40-Hz sensory stimulation-induced gamma oscillations enhancing brain network connectivity to improve poststroke cognitive impairment: study protocol for a prospective randomized controlled trial in China.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) has an incidence rate ranging from 24% to 80.97%. It reduces survival rates and increases disability among stroke patients, posing a substantial socioeconomic burden. Current treatments for PSCI primarily involve medication and rehabilitation; however, therapeutic efficacy remains limited, with unsatisfactory improvement in activities of daily living. This study aims to conduct a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 40-Hz sensory stimulation-induced gamma oscillations in the treatment of PSCI, including assessment

Longitudinal Coupling between Eating Disorder Psychopathology and Depression in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa Treated with Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy: A One-Year Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between eating disorder (ED) specific psychopathology and depressive symptomatology in EDs is often debated. The aim of this study was to provide an explicative model regarding the mechanisms by which enhanced cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT-E) might determine an amelioration of depressive symptoms in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: A total of 157 women with AN or BN and no history of childhood trauma or bipolar disorder were evaluated before treatment and after 12 months of CBT-E. Self-administered questionnaires were used to

Optimizing digital health technologies to improve therapeutic skill use and acquisition alongside enhanced cognitive-behavior therapy for binge-spectrum eating disorders: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Adjunctive mobile health (mHealth) technologies offer promise for improving treatment response to enhanced cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT-E) among individuals with binge-spectrum eating disorders, but research on the key "active" components of these technologies has been very limited. The present study will use a full factorial design to (1) evaluate the optimal combination of complexity of two commonly used mHealth components (i.e., self-monitoring and microinterventions) alongside CBT-E and (2) test whether the optimal complexity level of these interventions is moderated by basel

[Current perspectives on non-pharmacological approaches to cognitive impairment].

Cognitive impairment (CI) is increasingly recognized as a significant public health issue. Despite extensive research into its causes, mechanisms, and risk factors, along with advancements in pharmacological treatments for associated conditions, preventing or slowing the progression of cognitive decline often cannot be achieved through medication alone. Consequently, non-pharmacological strategies are also employed to support cognitive health in patients with cognitive disorders. This literature review explores the most effective non-drug therapies for cognitive impairment, as well as potentia

The role of embodiment in the treatment of patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa: a 2-year follow-up study proposing an integration between enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy and a phenomenological model of eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Recent studies demonstrated that the embodiment disorder represents a core feature of eating disorders (EDs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of its variation as a possible mediator of the efficacy of enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-E) on classic ED symptomatology, including body uneasiness. METHODS: 73 patients with anorexia nervosa and 68 with bulimia nervosa were treated with a multidisciplinary approach including CBT-E. Psychometric questionnaires were administered at baseline (T0) and after one (T1) and 2 years (T2) to evaluate general and ED-specific

Integrated narrative and cognitive therapy enhances psychological and functional recovery after ultra-low sphincter-preserving surgery for low rectal cancer: A randomized controlled trial with exploratory oncologic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-low sphincter-preserving surgery (ULSPS) for low rectal cancer often results in persistent bowel and sexual dysfunction alongside significant psychological distress, which may adversely affect recovery and may be associated with longer-term oncologic outcomes. Evidence on integrated psychosocial interventions in this context remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a structured six-month psychosocial intervention integrating narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy improves psychological and functional recovery after ultra-low sphincter-preserving surgery fo

Hesperidin mitigates cognitive and anxiety-like deficits by enhancing hippocampal antioxidant defenses, reducing neuroinflammation, and preventing neuronal apoptosis in a third-trimester-equivalent rat model of developmental ethanol neurotoxicity.

Ethanol exposure during brain development has been associated with hippocampal oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and apoptosis, resulting in lasting cognitive and emotional deficits characteristic of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). This study evaluated the neuroprotective potential of Hesperidin, a citrus flavanone with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, against developmental ethanol neurotoxicity. Neonatal Wistar rats received ethanol (5.25 g/kg/day; 11.9% v/v) from postnatal days 2-10 and were subsequently treated intraperitoneally with Hesperidin (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg).

