Evaluation of the sustainability and clinical outcome of Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT) in a child protection center.

This paper examines the sustainability and outcome of Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT) as delivered by practitioners in a community-based child protection program who had received training in the model several years earlier. Formerly described as Abuse-Focused CBT, AF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment (EBT) for child physical abuse and family aggression/conflict that was included in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network's initial EBT dissemination efforts in 2002. Seven practitioners participated in a year-long learning collaborative in AF-CBT and in si

"Instead of just taking my baby, they could've actually given me a chance": Experiences with plans of safe care among birth parents impacted by perinatal substance use.

BACKGROUND: Federal legislation mandates healthcare providers to notify child protective service (CPS) agencies and offer a voluntary care plan called a "plan of safe care" (POSC) for all infants born affected by prenatal substance use. While POSCs aim to provide supportive services for families impacted by substance use, little is known about birth parents' perceptions and experiences. OBJECTIVE: To examine birth parents' perceptions and experiences regarding POSC. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Parents offered a POSC in Philadelphia in the prior year were included. METHODS: This is a qualitati

A national survey of characteristics of child advocacy centers in the United States: Do the flagship models match those in broader practice?

Child Advocacy Centers (CAC) emphasize developing effective cross-agency collaborations between workers involved in serious abuse investigations to foster improvements in agency outcomes, and to minimize distress, confusion and uncertainty for children and families. This study examined the characteristics of CACs, whether models in practice match the predominant model presented in the research literature. Directors of CACs in the United States that were members of the National Children's Alliance (NCA) mailing list (n=361) completed an online survey in 2016. While some core characteristics wer

Correlates of optimal behavior among child welfare-involved children: Perceived school peer connectedness, activity participation, social skills, and peer affiliation.

Understanding the association between children's behaviors and their perceptions regarding the quality of school friendships is useful for intervention strategies focusing on the interpersonal networks of children involved with the child welfare system. Rarely are measures of the strength of peer relationships assessed as a protective factor for maltreated children in the context of understanding their behaviors. This research investigates the link between these youth's expressed relational experiences and nonproblematic behavior. Analyses were conducted on 1,054 children (ages 11-17) from the

Caregiver perceptions about mental health services after child sexual abuse.

The objective of this study was to describe caregiver perceptions about mental health services (MHS) after child sexual abuse (CSA) and to explore factors that affected whether their children linked to services. We conducted semi-structured, in-person interviews with 22 non-offending caregivers of suspected CSA victims<13 years old seen at a child advocacy center in Philadelphia. Purposive sampling was used to recruit caregivers who had (n=12) and had not (n=10) linked their children to MHS. Guided by the Health Belief Model framework, interviews assessed perceptions about: CSA severity, the c

Psychosocial Interventions for Edge of Care Families in the Early Years: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Despite the recognized need for early interventions to prevent maltreatment and family separation in families involved with child protection services (CPS), evidence for children aged 0 to 5 years remains scarce and inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions delivered to these families in reducing the risk of harm, improving parenting quality, and supporting parental functioning. The review included families with children aged 0 to 5 years engaged with CPS and deemed at risk of entering the care system. A systematic

The Effect of Socioeconomic Status and Parental Demographics on Activation of Department of Child and Family Services in Pediatric Burn Injury.

Burns resulting from child maltreatment are tragic causes of significant morbidity and mortality, most commonly affecting children under 3 years of age. More than one third of nonaccidental burns occur in single-parent homes or have parents with history of mental illness, substance abuse, incarceration, or Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) involvement. The authors sought to profile pediatric burn injuries associated with DCFS investigations. They performed a retrospective chart review of pediatric burn patients, admitted between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2014. They analy

Child Protection Investigations in Out-of-Home Care: Perpetrators, Victims, and Contexts.

Keeping children safe in out-of-home care requires an understanding of the contexts under which maltreatment occurs. This study examines how maltreatment investigations differ across four settings (nonrelative foster, informal kinship, formal kinship, and congregate care). I focus on four elements of maltreatment: the perpetrator's role (e.g., out-of-home caregiver and peer), maltreatment type, probability of substantiation, and victim characteristics. I use statewide Wisconsin administrative data in years 2005-2012, which has an analytic sample of over 96,000 placements. Data are analyzed usi

Postrape care services to minors in Kenya: are the services healing or hurting survivors?

Child sexual abuse is a global problem and a growing concern in Sub-Saharan Africa. It constitutes a profound violation of human rights. To address this problem, Kenya has established the Sexual Offences Act. In addition, Kenya has developed national guidelines on the management of sexual violence to grant minors access to health care. However, little is known about the experiences of sexually abused minors when they interact with the health and legal system. Accordingly, this study uses a triangulation of methods in the follow-up of two adolescent girls. Health records were reviewed, interact

Using communities that care for community child maltreatment prevention.

The prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) disorders among children and adolescents is a national priority. One mode of implementing community-wide MEB prevention efforts is through evidence-based community mobilization approaches such as Communities That Care (CTC). This article provides an overview of the CTC framework and discusses the adaptation process of CTC to prevent development of MEBs through preventing child abuse and neglect and bolstering child well-being in children aged 0 to 10. Adaptations include those to the intervention itself as well as those to the evaluatio

Immunization as an entry point for primary health care and beyond healthcare interventions-process and insights from an integrated approach in Lebanon.

Integrated healthcare systems are continually pitched as major contributors towards better distribution of health outcomes and enhanced well-being. Under emergency conditions, integrated healthcare services can guarantee better access to the target population. In recent years, several crises, i.e., economic collapse, the fuel crisis, the Beirut blast, a large refugee population, and the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lebanon have led to a major shift in the health-seeking behavior of the communities, with preventive services being downprioritized despite being available and curative healthcare services

Pregnancy risks and contraceptive use among postpartum mothers in Cameroon: implications for improving the coverage of postpartum family planning services.

BACKGROUND: The health hazards of short inter-birth intervals are severe in Cameroon. One-quarter of inter-birth intervals are less than 24 months and the probability of death before age 5 for children born after a short interval is double that associated with intervals of 36-47 months. We examine the risk of an unintended pregnancy in the 18 months following childbirth in Cameroon, taking into account the protective effects of lactational amenorrhea, delayed resumption of sex as well as contraceptive use. METHODS: Data from 3007 postpartum women in the nationally representative 2018 Cameroon
