Beta-Lactam Antibiotic Stability in Chicken Meat.

Background/Objectives: Residues of β-lactam antibiotics in foods of animal origin are important for official residue control and public-health risk assessment. Sample storage conditions may affect the measured concentrations of these analytes, whereas cooking may influence consumer exposure. This study evaluated the stability of six β-lactam antibiotics-amoxicillin, ampicillin, phenoxymethylpenicillin, benzylpenicillin, cefazolin, and cefotaxime-and clavulanic acid, a β-lactamase inhibitor, in chicken meat during storage and thermal processing. Methods: Incurred chicken meat samples were obtai

Iron nanoparticles - biodistribution in the chicken embryo model.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) show promise in many biomedical applications, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Iron carbide compounds are good theragnostic contrast agents. Being nanosized might enable passage through a placenta, posing risks to embryonic development. This study investigates the biodistribution of intravenously injected carbon coated iron nanoparticles (ICNP) in chicken embryos. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Carbon coated iron nanoparticles (300 μg or 600 μg) were injected into a blood vessel on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of chicken embryos (stages 23 to

Role of extensification strategies in chicken meat quality.

The latest studies suggest a beneficial influence of husbandry factors, including increased space allowance, access to perches, and roughage, on the welfare of chickens; however, their effects on meat quality are divergent. Two experiments (EXP1 and EXP2) were performed to determine the husbandry factors affecting the meat quality of 42-day-old Ross 308 chickens (n = 180). The examined factors in EXP1 were stocking density (35 kg/m2 vs 41 kg/m2) and enrichment (access to perches), whereas in EXP2, enrichment (perches) and access to roughage (dried lucerne) were examined. The meat quality exami…

Citrus pectins impact the function of chicken macrophages.

The restrictions on excessive use of antimicrobials in the poultry industry have led to the search for alternative strategies including nutritional interventions to enhance gut health with the ultimate aim to prevent gut infections. Pectins as prebiotics have shown beneficial effects on gut health in humans and mice by improving the gut barrier function, altering the gut microbiota, and by modulating the gut immune response. However, little is known about immunomodulatory properties of pectins in chickens. The present in vitro study assessed the effect of three pectins (SPE6, SPE7, SPE8) diffe…

Chlamydia gallinacea in Brazilian backyard chicken farms.

Avian chlamydiosis is a bacterial infectious disease of birds, considered until recently caused only by Chlamydia psittaci, that now includes the newly described species C. buteonis, C. avium, and C. gallinacea, associated with several avian hosts. Since its recognition as a species in 2014 and having chickens as one of its main hosts, C. gallinacea has already been described in backyard poultry on all continents. The present study aimed to survey by molecular techniques the presence and species of Chlamydia spp. in backyard chickens from three states of the southern region of Brazil (Paraná-P…

Avian Sex Determination: A Chicken and Egg Conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Primary sex determination is the developmental process that results in the sexual differentiation of the gonads. Vertebrate sex determination is generally considered to follow the model based on the mammalian system, where a sex-specific master regulatory gene activates one of the two different gene networks that underlie testis and ovary differentiation. SUMMARY: It is now known that, while many of the molecular components of these pathways are conserved across different vertebrates, a wide variety of different trigger factors are utilized to initiate primary sex determination. I

Genomics of Dwarfism in Italian Local Chicken Breeds.

The identification of the dwarf phenotype in chicken is based on body weight, height, and shank length, leaving the differentiation between dwarf and small breeds ambiguous. The aims of the present study were to characterize the sequence variations associated with the dwarf phenotype in three Italian chicken breeds and to investigate the genes associated with their phenotype. Five hundred and forty-one chickens from 23 local breeds (from 20 to 24 animals per breed) were sampled. All animals were genotyped with the 600 K chicken SNP array. Three breeds were described as "dwarf", namely, Merican…

Presumed Spontaneous Astrocytoma in a Domestic Backyard Chicken.

A cerebral tumor was identified in an adult female domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus). On gross examination, the cut surface of the cerebrum revealed a poorly circumscribed, pale tan soft mass within the thalamus and midbrain. On histologic examination, there was an unencapsulated, multilobulated neoplasm composed of spindle cells on a loose fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells had variably distinct cell borders, abundant fibrillar eosinophilic cytoplasm, oval nuclei with finely stippled chromatin, and 1-2 distinct nucleoli. There was moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis with <1 mitoses

Development of ribs and intercostal muscles in the chicken embryo.

In the thorax of higher vertebrates, ribs and intercostal muscles play a decisive role in stability and respiratory movements of the body wall. They are derivatives of the somites, the ribs originating in the sclerotome and the intercostal muscles originating in the myotome. During thorax development, ribs and intercostal muscles extend into the lateral plate mesoderm and eventually contact the sternum during ventral closure. Here, we give a detailed description of the morphogenesis of ribs and thoracic muscles in the chicken embryo (Gallus gallus). Using Alcian blue staining as well as Sox9 a

Altitude-adaption of gut microbiota in Tibetan chicken.

