Myelodysplastic syndrome is a neoplastic clonal stem cell disorder characterized clinically by bone marrow failure and a tendency to progress to acute myelogenous leukemia. Dysplasia is the pathologic hallmark. The French-American-British classification served as the gold standard for more than two decades. Under the auspice of the World Health Organization, more than 100 hematopathologists in a 3-year cumulative effort issued the new World Health Organization classification, which recognizes multilineage dysplasia. Refractory anemia with excess blasts is divided into two groups. Chronic myelo…

BACKGROUND: To assess an additional prognostic value of Goseki histological classification to TNM staging system in adenocarcinoma of the cardia.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients curatively resected for advanced (T2, T3 and T4) cardia cancer at the I Division of General Surgery, University of Verona were classified in four different grades according to Goseki. Survival curves were estimated with Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed by Cox regression model. c2 test was used to compare Goseki to Lauren classification and grading. After discharge …

e have assessed the reliability of four classification systems for club foot. Four observers evaluated nine children (18 feet) at different stages in the first six months of life, a total of 180 examinations. Each observer independently assessed all feet according to the classification systems described by Catterall, Diméglio et al, Harrold and Walker, and Ponseti and Smoley. The variation between observers was assessed using the kappa test which for no more agreement than chance has a value of 0, and for complete agreement between observers a value of 1. The kappa values varied between 0.14 a…

A number of distinct clinical syndromes have been described that are associated with focal degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes and have a non-Alzheimer pathology. The nosological status of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) has been a matter of controversy, in view of the diversity of clinical manifestations and distribution and nature of histopathological change. This paper describes the major clinical syndromes of frontotemporal dementia, progressive aphasia, and semantic dementia; it discusses their underlying pathologies and considers their molecular status. Common histopa

Segmental vitiligo usually has an onset early in life and spreads rapidly within the affected area. Among 1,300 patients with vitiligo, 191 patients with segmental vitiligo involving the face were evaluated. In this study, the distribution of segmental vitiligo on the face could be classified into 5 patterns which have distinctive features. This classification of facial segmental vitiligo can provide some indication of the future distribution of early lesions if they have begun to spread.

Epilepsies are a diverse group of disorders with both shared and distinct features. Classification allows a coherent, systematic approach and serves as a 'universal language' between neurologists all over the world. There are two systems of classifications of epilepsies in use today. The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Classification of Epileptic Seizures 1981 divides seizures into 3 morphologic types--generalised, partial and unclassifiable, with subtypes of each. This system has the advantage that seizures can be classified relatively easily and choice of antiepileptic is dictat…

A retrospective blind study was carried out on 2640 patients of leprosy to correlate the histopathological and clinical classification of leprosy using the criteria laid down by Ridley and Jopling. There was complete agreement between histopathological and clinical classification in 81.8% of the cases, with one step deviation in 5.1% of the cases. Histopathological diagnosis of indeterminate leprosy in high percentage (15.9%) as against 3.3% of indeterminate leprosy clinically in our series was an interesting feature. Type-wise correlation between histopathological with clinical classification…

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine whether there was empirical support for the diagnostic thresholds of DSM-IV bulimia nervosa (BN) and whether an empirically derived typology resembled the diagnostic categories of DSM-IV.
METHODS: Detailed information about bulimic behaviours were assessed via personal interview in a population-based sample of 1897 Caucasian female twins. We assessed the lifetime prevalence of the component bulimic behaviours and DSM-IV and DSM-III-R BN. Latent class analysis of nine separate bulimic symptoms was used to develop an empirical typology of bulimic behaviour.

Instability of the shoulder can be classified as uni- or multidirectional with or without general hyperlaxity. Instability of a shoulder without hyperlaxity is often caused by a single traumatic event for the unidirectional instability and by two or several different events for the rarer multidirectional instability. The diagnosis of unidirectional instability is made with a positive apprehension test. For multidirectional instabilities, the anterior and posterior apprehension tests are positive. The treatment consists of surgical repair of the labrum-capsule complex for both the uni- and the

An erythrocytosis describes an increased peripheral blood packed cell volume (PCV) and is deemed to be absolute or apparent depending on whether or not the measured red cell mass (RCM) is above the reference range. This reference range must be related to the individual's height and weight to avoid erroneous interpretations using ml/kg total body weight expressions in obesity. Absolute erythrocytoses are divided into primary, where the erythropoietic compartment is intrinsically abnormal, secondary, where the erythropoietic compartment is normal but is responding to external pathological events

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common clinical problem, particularly in the elderly and in patients with organic heart disease. AF generally is classified into paroxysmal and chronic forms. Chronic AF can be the end result of paroxysmal AF in about 30% of patients. Paroxysmal AF can be defined as attacks of arrhythmia lasting < 7 days separated by prolonged periods of sinus rhythm. Chronic AF is AF established for > 7 days. Therefore, the differentiation of paroxysmal from chronic or established AF is based on the history of recurrent episodes and the duration of the current episode of AF. The

There were 2040 patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases in the investigation including clinical, physiological, X-ray methods of research, contrast arthrotomography, computer arthrotomography and magnetic resonance tomography. The changes of structure in different lesions were estimated. The result of received data was elaboration of classification of TMJ internal derangements with estimation of clinical forms in according with structural changes and characteristics of syndromes.

The most commonly used classifications of Perthes disease are presented., their pros and cons discussed. The newest classification of Perthes disease proposed by Herring et al in 1992 is included. The ease of interpretation of the a-p hip radiographs, high reproducibility of the method and strict correlation between lateral pillar height and the final result of treatment make Herring's classification very useful. Its wide utilization may allow for uniform treatment of Perthes disease.
