INTRODUCTION: Climate change and anthropogenic activities have jointly reshaped vegetation growth processes and water-consumption patterns in arid regions, complicating the relationship between vegetation restoration and water-resource constraints. Existing studies have mainly focused on individual ecological processes. A systematic understanding of how vegetation growth is coupled with ecological water demand (EWD), and of the mechanisms driving this relationship, remains limited.
METHODS: Xinjiang was selected as a representative arid region, and multi-source datasets from 2000 to 2024 were

In response to address the climate crisis, there has been a growing focus on substituting conventional refinery-derived products with those derived from biorefineries. The utilization of lipids as primary materials or intermediates for the synthesis of chemicals and fuels, which are integral to the existing chemical and petrochemical industries, is a key step in this transition. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the production of sustainable chemicals (acids and alcohols), biopolymers, and fuels (including gasoline, kerosene, biodiesel, and heavy fuel oil) from lipids derived fr

We describe the process of adapting a community-level, evidence-based behavioral intervention (EBI), Community PROMISE, for HIV-positive African American men who have sex with men (AAMSM). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Map of the Adaptation Process (MAP) guided the adaptation process for this new target population by two community-based organizations (CBOs) working in partnership with two research organizations. We describe five steps of the MAP, assessment, selection, preparation, pilot, and implementation, and the use of qualitative interviews, field observations, and

BACKGROUND: The southern cattle fever tick (SCFT), Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, remains endemic in Puerto Rico. Systematic treatment programmes greatly reduced and even eradicated temporarily this tick from the island. However, a systemic treatment programme that includes integrated management practices for livestock against SCFT remains to be established in the island. We describe a spatially-explicit, individual-based model that simulates climate-livestock-SCFT-landscape interactions. This model was developed as an investigative tool to aid in a research project on integrated managem

Animal agriculture is one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. Whole-food plant-based diets (WFPBDs) (defined as diets consisting of predominantly plants with minimal ultra-processed foods) can help to mitigate many of the challenges facing our planet and improve the health of patients with rheumatic diseases. Here, we will review how animal agriculture impacts climate change and our environment and how environmental contaminants in food may be potentially impacting health, including rheumatic disease. We will also discuss the evidence

The certification of foreign-trained technologists is a very sensitive issue, and the CSLT must proceed with caution in making changes to the system. The policy cannot afford to be too lenient, lest in this litigation-conscious climate an incident were to occur that could undermine the credibility of the certification process. On the other hand, it must not be protectionist and discriminatory. If the labour market does become undersupplied with medical technologists, employers in non-regulated provinces may choose to replace their ranks with non-CSLT-certified employees. If this were to happen

The role of meteotropic factors (low atmospheric pressure and cold climate) in the development of functional disorders of respiratory system was studied for miners of the North-East region of the USSR. Regularities in forming external respiration dysfunctions during adaptation of migrating population and development of dust pathology are demonstrated. It was found that general adaptation syndrome in miners exposed to chronic hypobaric hypoxia and hypothermia is characterized by development of hyperventilation syndrome, leading to increase in dust load and moderate mobilization of respiratory t

Precise and focused risk assessments of liver fluke infection in cattle can be used to increase awareness and promote management uptake. However, accurate estimation of the risk of liver fluke infection in cattle is challenging. Liver fluke disease in adult cattle is typically sub-clinical - meaning infected animals often have no visible symptoms. This is exacerbated by the complex liver fluke life-cycle, which is highly sensitive to climate conditions and requires the presence of the intermediate snail host. The aim of this work was to create a predictive modelling tool that can be used to pr

The growing prevalence of heat stroke as a public health issue, exacerbated by climate change and increasing global temperatures, demands an immediate and strategic response to prevent weather-related morbidity and mortality. Heat stroke results from the body's inability to cope with excessive heat, leading to systemic inflammatory responses, cellular apoptosis, and potential multiorgan dysfunction or failure. However, little information explicitly outlines how to perform cold-water immersion in the emergency department (ED), including potential patient selection, how much water or ice to use,

The major challenges for the current climate change issue are an increase in global energy demand, a limited supply of fossil fuels, and increasing carbon footprints from fossil fuels, which have necessitated the exploration of sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. Biorefineries offer a promising path to sustainable fuel production, converting biomass into biofuels using diverse technologies. Aquatic biomass, such as macroalgae in this context, represents an abundant and renewable biomass resource that can be cultivated from water bodies without competing with traditional agricultural land