Low oxygen levels and extremely cold weather in high-altitude environments requires more energy intake to maintain body temperature in animals. However, little is known about the characteristics of cecal and ileac microbiota in Tibetan chicken and how the high and low altitude environments affect the gut microbiota communities in Tibetan chicken. In the present study, In the present study, Tibetan chickens (Group HA, 3572 m, 578.5 Pa) and their introduced flatland counterparts (Group LA, 580 m, 894.6 Pa) in the cecum and ileum to identify the possible bacterial species that are helpful for the…

Depression and Parkinson's disease: a Chicken-Egg story.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, however, besides the motor symptoms, such as rest tremor, hypokinesia, postural instability and rigidity, PD patients have also non-motor symptoms, namely neuropsychiatric disorders. Apart from the required motor symptoms, psychopathological symptoms are very common and include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, hallucinations, psychosis, cognitive deterioration and dementia. The underlying pathophysiological process in PD is mainly due to the loss of dopaminergic neural cells and thereby causes the shortage of nigrostriatal dopamine con

The Forensic Pathology of the Sexual Abuse of a Group of Chickens.

Twelve chickens were discovered dead in a barn with a human male suspect observed on closed-circuit television. Post-mortem examination of two of the chickens revealed traumatic injury to the ventral cloaca with fibrinoheterophilic coelomitis associated with coelomic contamination by gut contents. The presence of human DNA was subsequently confirmed in cloacal swabs. This report highlights animal sexual abuse, which may occur in a range of species including chickens, as a significant challenge to animal welfare. Veterinary surgeons should be vigilant for signs of injury to the anogenital regio…

Relevance of antibodies against the Chicken Anaemia Virus.

Chicken Infectious Anaemia (CIA) Virus (CAV) inhibits the function of multiple immune compartments. Mortality due to clinical infection is controlled in broilers by passive immunization derived from vaccinated breeders. Therefore, serological tests are often used in chicks to determine maternally-derived antibodies (MDA). We used a vaccine overdose-induced model of CIA. The model replicated the most common features of the disease. This model was used to determine the role of MDA in the protection of chicks. Hatchlings were tested for anti-CAV titers by ELISA and were sorted into groups based o

Pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer: A case of the chicken or the egg.

Acute pancreatitis (AP), chronic pancreatitis (CP) and pancreatic cancer are three distinct pancreatic diseases with different prognoses and treatment options. However, it may be difficult to differentiate between benign and malignant disease. AP may be a first symptom of pancreatic cancer, particularly in patients between the ages of 56 and 75 with presumed idiopathic AP who had a concomitant diagnosis of new-onset diabetes mellitus or patients who present with CP at diagnosis of AP. In these patients, additional imaging is warranted, preferably by endoscopic ultrasonography. CP may lead to p

Social interaction and the thermogenic response of chicken hatchlings.

The aggregation of two or more individuals of the same species (huddling) is common in mammals and birds, especially in the cold. The physical contact reduces the weight-specific body surface exposed to the environment, thus lowering heat loss and the thermogenic needs. This study investigated the possibility that the mere presence of a conspecific, in absence of physical contact, may by itself influence metabolic rate during cold. The oxygen consumption (Vo2) of pairs of chicken hatchlings was measured when the hatchlings were in isolation (individuals), together in the respirometer but kept

Vasoactivity of magnesium sulfate in chicken ductus arteriosus.

Prenatal treatment with magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) has neuroprotective effects in very preterm infants but its use has been associated with an increased rate of patent ductus arteriosus (DA). MgSO4 is a vasodilator and thus may exert a direct relaxant effect in the DA. We aimed to investigate the vasoactive effects of MgSO4 in the DA using the chicken embryo as experimental model. DA rings from 15-d (E15), 17-d (E17) and 19-d (E19) chicken embryos (total incubation: 21-d) were mounted in a wire myograph for isometric tension recordings. Exposure of DA rings to 21% O2 induced a tonic contraction

The Postembryonic Development of the Immunological Barrier in the Chicken Spleens.

The avian immune system improves with the development of the lymphoid organs. The chickens' spleen serves as the largest peripheral lymphoid organ, but little immunological research has been conducted on that spleen during postembryonic development. We investigated the blood-spleen barrier (BSB) by developing morphological architecture, resistance to the corpuscular antigen, immunocyte distribution, gene expression levels of TLR2/4 and cytokines in the spleens of hatched chickens of differing ages. Results demonstrated that the resistance of exogenous carbon particles of the BSB improved with …
