Cecal Mucosal Myxoma: The First Report of a New Type of Mesenchymal Colon Polyp.

Myxomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms of unknown etiology that most commonly occur in the cardiac atrium; however, other reported sites include the skin, joints, skeletal muscles, maxillofacial bones, and sinonasal tract. Myxomas involving the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are rare and are limited to a few published case reports. We are presenting, to our knowledge, the first case report of a mucosal myxoma in the colon presenting as a colonic polyp. A 49-year-old woman underwent a screening colonoscopy and was found to have a 0.2-cm sessile polyp in the cecum. Histologically, the polyp was c

Perforated caecal carcinoma masquerading as lower limb necrotising fasciitis: lessons learnt.

A 69-year-old man was admitted with non-resolving right leg cellulitis. Subsequent skin changes over the calf and discharging pus suggested necrotising fasciitis. After several wound debridements of the leg and imaging, the patient was found to have an iliopsoas abscess due to a metastatic perforated caecal tumour extending along the medial thigh to the calf. No micro-organisms indicative of typical necrotising fasciitis were isolated from the wound. The patient had an ileocaecal resection, and his leg was reconstructed with a split thickness skin graft. He continues to do well postoperatively

Incarcerated Amyand hernia with simultaneous rupture of an adenocarcinoma in an inguinal hernia sac: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: An Amyand's hernia is a rare occurrence of an inguinal hernia, with an estimated prevalence of 1%. The major complications of an Amyand's hernia include necrotizing fasciitis of the anterior abdominal wall and secondary intestinal perforation. Though the incidence of this type of hernia is low, the appendix may easily become initially incarcerated, possibly leading to strangulation and perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 92-year-old female patient presented to our emergency department with clinical signs of an incarcerated right inguinal hernia, accompanied by fever. A clinical ex

[A gastrointestinal stromal tumour of the caecum in a pony with colic].

A 25-year-old pony mare was presented to the clinic with preliminarily reported severe acute colic. The pony during the previous week had shown inappetence, apathy and fever of unknown origin. Clinical examination and placement of a gastric tube were indicative of a secondary gastric dilation. Rectal exploration found moderate caecal meteorism with a tensed and painful medial taenia as well as a dilated and fluid-filled small intestine. In addition, a solid, mobile, non-painful structure of approximately 10 cm diameter was palpated ventrally. A hyperechogenic mass close to the caecum was detec

Appendicular abscess presenting as an infiltrating bladder tumour.

STUDY DESIGN: Resident's case problem. BACKGROUND: Patients often present to physical therapists with chief complaints of neck pain, occipital headache, and dizziness associated with a past history of cervical spine injury. These symptoms may be associated with various cervical spine conditions, including craniocervical junction (CCJ) hypermobility. DIAGNOSIS: This report reviews the history, physical exam, and diagnostic imaging findings of a patient with the above symptoms. This patient, who had a history of multiple cervical spine injuries, was examined with 2 manual therapy provocative t

[Intestinal occlusion caused by cecal carcinoid].

It is possible that carcinoids present themselves by a surgical emergency, without a <<classic syndrome>>. For these reasons, whenever a rational treatment is requested, an intraoperative diagnosis should be performed. In fact these neoplasms--owing to a less intense aggressiveness--present more indications to undergo surgery. In fact the authors report a case of caecum carcinoid characterized by the lack of typical symptoms of the homonymous syndrome. Urgent surgery was performed because of intestinal occlusion; the ileocaecal valve involvement caused the necessity of a large ileocolic resect

Usefulness of pediatric colonoscopes in adult colonoscopy.

Use of small diameter, extraflexible pediatric colonoscopes has proved to be valuable in adult endoscopy practice, not only for passing strictures and stomas but also where either fixation due to diverticular disease or postoperative adhesions, or unavoidably painful looping made passage of adult colonoscopes impossible. In 70 of 78 (92%) of the cases where the adult colonoscope could not be passed through the sigmoid colon by an expert endoscopist, the pediatric colonoscope passed through, often very easily. Fifteen of these patients were considered to have been saved surgery by successful pa

Small bowel obstructions: the case for investigation for occult large bowel carcinoma.

