoparasites in large carnivores (Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae) in the Nearctic and Palearctic-an update with emphasis on the wildlife-domestic animal-human triangle.

Carnivorous wild mammals often harbor a high diversity and high prevalence of parasites, many of which possess zoonotic potential or are of relevance for domestic animal health. In this Chapter, we summarize studies on endoparasites of the most common wild canids (red and arctic foxes, golden jackals, coyotes, grey wolves and raccoon dogs), felids (lynxes and European wildcats) and bears (brown and black bears) in the Palearctic and Nearctic regions since the turn of the millennium. Overall, the red fox stands out as the best-studied species, with the highest endoparasite diversity reported, a

Eyes in the wild: Thelazia callipaeda in wild carnivores of Croatia.

BACKGROUND: Thelazia callipaeda is an emerging zoonotic nematode that infects the eyes of domestic and wild mammals across Europe and is transmitted by drosophilid flies of the genus Phortica. Despite increasing reports across the continent, its distribution in wildlife in southeastern Europe remains poorly understood. To our knowledge, this study represents the first comprehensive parasitological and molecular investigation of T. callipaeda in wild carnivores in Croatia. METHODS: Between 2020 and 2023, a total of 2632 animals, either legally hunted or found dead, were examined. These include

Occurrence of Dirofilaria repens in wild carnivores in Poland.

Dirofilaria repens is an expanding vector-borne zoonotic parasite of canines and other carnivores. Sub-clinically infected dogs constitute the most important reservoir of the parasite and the source of infection for its mosquito vectors. However, occurrence of D. repens infection in wild animals may contribute to the transmission of the parasite to humans and may explain the endemicity of filariae in newly invaded regions. The aim of the current study was to determine the occurrence of D. repens in 511 blood and spleen samples from seven species of wild carnivores (wolves, red foxes, Eurasian

Update of the helminth fauna in Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Poland.

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is a strictly protected species of large carnivore in Poland. It inhabits forest complexes in north-eastern Poland and the Carpathian region in southern Poland. The status of the lynx within Poland requires special attention because its range decreased between 1980 and 2001 and has not yet recovered. One of the factors negatively affecting lynx populations is diseases, particularly parasites. The helminth fauna of the Eurasian lynx is not fully known in Poland. Previous coprological studies revealed that Polish lynx have been infected with seven species of nematod

Scavenging by mammalian carnivores on prairie dog colonies: implications for the spread of plague.

Plague causes mass mortality of prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in shortgrass steppe. Although the pathogen, the bacterium Yersinia pestis, is spread within colonies by flea bites or contact between infected hosts, it is unclear how Y. pestis is transported over long distances between isolated colonies. One possibility is that wideranging, plague-resistant mammalian carnivores pick up fleas when scavenging prairie dog carcasses. Using guinea pigs as surrogates for prairie dogs, we compared how quickly scavengers discovered carcasses on active prairie dog colonies, on colonies recently exti

Determination of efficacy of rabies vaccine in the Saratov region.

The most complicated situation concerning rabies is seen in the Saratov region. The basic reservoir of rabies in this region is wild carnivores. A study was conduted in three districts of the Saratov region to define the efficiency of measures taken with the "Sinrab" rabies vaccine containing "RV-97" used for oral immunisation of wild animals. As a result of the experiment it was established that specific prevention of rabies in wildlife in enzootic territories resulted in a decrease of rabies cases.

[Rabies epizootic situation in the Novosibirsk region in 1997 - 2003].

Starting from the end of 1997, a rise in the epizooty of rabies with peaks in 1998 and 2002 was noted. 550 cases of rabies were registered in wild and domestic animals, as well as one lethal case of rabies in man in 2001. Wild carnivorous animals are traditionally regarded as the reservoir and source of rabies virus (38%). In the Novosibirsk region this disease was registered in badgers, wild herbivorous animals, myomorph rodents, hares, marmots. Urban cases of rabies constituted 23%, cases of rabies among agricultural animals constituted 14% of all rabies cases in the Novosibirsk region.

Ultrasonic measurements of second and third trimester fetuses to predict gestational age and date of parturition in captive and wild spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta.

Parturition in spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) is a fascinating event to witness, as females of this species are highly masculinized and give birth through a penis-like clitoris. Furthermore, shortly after birth, a high rate of aggression occurs between littermates that can sometimes end in siblicide. To study these events thoroughly, an accurate estimate of the date of parturition is necessary. To this end, we performed transabdominal ultrasounds every 20-30 days in five captive spotted hyenas of known gestational age, beginning approximately 30 days after mating. We measured the femur lengt
