Disparities in deworming coverage between children with and without disabilities: insights from the DeWorm3 trial in India.

BACKGROUND: Children with disabilities experience lower school enrolment rates and may be systematically excluded from school-based deworming programmes. The DeWorm3 trial provided an opportunity to evaluate whether community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA) could reduce these disparities by reaching children outside the education system. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the data from the DeWorm3 trial in Tamil Nadu, India. Children aged 5-17 years (n=82 417) who participated in at least one of the six rounds of cMDA were included. Disability was assessed using the UNICEF/Was…

Dentists' experiences treating children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities in India: A descriptive qualitative study.

The study explored dentists' perspectives and experiences providing dental care for children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities in India. A descriptive qualitative research approach was employed, utilising semi-structured interviews with dentists practicing in both urban and rural areas. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded, and thematically analysed. The analysis resulted in four major themes: 1) the need to improve caregivers' awareness regarding dental care, 2) the need to improve caregiver support regarding dental care, 3) complexity in provi

Facing disabilities in children with prenatal alcohol exposure: parenthood and stressors according to families and professionals' narratives.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause neurodevelopmental disorders affecting children's brain function, educational and social skills throughout their lives. International literature highlights the challenge for families of raising an affected child. Beyond their exposure to alcohol, these children face other negative events such as separation from their biological families, the mental health problems of their parents, and so forth, which will have repercussions on their childhood and their future health. METHODS: This research used semi-structured interviews with 107 participants,

A Cross-Sectional Examination of Movement Behaviours and Guideline Adherence Rates Among Preschool-Aged Children With Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Meeting the 24-h movement behaviour guidelines (hereafter 'guidelines') supports healthy growth and development. It is recommended that preschool-aged children engage daily in 180 min of physical activity (PA), 60 min of which are moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), along with less than 1 h of screen time and 10-13 h of sleep for optimal health. However, research on movement behaviours among children with disabilities in the early years is limited. This study aimed to describe movement behaviours and guideline adherence rates among preschool-aged children with disabilities. METHODS: A…

Characteristics of interventions for siblings of children and youth with disabilities and chronic conditions: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Interventions to support siblings of youth with disabilities and chronic conditions have shown promising outcomes, yet there is limited synthesized literature and guidelines to support their design and development. This scoping review aims to synthesize: (1) study, participant, and intervention characteristics of sibling-focused interventions; and (2) intervention outcomes. METHODS: Scoping review guidelines were aligned with Arksey and O'Malley, with considerations from Levac et al. and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Four databases: (1) Ovid MEDLINE, (2) EMBASE, (3) CINAHL, an

A novel dance intervention program for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities: a pilot randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Organized physical activity programs have been shown to provide wide benefits to participants, though there are relatively few studies examining the impact of these programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. This pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility and impact of an undergraduate-led dance intervention program for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. We evaluated the impact of the dance program on motor ability and social skills. METHODS: The study design was a waitlist control clinical trial in which participants were randomiz

Experiences of service and diagnosis among immigrant families of young children with suspected or diagnosed developmental disabilities.

OBJECTIVES: While early diagnosis is fundamental to the development of children with developmental disabilities (DD), limited attention has been paid to immigrant parents' experience of early encounters with systems when they begin seeking supports for their children with DD. This study aimed to contribute to better understanding of immigrant parents' experiences of early encounters with services for families and children with suspected or diagnosed DD. DESIGN: A longitudinal, qualitative approach was adopted. Over 12 months, multiple interviews were conducted with four immigrant families wit

Music therapy improves engagement and initiation for autistic children with mild intellectual disabilities: A randomized controlled study.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy (MT) for children with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disabilities (ID) and explore whether pre-intervention quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) responses can predict outcomes. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 33 children receiving MT and 34 receiving an active control therapy. Participants received either MT or a non-musical social skills intervention for 45 min weekly over 12 weeks. Primary outcomes were measured using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS-2), along with the p

Mental health impact of autism on families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities of genetic origin.

BACKGROUND: Many children with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) have associated autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as well as an increased risk of mental health difficulties. In a cohort with IDD of genetic aetiology, we tested the hypothesis that excess risk attached to those with ASD + IDD, in terms of both children's mental health and parental psychological distress. METHODS: Participants with a copy number variant or single nucleotide variant (5-19 years) were recruited via UK National Health Service. 1904 caregivers competed an online assessment of child mental health and

Key developmental milestones helped to identify children with special educational needs and disabilities at an early stage.

AIM: Responding to developmental delay promptly is important, as it helps children to reach their full potential. This study investigated how developmental milestones predicted primary school children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at an early stage. METHODS: We obtained data about 36 milestones between 12 and 45 months using the Dutch Development Instrument. Development, primary school classification and background characteristics were collected from the Dutch Preventive Child Healthcare system in Utrecht from 2008 to 2016. We investigated SEND classifications and the

Remote Learning Experience for Children With Developmental Disabilities During COVID-19 Pandemic in an Ethnically Diverse Community.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, K-12 education in New York City quickly transitioned to remote learning. We performed a structured interview with 50 consecutive families of children with developmental disabilities about their experience with remote learning 2 months after COVID-19 lockdown. We observed that setting up the remote learning system was challenging for families who were born outside of the United States, spoke limited English, or had a lower level of education. Though some special education supports were in place, remote learning for children with developmental disabilities led to

Relationship between the corpus callosum and neurocognitive disabilities in children with NF-1: diffusion tensor imaging features.

PURPOSE: Mild neurocognitive disabilities are commonly observed in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Enlargement of the corpus callosum (CC) is one of the findings in NF-1, but the pathogenesis has not yet been clarified. In this study, we investigated whether diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) features of CC differed between children with NF-1 and healthy control subjects, and we tried to evaluate the association between the microstructural integrity of CC and neurocognitive disabilities, based on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) values. Neuropsychological Assessment of Children With Reading Disabilities From 8 to 10 Years Old: An Exploratory Portuguese Study.

Reading disabilities are one of the most significant causes of school failure and may result from different causes and cognitive processes. A comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests was applied to a control group of 102 children (46 girls, 56 boys) with no history of learning disabilities and 32 children (13 girls, 19 boys) with poor reading achievement (PRA) to characterize their cognitive profile. A principal component analysis of the cognitive measures was undertaken to identify cognitive domains. Age-adjusted normative data were computed from controls for verbal and visuospatial

Support for AAC use in preschool, and growth in language skills, for young children with developmental disabilities.

Little is known about how AAC use in preschool may impact language development for children with complex communication needs (e.g., children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities). We developed two surveys (a) to describe children's use of AAC in preschool classrooms, as well as the use of prompts and question asking, and augmented input by their communication partners; and (b) to describe teachers' experience, training, and perceived support in providing AAC. We then examined the relationship between children's experience of AAC, including the use of
