Crickets evade bats via olfaction beyond acoustic cues.

The evolutionary arms race between insectivorous bats and their insect prey is a classic paradigm of acoustic predation and evasion, with insects having evolved sophisticated auditory countermeasures. Both bats and insects also rely heavily on olfaction for key behaviors, such as social communication. Moreover, predator-derived odors are well established as risk cues in many other predator-prey systems. However, whether olfaction plays a role in the bat-insect arms race remains unknown. Here, we unveil a previously unknown olfactory dimension to this interaction. We demonstrated that the body

BioNet-A: Ultrasonic echo representation network for target discrimination using active SONAR.

Ultrasonic echoes provide critical cues for object perception, yet their millisecond duration and frequency-specific structure violate assumptions of conventional spectrogram-based convolutional models. Existing biomimetic front-end systems, including auditory spectrograms, cortical wavelets, and the biomimetic BioNet, either under-utilize model capacity on brief echoes or impose frequency shift-invariance suited to vocalizations but detrimental for echo discrimination. This study introduces BioNet5-A, a biomimetic encoder optimized for ultrasonic echoes. BioNet5-A is derived from an autoencod

Validating Wing Biopsies for Blood-Borne Pathogen Characterization in Bats.

Wildlife surveillance is critical for tracking disease emergence, characterizing pathogen diversity, and assessing spillover risks. Blood-borne pathogens are of particular interest for such efforts due to their global distribution, broad host taxa, and zoonotic potential. Despite the need to monitor blood-borne pathogens, blood collection is costly for biologists and sampled wildlife (i.e., time-consuming and stressful), hindering our ability to expand surveillance efforts. Using vascular tissues to detect infections can minimize sampling effort and stress on wildlife, but it is unclear how pa

Allometric scales underlying animal flight: a mechanics-based approach.

Over the years, numerous studies have attempted to deduce scaling laws for the parameters associated with animal flight. These have been primarily empirical and have, moreover, tended to focus on one of the three volant groups, i.e. birds, bats or insects, with few attempts to seek common scaling behaviours. On the premise that there are underlying fundamental scales enabling animal flight regardless of species, a unified approach based on the mechanics of flight is developed. It is shown that the primary physical phenomena can be described in terms of four morphological parameters, the mass s

Assessment of Quantitative Genetic Distances Supports the Separation of H17N10 and H18N11 Subtypes of Influenza A Virus into a Distinct Species.

The taxonomic status of the H17N10 and H18N11 influenza A viruses isolated from bats remains unclear due to the absence of quantitative classification criteria at this taxonomic level. A total of 3328 representative IAV genomes, encompassing all eight protein-coding segments, were analysed. Various genetic distance-based metrics were assessed at the pairwise level, including intra- and intergroup nucleotide distances, dN/dS ratios, and transition/transversion ratios, to facilitate the differentiation of the Alphainfluenzavirus genus into distinct taxa. Pairwise distances for seven of the eight

A potential histoplasmosis pathogenesis mechanism mediated by a lectin of Histoplasma capsulatum with affinity to β-galactose, favoring intravascular hemagglutination.

Ascomycetes belonging to the Histoplasma capsulatum species complex can cause severe manifestations in patients with disseminated histoplasmosis. Based on data from hemagglutination assays and histopathological findings related to H. capsulatum, we investigated their potential role in the disseminated intravascular hemagglutination events. Human erythrocyte hemagglutination was produced with H. capsulatum yeasts of 10 isolates/strains, belonging to different phylogenetic species and lineages. Hemagglutination assays were inhibited by pre-incubating their yeasts with β-galactose, ratifying prev

Clinical, Molecular, and Zoonotic Perspectives on Human Cases of Cryptosporidium sp. OTUi.

We report a case of Cryptosporidium sp. OTUi identified in a tourist from Denmark who recently traveled to Indonesia. Previous detections include a traveler from Australia returning from Bali, a bat from the Philippines, and a patient from Australia. On the basis of those findings, we believe zoonotic transmission is plausible.

Genetic Identification of Brazilian Mammalian Hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi: Improving Blood Meal Source Discrimination in Vector-Borne Transmission.

The detection of food sources of blood-sucking vectors is essential for a better understanding of the hosts, reservoirs, and other fauna that participate in the transmission web of hemoparasites. The molecular identification of triatomine blood meal sources (BMSs) has been shown to be highly sensitive and taxonomically specific when compared to the immunological method. The application of molecular cloning makes it possible to identify multiple BMS species and/or different individuals/haplotypes of the same vertebrate species in a single triatomine specimen. In Brazil, the molecular detection

Modeling natural coinfection in a bat reservoir shows modulation of Marburg virus shedding and spillover potential.

The Egyptian rousette bat (ERB) is a natural reservoir for Marburg virus (MARV; family Filoviridae), a putative reservoir for Sosuga virus (SOSV; family Paramyxoviridae), and a vertebrate reservoir for Kasokero virus (KASV; family Orthonairoviridae); however, the effect of naturally occurring coinfection by those viruses on MARV shedding and spillover potential is unknown. To answer this question, we experimentally infected one cohort of captive-bred ERBs with SOSV+MARV (n=12 bats) or MARV only (n=12 bats) and a second cohort with KASV+MARV (n=12 bats) or MARV only (n=12 bats), and then collec

Distribution of Desmodus rotundus and Its Implications for Rabies in Mexico.

