Increased Prefrontal Activity with Aging Reflects Nonspecific Neural Responses Rather than Compensation.

Elevated prefrontal cortex activity is often observed in healthy older adults despite declines in their memory and other cognitive functions. According to one view, this activity reflects a compensatory functional posterior-to-anterior shift, which contributes to maintenance of cognitive performance when posterior cortical function is impaired. Alternatively, the increased prefrontal activity may be less efficient or less specific because of structural and neurochemical changes accompanying aging. These accounts are difficult to distinguish on the basis of average activity levels within brain

From Correlation to Causation: Understanding Episodic Memory Networks.

Episodic memory, our ability to recall past experiences, is supported by structures in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) particularly the hippocampus, and its interactions with fronto-parietal brain regions. Understanding how these brain regions coordinate to encode, consolidate, and retrieve episodic memories remains a fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods, especially transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), have advanced episodic memory research beyond traditional lesion studies and neuroimaging by enabling causal investigations through ta…

The Visual Systems of Zebrafish.

The zebrafish visual system has become a paradigmatic preparation for behavioral and systems neuroscience. Around 40 types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) serve as matched filters for stimulus features, including light, optic flow, prey, and objects on a collision course. RGCs distribute their signals via axon collaterals to 12 retinorecipient areas in forebrain and midbrain. The major visuomotor hub, the optic tectum, harbors nine RGC input layers that combine information on multiple features. The retinotopic map in the tectum is locally adapted to visual scene statistics and visual subfield

Stress, inflammation, depression, and dementia associated with phosphate toxicity.

Depression and dementia are predicted to increase within aging global populations. Pathophysiological effects of phosphate toxicity, dysregulated amounts of accumulated phosphorus in body tissue, are under-investigated in association with stress, inflammation, depression, and dementia. A comparative analysis of concepts in cited sources from the research literature was used to synthesize novel themes exploring the disease-oriented neuroscience effects of phosphate toxicity. Phosphate toxicity is associated with activation of cellular stress response systems and inflammation. Cortisol released

Investigational and Therapeutic Applications of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Schizophrenia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This current review summarizes the investigational and therapeutic applications of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in schizophrenia. RECENT FINDINGS: Fairly consistent findings of an impaired cortical excitation-inhibition balance, cortical plasticity, and motor resonance have been reported in schizophrenia. Cortical connectivity impairments have also been demonstrated in motor and prefrontal brain regions. In terms of treatment, the best support is for 1-Hz TMS to the left temporoparietal cortex for the short-term treatment of persistent auditory hallucinations. Hi

Deeper insights into semantic relations: an fMRI study of part-whole and functional associations.

Cognitive neuroscience research on semantics recognizes a distinction between categorical and associated relations. However, associations can be divided further, such as into part-whole and functional relations. We investigated the neural basis of both relations using a picture-word interference task in an fMRI study. While the left supramarginal gyrus and the right inferior temporal sulcus were activated by part-whole over functional relations, the same applies to the right parahippocampal complex contrasting the functional over part-whole relations. The small effect sizes of our analyses hav…

Is the parietal lobe necessary for recollection in humans?

An intriguing puzzle in cognitive neuroscience over recent years has been the common observation of parietal lobe activation in functional neuroimaging studies during the performance of human memory tasks. These findings have surprised scientists and clinicians because they challenge decades of established thinking that the parietal lobe does not support memory function. However, direct empirical investigation of whether circumscribed parietal lobe lesions might indeed be associated with human memory impairment has been lacking. Here we confirm using functional magnetic resonance imaging that …

Understanding the Temporal Dynamics of Accelerated Brain Aging and Resilient Brain Aging: Insights from Discriminative Event-Based Analysis of UK Biobank Data.

The intricate dynamics of brain aging, especially the neurodegenerative mechanisms driving accelerated (ABA) and resilient brain aging (RBA), are pivotal in neuroscience. Understanding the temporal dynamics of these phenotypes is crucial for identifying vulnerabilities to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of the temporal dynamics and neuroimaging biomarkers linked to ABA and RBA. This study addressed this gap by utilizing a large-scale UK Biobank (UKB) cohort, with the aim to elucidate brain aging heterogeneity and estab

[Memory disorders in schizophrenia].

The current interest in memory disorders in schizophrenia results from the way perceptions of schizophrenia--whose organic origin is becoming increasingly evident--and memory--according to which there exist not one, but several memories--have developed. Memory disorders in the schizophrenic cannot be considered in isolation from knowledge accumulated in other areas of the cognitive and neuro-sciences; a more detailed understanding of these disorders requires a comparison of the different cognitive approaches, both with each other and with the neurobiological and clinical approaches, so that th

Impaired Velocity Processing Reveals an Agnosia for Motion in Depth.

Many individuals with normal visual acuity are unable to discriminate the direction of 3-D motion in a portion of their visual field, a deficit previously referred to as a stereomotion scotoma. The origin of this visual deficit has remained unclear. We hypothesized that the impairment is due to a failure in the processing of one of the two binocular cues to motion in depth: changes in binocular disparity over time or interocular velocity differences. We isolated the contributions of these two cues and found that sensitivity to interocular velocity differences, but not changes in binocular disp

Valence-dependent functional connectivity during vicarious observation of hostile and affiliative social interactions.

Social environment profoundly influences well-being, yet the neural correlates of vicariously observing workplace interactions across the emotional spectrum remain underexplored. This study investigated valence-dependent patterns of functional connectivity (FC) during observation of hostile and affiliative customer-employee encounters in thirty-four healthy adults. Seed-based FC analysis examined the connectivity of key regions associated with empathy and relational social cognitive processing, and region-of-interest (ROI)-to-ROI analysis evaluated the configuration of three core brain network