Over the last century, the incidence of adhesive small bowel obstructions has increased as the rate of operative management of abdominal conditions has risen. Concurrently, the rate of colonic cancer has also increased. One of the ways in which colonic cancer may present is as an isolated small bowel obstruction. Three cases of resolving small bowel obstruction secondary to occult carcinoma are presented and a survey of the literature is made. The conclusion is that all patients who present with a small bowel obstruction, which resolves, and who are in the cancer age group should be investigat

Cecal perforation and adrenocortical adenoma in a dog.

Cecal perforation was diagnosed in a dog with a history of acute vomiting. The dog also had an adrenocortical adenoma. Intestinal perforation can be a serious complication of cortico-steroid treatment in the dog, but has not been attributable to hyperadrenocorticism. Fever and an inflammatory CBC were not observed, which could have been secondary to adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. The acute abdominal crisis associated with peritonitis required quick resolution in an attempt to save the dog, but also precluded any further diagnostic procedures for possible hyperadrenocorticism. The sign

A CASE OF CECAL CANCER WITH RETROPERITONEAL ABSCESS.

This paper reports a case of a 65-year old male patient with cecal cancer complicated by retroperitoneal abscess. The patient initially presented with abdominal pain and fever. Through a series of examinations such as laboratory tests, abdominal CT, and colonoscopy, a diagnosis was made. After abscess drainage and subsequent radical right hemicolectomy and abscess debridement, the patient received adjuvant chemotherapy. During the two-year follow-up, there was no recurrence. The paper also discusses the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of colon cancer with retroperit

Robot-Assisted Surgery for Reversed Intestinal Malrotation with Concurrent Cecal Carcinoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Reversed intestinal malrotation is an extremely rare disease, with an incidence of 1 in 250 000. In Japan, application of robotic-assisted colorectal cancer surgery is expected to increase. There are no reports of robot-assisted surgery for cecal cancer with reversed intestinal malrotation. CASE REPORT An 84-year-old Japanese man with epigastric pain and abdominal distention was referred to our hospital's Department of Gastroenterology for thorough examination. Colonoscopy revealed a semicircumferential type 2 tumor in the cecum and ascending colon. Gastrografin contrast study showe

Concurrent appendiceal and umbilical endometriosis: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis affects 3 to 10 percent of women of reproductive age. Most of the time it involves the pelvis; however, sites of endometriosis have been reported almost anywhere in the body. Appendiceal and primary umbilical endometriosis are considered rare loci, making accurate diagnosis elusive. Here we present the case of a 46-year-old woman with concurrent appendiceal and umbilical endometriosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old Greek woman presented with a large mass in the lower abdomen adhering to the surrounding organs. She reported recurrent lower abdominal and pelvic pa

Primary acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma of the cecum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is an uncommon histopathologic variant of SCC, characterized by marked acantholysis, wherein the tumor cells demonstrate defective cohesion to one another in the cancer nest leading to a pseudoglandular or pseudovascular appearance. The most common site of ASCC is the sun-exposed areas of the skin. Sporadic cases of ASCC have also been reported in various mucosal membranes and organs but to our knowledge this is the first case of primary ASCC of the large bowel. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman underwent right hemicolectomy due to

Fast atrial fibrillation and caecal volvulus--a case report and evidence based management.

An 81-year-old Caucasian lady with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) was admitted with palpitations and fast AF. She took bisoprolol and warfarin with subtherapeutic international normalised ratio. Rate control of AF was successful. Around 36 h later, she developed abdominal pain and vomiting. A caecal volvulus was diagnosed on CT. She underwent emergency laparotomy. Intraoperatively, an obstructing tumour was found in the colonic hepatic flexure. It was deemed inoperable. The caecal volvulus was decompressed and an ileo-transverse colon bypass was performed. She made a good recovery and her