Rabies is one of the zoonoses with the most significant impact on domestic herbivores, representing a mortality of 100,000 individuals and an economic loss of US$97 million per year in Latin America. The common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) is the primary reservoir for livestock rabies and is naturally distributed in Latin America. The concern arises from the possibility that climate change could facilitate the species' arrival to the southern USA. In this study, we used ecological niche modeling to estimate the distribution of D. rotundus in the present time and under future climate change

Phylogeography of rabies virus transmitted by the hematophagous bat Desmodus rotundus in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Rabies is a zoonosis primarily transmitted through bites from infected animals. The rabies virus (RABV) remains a significant public health concern in some countries and causes substantial economic losses in livestock farming. In Brazil, around 45,000 cattle die annually due to rabies, resulting in an estimated economic impact of up to 15 million dollars. Phylogeographic analysis is a valuable tool for tracking viral dispersion over time and space and is commonly used to monitor RABV's molecular epidemiology. This study aimed to characterize the dispersion of RABV isolated from cattle infected

Diversity of Bartonella spp. in bat-associated Streblidae flies from Brazil.

Streblide flies are obligatory ectoparasites with a worldwide distribution, specialized in exclusively parasitizing bats, which serve as important reservoirs of Bartonella spp. These flies are considered potential vectors of emerging Bartonella species. Despite the high diversity of both bats and streblid flies in Brazil, little is known about the occurrence and genetic diversity of Bartonella spp. in these hosts, particularly in cave environments. This study investigated the occurrence and genetic diversity of Bartonella spp. in streblid flies associated with bats from humid forest remnants i

[Marburg virus disease in travellers].

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a dreadful but exceptional disease. Formerly mainly identified in Uganda, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has recently appeared in the Republic of Guinea, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania, adding West Africa to the affected regions. Humans become infected through exposure to bats Roussettus aegyptiacus or during unprotected care of infected people. Five cases are linked to travellers, the last one dates to 2008 and involved a visit to caves colonized by bats. At present, there is no specific treatment or vaccine. Despite its rarity, adventuro

Identification of a novel adenovirus in liver tissue sample of the Great Himalayan leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros armiger).

Bats are important reservoirs for many zoonotic viruses. To explore and monitor potential novel viruses carried by bats, 21 liver samples of bats (Hipposideros armiger) were collected from Yunnan Province in southern China. Only one (4.8%) of all models was detected with adenovirus. The whole genome strain obtained by the viral metagenomics method combined with PCR was temporarily named YN01. The complete genome of YN01 was 37,676 bp, with a G + C content of 55.20% and 28 open reading frames. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the strain YN01 can be classified as genus Mastadenovirus and was

Flight performance and wing morphology in the bat Carollia perspicillata: biophysical models and energetics.

Studies on functional performance are important to understand the processes responsible for the evolution of diversity. Morphological trait variation within species influences the energetic cost of locomotion and impacts life history traits, with ecological and evolutionary consequences. This study examined wing morphology correlates of flight performance measured by energetic expenditure in the Seba's short-tailed bat, Carollia perspicillata. In the flight experiments, nature caught bats (59 females, 57 males) were allowed to fly for 3 min in a room. After each flight, thermographic images we

Metagenomics-enabled reverse-genetics assembly and characterization of myotis bat morbillivirus.

Morbilliviruses are among the most contagious viral pathogens of mammals. Although previous metagenomic surveys have identified morbillivirus sequences in bats, full-length morbilliviruses from bats are limited. Here we characterize the myotis bat morbillivirus (MBaMV) from a bat surveillance programme in Brazil, whose full genome was recently published. We demonstrate that the fusion and receptor binding protein of MBaMV utilize bat CD150 and not human CD150, as an entry receptor in a mammalian cell line. Using reverse genetics, we produced a clone of MBaMV that infected Vero cells expressing

Pathogenesis of Kasokero virus in experimentally infected Egyptian rousette bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus).

Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs; Rousettus aegyptiacus; family Pteropodidae) are associated with a growing number of bunyaviruses of public health importance, including Kasokero virus (KASV), which was first identified as a zoonosis in Uganda in 1977. In this study, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from a previous experiment in which KASV infection was confirmed in 18 experimentally infected ERBs were used for an in-depth analysis using histopathology, in situ hybridization (ISH) for detection of viral RNA, immunohistochemistry (IHC) to assess the mononuclear phagocyte system response, an

Marburg and Ebola Virus Infections Elicit a Complex, Muted Inflammatory State in Bats.

The Marburg and Ebola filoviruses cause a severe, often fatal, disease in humans and nonhuman primates but have only subclinical effects in bats, including Egyptian rousettes, which are a natural reservoir of Marburg virus. A fundamental question is why these viruses are highly pathogenic in humans but fail to cause disease in bats. To address this question, we infected one cohort of Egyptian rousette bats with Marburg virus and another cohort with Ebola virus and harvested multiple tissues for mRNA expression analysis. While virus transcripts were found primarily in the liver, principal compo

Notifications of suspected rabies exposure increased in Finland: 26 years of one health surveillance, 1995-2020.

BACKGROUND: Finland is a rabies virus-free country since 1991. Notification of suspected cases of rabies exposures, leading to post-exposure prophylaxis, is mandatory. We characterised suspected cases of rabies exposure, analysed animal surveillance data and calculated costs for vaccine and immunoglobulin and treatment to estimate the financial burden of rabies control in Finland. METHODS: The incidence rate ratios of suspected cases of rabies exposure were calculated from Finnish Infectious Disease Registry and Statistics Finland data. Animal surveillance data were obtained from the Finnish

Reconstruction of Flight Parameters of a Bat for Flapping Robots.

The flight of bats is comparatively less documented and understood than birds and insects and may provide novel inspiration for the design of flapping flight robots. This study captured the natural flight of short-nosed fruit bats (Cynopterus sphinx) by an optical motion capture system, "OptiTrack", with pasted markers on the wings and body to reconstruct the flight parameters. Due to the self-occlusion at some moments, points on the membrane wings cannot be captured by any cameras. To draw a smooth trajectory, it is desired to reconstruct all missing data. Therefore, an algorithm is proposed