Icariin promotes lysosomal degradation of amyloid-β precursor protein via enhanced endosome-lysosome trafficking to reduce amyloid-β accumulation and improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease models.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a devastating global public health crisis, characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory impairment, with its prevalence and associated disability rates rising exponentially amid global population aging. The pathological hallmarks of AD include the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau protein tangles, which primarily arise from the aberrant processing of amyloid-β precursor protein (AβPP). Currently, approved therapeutic strategies for AD only provide symptomatic relief, and there is a critical unmet need for effe

(+)-Eburnamenine-14-carboxylic acid (2-nitroxyethyl) ester (VA-045), a putative cognitive enhancer, facilitates recovery from concussive brain injury-induced learning and memory impairments in mice.

We characterized alterations in the ability of concussive brain injury (CBI) models to perform a water-finding task and examined effects of (+)-eburnamenine-14-carboxylic acid (2-nitroxyethyl) ester (VA-045), a novel apovincaminic acid derivative, on post-traumatic impairments in latent learning and memory processes. Two types of CBI-induced amnesia (retrograde and anterograde) were produced by means of post- or preacquisition head impact using a simple weight-drop device. Profound impairments of latent learning and memory processes related to retention and retrieval were observed in the CBI m

A study protocol for a randomised trial of adjunct computerised memory specificity training (c-MeST) for major depression in youth: targeting cognitive mechanisms to enhance usual care outcomes in mental health settings.

BACKGROUND: Youth depression is highly prevalent and is related to impairments in academic, social and behavioural functioning. Evidence-based treatments are available, but many young people do not respond or sufficiently recover with first-line options, and a significant proportion experience relapse. Consequently, there is clear scope to enhance intervention in this critical period of early-onset depression. Memory specificity training (MeST) is a low-intensity intervention for depression that targets reduced specificity when recalling memories of the past, a common cognitive vulnerability i

Cognitive remediation in people with bipolar disorder and cognitive dysfunction: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a frequent feature of bipolar disorder (BD), often persisting during euthymic phases and affecting multiple cognitive domains. These deficits impair functional recovery and quality of life. Pharmacological treatments have shown limited efficacy in ameliorating cognitive dysfunction in BD. Cognitive remediation (CR) has emerged as a promising nonpharmacological alternative. However, reviews of its efficacy in BD have reported inconsistent findings. One major limitation highlighted in past reviews is the heterogeneity of study samples, due to the inclusion of

Rethinking the Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Healthy Older Adults: The Motor-Cognitive Active Gamified Immersive Cultural (MAGIC) Exergames.

Though exergames attract considerable research interest as tools for preserving cognitive function in older adults, a decade of meta-analytic evidence reveals a persistent gap between theoretical promise and empirical demonstration: exergames rarely outperform conventional motor-cognitive training and do not generate the sustained engagement that preventive benefit requires. These results reflect limitations that are structural: the field focused predominantly on clinical populations rather than primary prevention; training concepts borrowed from rehabilitation protocols rather than grounded i

An update on the effects of cerebellar transcranial magnetic stimulation on cognitive function.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, is widely employed in treating various neurological and psychiatric disorders due to its favorable safety and tolerability profile. While traditionally recognized for its role in motor control, accumulating evidence implicates the cerebellum in regulating non-motor functions, including cognition. Historically, TMS research predominantly targeted cortical brain regions. However, leveraging the functional and structural characteristics of the cerebellum, recent investigations have increasingly focused on the cereb

Mechanisms of Exercise Training in Ameliorating Cognitive Function in Patients With Depression: A Narrative Review of Molecular Targets and Clinical Prescriptions.

Depression is frequently accompanied by core cognitive impairments, notably in executive function and memory. Although the ameliorative effects of exercise training have been widely corroborated, the evidence regarding its underlying mechanisms remains fragmented. To provide a comprehensive and integrated view, this review proposes a testable, cross-scale "peripheral-central-behavioral" hypothetical mechanistic model to explain the effects of exercise on cognition. The core theoretical contribution of this study lies in explicitly postulating a "molecule-structure-function" cross-level mediati

Berry Consumption and Its Role in the Modulation of Obesity and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Most dementias are preceded by mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a transitional clinical stage characterized by cognitive decline that does not yet significantly interfere with activities of daily living. Obesity and diabetes are among the major risk factors for MCI and are strongly associated with unhealthy lifestyle patterns. The growing global prevalence of obesity has intensified the need for effective dietary strategies that promote both weight control and neuroprotection. Red fruits, which are rich in bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, have demonstrated potential roles in modulatin
