Correlates of consistent condom use among recently initiated and traditionally circumcised men in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Consistent use of condoms is the most effective method of preventing STIs including HIV. However, recent evidence suggests that limited knowledge about HIV prevention benefits from male circumcision leads to inconsistent condom use among traditionally circumcised men. The aim of this paper is to report on the prevalence of consistent condom use and identify its psychosocial correlates to inform future HIV prevention strategies among traditionally circumcised men in rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using interviewer administ

Ablatio penis: normal male infant sex-reassigned as a girl.

Forty-five cases of genetic males were assigned and habilitated as females, 43 because of a congenitally defective penis (micropenis with or without hypospadias), and two because of infantile ablatio penis. One of the latter has an identical twin brother as a control. Now 9 years old, she has differentiated a female gender identity in marked contrast to the male gender identity of her brother. Some of the other patients are now adolescent or adult in age. They demonstrate that the twin can expect to be feminine in erotic expression and sexual life. Maintained on estrogen therapy, she will have

Female genital mutilation/cutting experiences and attitudes among women from countries with high prevalence of FGM/C living in the United States: findings from the women's health needs study.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a health and human rights concern for women and girls globally, and illegal to perform in the United States (US). FGM/C is associated with negative immediate and long-term health consequences such as pain, infections, and obstetric complications. Recent US estimates of the numbers of women and girls impacted by FGM/C are unknown but increasing immigration to the US from countries where FGM/C is prevalent suggests an increased population. We describe the health characteristics, experiences, and attitudes about FGM/C among Women's Health N

ASRHR in Ethiopia: reviewing progress over the last 20 years and looking ahead to the next 10 years.

Over the last two decades, improvements in Ethiopia's socio-economic context, the prioritization of health and development in the national agenda, and ambitious national health and development policies and programmes have contributed to improvements in the living standards and well-being of the population as a whole including adolescents. Improvements have occurred in a number of health outcomes, for example reduction in levels of harmful practices i.e., in child marriage and female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), reduction in adolescent childbearing, increase in positive health behaviours

[Anatomic, functional and identity results after clitoris transposition].

OBJECTIVES: Every year 3 millions of young women had undergone female genital mutilation. The psychological, identical and sexual consequences, as well as the treatment were described only recently. After a sociodemographic and cultural reminder, we analyze the anatomical, psychological, identital, and functional results of the reconstructive surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective monocentric study. Thirty women were included in our series. All the patients operated according to the technique of Pierre Foldes were contacted again, to estimate their motivations for this su

Obstetric and neonatal outcomes for women with reversed and non-reversed type III female genital mutilation.

OBJECTIVE: To record and compare obstetric and neonatal complication rates in women with reversed and non-reversed type III female genital mutilation (FGM). METHODS: A retrospective observational study comparing cesarean delivery rates and neonatal outcomes of primiparous and multiparous women who had or had not undergone reversal of FGM III. RESULTS: Of the 250 women, 230 (92%) had an FGM reversal. Of these, 50 (21.7%) were primiparous (cesarean delivery rate 17/50; 34%) and 180 (78.3%) were multiparous (cesarean delivery rate 28/180; 15.6%). Of the 20 women who had not had an FGM reversal,

The relevance of castration and circumcision to the origins of psychoanalysis: 1. The medical context.

In this paper the author outlines and discusses the origins and the decline of castration and circumcision as a cure for the nervous and psychic disturbances in women and little girls between 1875 and 1905. The author argues that the opposition to this medical practice affected the conception of hysteria, promoting a distinction between sexuality and the genital organs, and the emergence of an enlarged notion of sexuality, during the period from Freud's medical education to the publication of the Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. The hypothesis is put forward that Freud came directly in

Can Low Dose Tadalafil Improve the Sexual Functions in Women with Genital Mutilation?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Female genital mutilation (FGM) is associated with female sexual dysfunction (FSD) through anatomical disruption and impaired genital vascular function. Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibition may enhance genital perfusion via nitric oxide-mediated pathways. We hypothesized that tadalafil improves sexual function and clitoral vascular parameters in women with FGM-related FSD. METHODS: In this randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 66 women with FGM-related FSD were randomized; 52 completed follow-up and were included in a modified intention-to-treat analysis (

Six aspects of female genital mutilation education (SAFE) model: findings from a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Recent figures show that over 200 million women and girls, globally, live with the consequences of female genital mutilation (FGM). Complex debilitating physical, psychological and social problems result from the practice. Health education interventions have proven to be essential in both preventing the practice and informing support of survivors. In this study, we aimed to explore factors that affect the effectiveness of health education interventions. DESIGN: A generic qualitative approach was applied using semistructured individual and focus group interviews with women and men

Sexual norms and the intention to use healthcare services related to female genital cutting: A qualitative study among Somali and Sudanese women in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Female Genital Cutting (FGC) is a traditionally meaningful practice in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It is associated with a high risk of long-term physical and psychosexual health problems. Girls and women with FGC-related health problems need specialized healthcare services such as psychosexual counseling, deinfibulation, and clitoral reconstruction. Moreover, the need for psychosexual counseling increases in countries of immigration where FGC is not accepted and possibly stigmatized. In these countries, the practice loses its cultural meaning and girls and women with FGC ar

Injured bodies, damaged lives: experiences and narratives of Kenyan women with obstetric fistula and Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.

BACKGROUND: It is well acknowledged that Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C/C) leads to medical, psychological and sociocultural sequels. Over 200 million cases of FGM/C exist globally, and in Kenya alone, a total of 12,418,000 (28%) of women have undergone FGM/C, making the practice not only a significant national, but also a global health catastrophe. FGM/C is rooted in patriarchal and traditional cultures as a communal experience signifying a transition from girlhood to womanhood. The conversations surrounding FGM/C have been complicated by the involvement of women themselves in perpe