BACKGROUND: Amid accelerating anthropogenic climate and ecological crises, the expansion of health literacy as a comprehensive and multidimensional concept addressing upstream determinants of health has become relevant. A critical gap persists in measurement research to identify validated instruments for health literacy within the environment-health nexus.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the quality of existing instruments that measure Planetary and One Health Literacy or related constructs according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstrum

Climate change is disrupting myriad biological processes, including the ability of species to synchronize life-history events with optimal environmental conditions, with potential fitness impacts. Changes in migratory and breeding phenology and their consequences on fitness have been well studied in birds and some mammals. By contrast, changes in the phenology of overwinter sheltering and their influence on fitness have rarely been investigated. Pregnant female polar bears (Ursus maritimus) spend the winter fasting in a maternity den where they give birth and nurse their cubs until emergence i

BackgroundEmergency departments increasingly serve as access points for patients experiencing psychiatric crises, creating ethical challenges for nurses. These environments remain designed for biomedical acute care, fundamentally incongruent with the needs of individuals experiencing severe mental disorders. This phenomenon has rarely been explored through nurses' lived experiences.AimTo explore the structurally produced ethical conflicts and the care climate experienced by emergency nurses when caring for patients with severe mental disorders in general hospitals.Research designA qualitative

Rice is a staple agricultural resource for over half the global population. Using the data-modeling methods, which account for major biophysical processes and all major environmental and management factors, our study shows that rice production for 2006-2015 has increased by almost 2-fold since the 1960s, despite growing concerns about climate change and other extreme climate event risks. Management practices through the expansion of irrigated and non-irrigated cropping harvested areas and the increased rates of N fertilizer and manure application have helped to maintain higher production rates

Soil is the largest active carbon reservoir in terrestrial ecosystems. The persistence of soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a central role in regulating global carbon cycle and climate change. Iron oxides, with their unique chemical properties, are among the most important mineral phases controlling SOC stabilization. We synthesized current understanding of the mechanisms and drivers of SOC stabilization mediated by iron oxides. We highlighted the association patterns between iron oxides and organic carbon (Fe-OC) across forests, grasslands, and croplands, and explored how biotic and abiotic fac

High-mountain glaciers of the Mongolian Altai are among the most sensitive cryospheric indicators of continental climate change, yet many small glacier systems remain critically under-monitored. The Sair Uul massif - the site of the highest specific ablation rate in the Mongolian Altai - has received no prior comprehensive glaciological assessment. This study quantifies long-term glacier retreat in Sair Uul using multi-temporal Landsat (MSS, TM, ETM + , OLI, OLI-2) and Sentinel-2 imagery spanning 1977 to 2025, combined with NDSI and NDPCSI spectral indices and extended climate data from the To

Subtropical coastal regions are increasingly important public spaces within urban systems, yet microclimatic conditions and associated thermal outcomes of beaches and coastal areas remain understudied despite growing climate-related heat risks. The field study on Hailing Island, China, combined micrometeorological measurements with thermal perception assessment using thermal indices, including Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET), modified PET (mPET), Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), and a human energy budget (EB) approach, to characterize the beach microclimate and evaluate hum

Frog species worldwide are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and are the most endangered vertebrate group. To identify and mitigate impacts, it is necessary to have a method to monitor activity, particularly breeding activity, to detect changes over time. To this end, this study examined the breeding phenology of the poorly known magnificent broodfrog (Pseudophryne covacevichae) across its disjunct distribution in upland sclerophyll forests of the Wet Tropics of Australia. Using a species-specific acoustic recogniser, we processed near continuous recordings from November

Sludge Treatment Reed Beds (STRB) are an established sustainable technology for sludge dewatering and stabilization. The investigation and optimization of these systems are still ongoing under various climates; however, most studies focus on the dewatering efficiency and the optimum sludge loading rate (SLR), and little attention has been given so far to the related greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Thus, this study investigates the intricate dynamics of GHG emissions (CO2, CH4, NO, NH3) in pilot-planted STRB and conventional unplanted sludge drying beds under a hot and arid climate, testing thr
