Emerging viral encephalitides in dogs and cats.

Few viral pathogens resulting in encephalitis in dogs and cats have emerged over the past decade or so. All are the result of penetration through presumed species barriers and all are considered zoonoses or possible zoonotic pathogens. In all cases, encephalitis is a rare event that has low morbidity but high mortality. More viruses are likely to emerge as pathogenic in our domesticated carnivorous companions as our habitats continue to overlap with the shrinking wildlife habitats. Hopefully, however, none reach the level of distinction that was once held by rabies virus.

Amyloidosis in black-footed cats (Felis nigripes).

A high prevalence of systemic amyloidosis was documented in the black-footed cat (Felis nigripes) based on a retrospective review of necropsy tissues (n = 38) submitted as part of ongoing disease surveillance. Some degree of amyloid deposition was present in 33 of 38 (87%) of the examined cats, and amyloidosis was the most common cause of death (26/38, 68%). Amyloid deposition was most severe in the renal medullary interstitium (30/33, 91%) and glomeruli (21/33, 63%). Other common sites included the splenic follicular germinal centers (26/31, 84%), gastric lamina propria (9/23, 39%), and intes…

Coccidioidomycosis in dogs and cats: a review.

The dimorphic fungi Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are the causative agents of coccidioidomycosis. Dogs and cats residing in and visiting endemic areas are at risk of exposure to infectious arthrospores. The primary infection is pulmonary and frequently results in chronic cough. Disseminated disease is common and causes cutaneous, osseous, cardiac, ocular, nervous system, or other organ disease. Radiographic changes include a variable degree of interstitial pulmonary infiltration, hilar lymphadenopathy, and osseous lesions. Serological titers support the diagnosis, but definit…

Tracheostomy in cats: 23 cases (1998-2006).

Tracheostomies can be used to provide a patent airway in animals with upper airway obstruction but have been reported to be more difficult to manage in cats than in other animals. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively describe the indications, complications and outcome of cats undergoing tracheostomy. Twenty-three cats underwent tracheostomy for laryngeal mass (n=13), trauma (n=5) and upper airway swelling (n=5). Major and minor complications were recorded in 10 and 17 cats, respectively. Seventeen cats were discharged to home, four cats were euthanased and two cats died in hospital.…

Rostral cerebellar arterial infarct in two cats.

A 10-year-old female neutered domestic shorthair (DSH) cat and a 6-year-old female neutered Siamese cat were presented following a peracute onset of decerebellate rigidity and a cerebellar vestibular syndrome, respectively. In both cats, physical examination and routine blood tests were unremarkable, as was routine analysis of cerebrospinal fluid obtained from the DSH cat. Based on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features - focal wedge-shaped lesion in the cerebellum characterised by hyperintensity in T2-weighted, T2( *)-gradient echo and fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images…

Pulmonary lesions in cats with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common endocrinopathy of cats and humans. Although few studies have examined the effects of DM on the pulmonary system, changes in pulmonary function and immunology in humans with type I and II diabetes, and pulmonary lesions in a murine diabetic model have been documented. Our objective was to determine whether pulmonary lesions occurred in cats with DM. Medical records and necropsy evaluations of 42 cats with DM were compared with those of 45 age-matched, nondiabetic cats for the presence of clinical evidence of respiratory disease and pulmonary histopathological …

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy in two cats.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a disease characterised by infiltration of the myocardium by adipose and fibrous tissue. The disease is an important cause of sudden death in humans, but has rarely been described in animals. This report describes ARVC in two cats with right-sided congestive heart failure. One cat had also experienced previous episodes of syncope. Standard six-lead and 24-hour (Holter) electrocardiogram recording revealed complete atrioventricular block and multiform ventricular ectopics in both cats, with the addition of ventricular tachycardia, ventri…

Congenital and hereditary ocular abnormalities in cats.

Congenital and inherited ocular diseases are reported less frequently in the cat than the dog. The 2 species also differ in their array of disorders, with familiar canine abnormalities like cataracts overshadowed by unique feline diseases such as eyelid agenesis and corneal sequestration. Organized according to the primary ocular structure affected and commingling congenital and inherited disorders in each section, the review begins with multiple ocular anomalies and their impact on globe-orbit relationship. Adnexal disorders include eyelid agenesis, entropion, dermoid, and nictitans gland pro

Decreased sodium:potassium ratios in cats: 49 cases.

BACKGROUND: Sodium:potassium (Na:K) ratios are often reported in feline biochemical panels, although the importance of this measurement has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to document the range of feline disease states associated with a decreased Na:K ratio, to determine the prevalence of this biochemical abnormality in a referral hospital population, and to identify any particular disease that was more likely to have a decreased Na:K ratio. METHODS: A group of 49 cats with decreased Na:K ratios was compared with a group of 50 cats with normal Na:K ratios that …

Histoplasmosis infection in two cats from California.

Systemic mycotic infections are typically localized to specific geographic regions of the country, because the organisms involved have certain environmental requirements for growth. Suspicion of infection relies on travel to or residence in recognized endemic regions. This report describes infection with histoplasmosis in two indoor cats from central California, an area not considered to be endemic for the disease. Systemic mycotic infections should be considered as differential diagnoses in any cat with compatible clinical signs, regardless of travel history or residence, especially if the ca…

Bacterial corneal diseases in dogs and cats.

Corneal diseases are very common in small animals. Corneal disease associated with bacterial agents is frequent in the dog and maybe less frequent in the cat. The medical history, important steps of the ophthalmic examination, and the ophthalmic diagnostic tests that are relevant in such corneal conditions are outlined. Bacterial corneal diseases in dogs and cats are most commonly considered in one of two categories--bacterial ulcerative keratitis and corneal abscesses. The clinical aspects of these two entities as well as the therapeutic strategies available for general practitioners and opht…

Incidence of cryptorchidism in dogs and cats.

Over a period of 54 months, 3518 dogs and 3806 cats were castrated; 240 of the dogs and 50 of the cats were cryptorchid. Pedigree dogs, in particular the German shepherd dog, boxer and chihuahua were over-represented. Among the dogs, right-sided inguinal cryptorchidism was the most common form, followed by right-sided abdominal cryptorchidism. The location of the affected testicle(s) was most variable in the boxer. Among the cats, left- or right-sided inguinal cryptorchidism were the most common forms of the condition.

Experimental infection of cats with Chlamydophila felis.

Cats experimentally infected with a British isolate of Chlamydophila felis (C. felis), B166 strain, by droplet into the eye and nose developed conjunctivitis, mild rhinitis and fever. The chlamydophila were first isolated from conjunctiva, nictitating membrane and then from lung, tonsil, liver, spleen, kidney, nasal and vaginal swabs and blood. These results indicate that C. felis B166 strain first infected and replicated in the conjunctiva and nictitating membrane in cats with symptoms which were mostly limited to conjunctivitis, and then pervaded the whole body by bacteremia.

Intratubal insemination with fresh semen in cats.

There have been few reports of artificial insemination using fresh feline semen because of difficulties in collecting semen. It has been shown previously that the number of spermatozoa required for fertilization of cats by intravaginal insemination and unilateral intrauterine horn insemination are 8.0 x 10(7) and 8.0 x 10(6), respectively. There have been no reports of intratubal insemination of cats. Therefore, a study was designed to determine the number of spermatozoa necessary to fertilize cats by intratubal insemination with fresh semen. Four male and 25 mixed breed female cats were used.…
