Epidemiology of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in children with acute respiratory tract infections, Chengdu, 2022-2023.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae is a common pathogen involved in acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) in children. METHODS: Children with ARTIs attending the West China Second Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2022 to December 2023 were selected. IgM antibodies against Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) were detected using a chemiluminescence immunoassay. Demographic and temporal differences in IgM positivity were compared between 2022 and 2023. RESULTS: Over the two-year period, 20,689 children were included. In 2022, under stringent COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical interventi

Sexually transmitted infections (Chlamydia trachomatis, genital HSV, and HPV) and female fertility: A scoping review.

More than one million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide. They are commonly caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), herpes simplex virus (HSV), or human papillomavirus (HPV) and are suggested to contribute to female infertility. This scoping review aims to map and summarize existing literature on the association between a pre-pregnancy infection with CT, genital HSV, or HPV and female fertility. We searched two databases (PubMed, Embase) to identify published literature on the association between CT, genital HSV, or HPV infection and female fertility. We incl

Analysis of Risk Factors for Severe Pneumonia Progression in Chlamydia psittaci Infections: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Psittacosis pneumonia, caused by Chlamydia psittaci, is a zoonotic infection with a severe-case mortality rate of 15-20%. This study aimed to identify risk factors for severe pneumonia and evaluate the discriminative performance of corresponding predictive models. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 51 patients with metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS)-confirmed psittacosis pneumonia were classified into severe (n=20) and non-severe (n=31) groups. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, and imaging features were collected. Variable

A Nationwide Observational Study of Chlamydia trachomatis Infections in Denmark during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The aim of this study was to determine whether COVID-19 restrictions had an impact on Chlamydia trachomatis infections compared with 2018 and 2019. A retrospective nationwide observational study was performed using monthly incidences of laboratory-confirmed chlamydia cases and number of tests, obtained from Danish national surveillance data. Testing rates and positivity rates were compared using Poisson and logistic regression. The first Danish COVID-19 lockdown (12 March to 14 April 2020) resulted in a reduction in the number of chlamydia tests performed (rate ratio 0.72, 95% confidence inter

Association between Human Papillomavirus and Chlamydia trachomatis genital infections in male partners of infertile couples.

The prevalence of HPV infection and its relationship with other sexually transmitted infections was analyzed in a cohort of 117 male partners of infertile couples from Cordoba, Argentina. Semen samples and urethral swabs were obtained and the infection with HPV, Chlamydia trachomatis, HSV1, HSV2, Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum was analyzed. A prevalence of HPV infection of 27.4% was found. Interestingly, infections by exclusively low risk HPV genotypes or high/intermediate risk HPV genotypes were present in 64.5% and 22.6% of cases, respectively. Low risk-HPV6 was the most frequ

Structure-based drug target prioritisation and rational drug design for targeting Chlamydia trachomatis eye infections.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C.t) is a major causative of infectious blindness in world. It is a real challenge to combat Chlamydial infection as it is an intracellular pathogen. Hence, it is essential to determine the most potential targets of C.t in order to inhibit or suppress its virulence during its infectious phase. Thus, in this study, the highly expressed-cum-most essential genes reported through our earlier study were reprioritized by structure-based comparative binding site analysis with host proteome. Therefore, computational approaches involving molecular modelling, large-scale binding s

Monitoring therapy success of urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis infections in women: A prospective observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The use of a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) as a test of cure after treatment is subject to discussion, as the presence of C. trachomatis nucleic acids after treatment may be prolonged and intermittent without presence of infectious bacteria. We used cell culture to assess if a positive RNA- or DNA-based NAAT after treatment indicates the presence of viable C. trachomatis. METHODS: We included women with asymptomatic urogenital C. trachomatis infection visiting the Amsterdam STI clinic from September 2015 through June 2016. Endocervical swabs were collected prior to trea

High Frequency of Chlamydia trachomatis Mixed Infections Detected by Microarray Assay in South American Samples.

Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Based on sequence variation in the ompA gene encoding the major outer membrane protein, the genotyping scheme distinguishes 17 recognized genotypes, i.e. A, B, Ba, C, D, Da, E, F, G, H, I, Ia, J, K, L1, L2, and L3. Genotyping is an important tool for epidemiological tracking of C. trachomatis infections, including the revelation of transmission pathways and association with tissue tropism and pathogenicity. Moreover, genotyping can be useful for clinicians to establish the correct treatment when LGV stra

Maternal Chlamydia trachomatis infections and preterm birth:the impact of early detection and eradication during pregnancy.

The risks for preterm birth are heterogeneous and there remains much to elucidate regarding etiology of this adverse perinatal outcome. Antenatal infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, a highly prevalent sexually-transmitted infection, may convey a higher risk of preterm birth. Early detection and eradication of this sexually-transmitted infection without recurrent/persistent infection during pregnancy may serve as an intervention that reduces the risk of preterm birth. The objective of this study was to characterize the association between early antenatal detection and eradication of maternal

Order of HPV/Chlamydia infections and cervical high-grade precancer risk: a case-cohort study.

Interactions of carcinogenic human papillomaviruses (most notably HPV types 16/18/31/33/45), and HPV6 or Chlamydia trachomatis are not well understood. We have used seroconversions to study effects the order of these infections has on the risk of high-grade cervical precancer. In a cohort of 94,349 Finnish women with paired sera from consecutive pregnancies within an average of 2.4 years, 490 were diagnosed with cervical CIN3/AIS. Serum antibodies to HPV6/16/18/31/33/45 and C. trachomatis were measured in paired sera of the cases and a subcohort of 2,796 women with a minimum of two pregnancies

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections and the risk of adverse obstetric outcomes: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between prior chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections and adverse obstetric outcomes. METHODS: Records of women resident in New South Wales, Australia with a singleton first birth during 1999-2008 were linked to chlamydia and gonorrhoea notifications using probabilistic linkage. Obstetric outcomes and potential confounders were ascertained from the birth record. Logistic regression, adjusted for potential confounders was used to estimate the association between a disease notification prior to the birth and adverse birth outcomes: spontaneous preterm birth (S

Cross-sectional study of pharyngeal and genital chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections in emergency department patients.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) are the most commonly reported diseases in the USA, with increasing concern regarding cephalosporin-resistant GC strains and growing discussion of routine male screening and analysing extragenital sites. Hospital emergency departments (EDs) may be appropriate screening venues, and our objective was to identify the extent of genital and oropharyngeal CT/GC infection in ED patients. METHODS: From June 2012 to March 2013, ED patients aged 15-34 were asked to provide a urine sample and oropharyngeal swab for CT/GC analysis and

Hospital-diagnosed late sequelae after female Chlamydia trachomatis infections in 1990-2006 in Turku, Finland.

BACKGROUND: Rather little is known about the late sequelae of previously detected female Chlamydia infections. METHODS: The late sequelae of previous female Chlamydia infections detected during a 15-year period in a south-western Finnish university hospital were surveyed. Hospital records of women with positive laboratory diagnoses of Chlamydia trachomatis as a sign of genital infection were collected from the years 1990-2006 and subsequently linked to known or suspected in-hospital-treated late Chlamydia complications. RESULTS: The annual number of late complications has increased in propor…

The molecular epidemiology of ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infections in Western Australia: implications for trachoma control.

We studied the serovar distribution of Chlamydia trachomatis in patients with clinical eye disease in Western Australia. Most disease occurred in indigenous communities and was caused by trachoma serovars Ba and C. Serovar Ba was genetically homogeneous throughout Western Australia and identical to strains previously described in indigenous communities in Northern Territory. This finding probably results from movement of these populations, and suggests that a widely coordinated, rather than local or regional, approach is needed to control trachoma in mobile populations. Serovar C strains withi

Comparison of multiple genital tract infections with Chlamydia trachomatis in different strains of female mice.

We have previously shown that female outbred CF-1 mice are susceptible to prolonged genital tract infection with the oculogenital serovars (D-K) of Chlamydia trachomatis, and that partial homotypic and heterotypic protection against reinfection is induced. To understand the possible role of inherent T-helper 1 (Th1)/Th2 polarity bias on both the course of infection and the level of acquired immunity induced by infection, 2 immunologically different and well-characterized inbred strains of mice, BALB/c and C57BL/6, were studied in this model. Groups of mice were inoculated intravaginally with C
