In the last 20 years, cases of human cryptococcosis, have increased in immunocompromised patients. In several instances, the cases have been associated with the exposure of the patients to bird droppings. This report describes two newborn girls with single perineal opening (cloaca), and pseudoexstrophy in the form of divergent pubic bones and rectus muscles, and a low-set umbilicus. Both patients had a type II congenital pouch colon (CPC) with one hemiuterus and vagina on each side in the pelvis. In one patient, a Meckel's diverticulum was present 5 cm from the ileocecal junction. In both girls, a diverting proximal ileostomy was the initial surgery.

Concurrent infection with Cryptosporidium baileyi and chicken anaemia virus (CAV) was observed in a flock of 8000 4-week-old broiler chickens. The birds, showing overt symptoms of stunted growth and 25% mortality from hatching to 4 weeks of age, harboured the protozoan in the epithelial cells of the bursa of Fabricius and the urodeal portion of the cloaca. This is the first report on an outbreak of avian cryptosporidiosis associated with CAV.

Hydronephrosis associated with a septated cystic structure in the fetal pelvis in the absence of an otherwise identifiable fetal bladder should alert the sonographer to the possibility of a persistent cloaca. Problems associated with compromised urinary tract drainage and the associated oligohydramnios occurring early in gestation as well as frequent association of anomalies with other organ systems must be addressed. Squamous epithelia in fetal bladder aspirate is further supportive evidence for the diagnosis.

We collected fresh droppings and cloaca samples from feral pigeons Columba livia in the southern Swedish city of Malmö, and isolated the following fungi: Debaryomyces hansenii var. hansenii, Cryptococcus laurentii and Cryptococcus uniguttulatus. The first two species are known to be pathogenic to humans. No strains of Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans were found. Our results indicate that feral pigeons can be carriers of medically significant fungi other than Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans.

Cloacal dysgenesis is frequently associated with uterine anomalies. We report a case of pregnancy which resulted in an abortion in a woman with a persistent cloaca. Presumptive diagnosis before operation was ectopic pregnancy of the left tube. Postoperatively, the site of implantation of the conceptus was found to be the cavity of a unicornuate uterus in association with a rudimentary horn, the presence of which misled us to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy.

Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) observations were made on the adult females and males of nocturnally subperiodic Brugia malayi (Narathiwat, Southern Thailand) from 8-month-old intra-peritoneally infected jirds (Meriones unguiculatus). Descriptions of the morphological surfaces of anterior end, vulva, body cuticle, anus, posterior end of females and anterior end, body cuticle, cloaca, caudal papillae, spicules, sheath, posterior end of males were demonstrated. The comparison among these and other filarial parasites were also investigated.

Two captive-bred lizards, a Western spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) and a bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), were evaluated for anorexia and absence of feces. The iguana had a recent cloacal prolapse, whereas the dragon had a repaired prolapse 20 days earlier. Exploratory celiotomy under anesthesia revealed a devitalized distal colon in the iguana and stenosis of ductal organs in the pelvic cavity in the dragon, leading to colostomies. Cloacal anomalies occur when failure of the urogenital septum to separate the cloacal membrane results in the urethra, vagina, rectum and anus opening into a single common channel. The reported incidence is 1:50,000 live births. Short-term paediatric outcomes of surgery are well reported and survival into adulthood is now usual, but long-term outcome data are less comprehensive. In clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae, resistance to the newer beta-lactam antibiotics often results from overproduction of a cephalosporinase encoded by the beta-lactam-inducible ampC gene. Gastrointestinal duplications are a common type of congenital anomaly usually restricted to one part of the gut. Triplication of colon is a rare variation of duplication of the hindgut. Hindgut duplications are commonly associated with anomalies of other derivatives of the cloaca, namely, the lower genitourinary system. Here, we describe a child with triplication of colon with associated duplication of bladder and urethra and diphallus. The child described here is the only reported survivor with triplication.

This paper describes a case of mucormycosis combined with chlamydiosis in an African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus). The clinical signs included diarrhoea, an unsteady gait and a twisted neck. Smears of the spleen, liver and contents of the cloaca stained strongly positive for Chlamydia species. Histologically, hyphae typical of Zygomycetes were observed invading through the walls of blood vessels of the spleen. Rhizomucor pusillus was isolated as a pure culture from the intestines, lungs and liver.

The urachus is a vestigial structure of the allantois and cloaca. It involutes as fetal development progresses to become a fibrous cord, which courses between the umbilicus and bladder dome within the retropubic space. Infection occasionally occurs in patients with congenital patent urachus. Here, we report a patient with infection of a previously closed urachal tract presenting as an abdominal mass. This has rarely been described in the literature. Current knowledge on imaging findings to the diagnosis is discussed.

Caudal duplication syndrome is a rare entity in which structures derived from the embryonic cloaca and notochord are duplicated to various extents. The term encompasses a spectrum and often is quoted as one type of incomplete separation of monovular twins. The authors present more evidence giving credence to caudal twining as the mechanism behind the syndrome. The authors report successful surgical management of a full-term infant with a constellation of anomalies of caudal duplication syndrome.

The failure of urorectal septum to form and divide the cloaca into rectum dorsally, and urogenital sinus ventrally, results in a cloacal dysgenesis. It is an extremely rare anatomic malformation of the genito-urinary tract and alimentary tract. A case of pregnancy and vaginal delivery in a patient with cloacal dysgenesis type II and previous heart operation is presented. Both mother and newborn were in good condition. The way of treatment of such patients is discussed.
