The role of domain-specific working memory and emotion regulation in the mathematics anxiety-performance relation among upper elementary students.

This study examined the role of domain-specific working memory and emotion regulation in the relation between mathematics anxiety and mathematics performance among 264 upper elementary students (Grades 3-5). Participants completed measures of mathematics testing and learning anxiety, verbal and numerical working memory, cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, general anxiety, mathematics self-efficacy, and calculation. Results showed that verbal working memory, but not numerical working memory, mediated the relation between mathematics testing anxiety and calculation. Higher verbal work

[Menopause hormone therapy and cognition. Postmenopausal women management: CNGOF and GEMVi clinical practice guidelines].

The results of the WHI, which reported a doubling of the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a decline in cognitive function in women who w … is observed. Moreover, cognition remains relatively stable at the beginning of menopause since the cognitive reserve as well as the different compensation circuits allow compensation for estrogen deficiency. This does not in any way prejudge a possible positive effect of MHT on AD, which is very difficult to demonstrate, as the age of onset of this dementia is ver …

Further evaluation of narrative description as a measure of cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The narrative description (ND) test objectively measures the ability to understand and describe visual scenes. As subtle differences in speech occur early in cognitive decline, we analyzed linguistic features for their utility in detecting cognitive impairment and predicting downstream decline. METHOD: Participants (n = 52) with normal cognition to mild dementia performed the ND test (watched twenty 30-s video clips and described the visual content). Cognitive function was followed for up to 5 years. We computed simple linguistic features such as content efficiency, speech rate, an

Trust in context: Examining cognitive control in trust decisions.

Social trust is a key component to relationships between individuals and within communities. Failure to correctly choose to trust or not can have significant consequences in interpersonal relationships, employment, and more. While work has identified cognitive and affective processes relevant to trust, relatively less has examined the role of cognitive control during trust decisions and its interaction with affective processing. This study modifies an expectancy AX task to incorporate trusting behavior in two ways: first by establishing the trust component in a similar framework as AX variants

Rey Tangled Line Test: A measure of processing speed in TBI.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological assessment plays a key role in characterizing and detecting cognitive impairment after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Rey Tangled Line Test (RTLT), an understudied neuropsychological assessment thought to be capable of detecting visual processing deficits, was examined to determine which cognitive abilities may contribute to performance on the test in participants with a history of TBI. METHOD: One-hundred participants with a history of mild to severe TBI were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests assessing attention, executive functioning, memory

Obtaining comparable measurement of midlife cognitive functioning from disparate cognitive tasks.

OBJECTIVE: National surveys of health and aging increasingly collect data via multiple modes, including via face-to-face, phone, and the web. However, mode effects-differences in measurement due to how the data are collected, rather than to underlying differences in cognition-undermine comparability in performance for different segments of samples, impeding analysis of cognitive function in the full sample. This article reports on the construction and evaluation of a measure of general cognitive functioning comparable across diverse phone and web cognitive tasks for the 2021 follow-up of the H

Cognitive impairments associated with meningiomas and gliomas in adults: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Meningiomas and gliomas are common adult brain tumors often linked to cognitive impairments. Meningiomas are frequently overlooked as a potential contributor to such impairments, due to their benign, extra-axial, and slow-growing nature. This systematic review compares the type and frequency of cognitive impairments associated with these brain tumors, prior to any therapeutic intervention. METHOD: Systematic search conducted in ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library identified records on cognitive status of adults with untreated, nonrecurrent gliomas or meningiomas, publish

Intraindividual variability in neuropsychological performance predicts cognitive decline and death in HIV.

OBJECTIVE: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) occurs in a significant percentage of HIV-infected (HIV+) adults. Increased intraindividual variability (IIV) in cognitive function may be an early marker of emerging neurocognitive disorder, which suggests that IIV may be a sensitive measure of neurologic compromise in HIV. In the current study, we hypothesize that increased IIV may predict impending morbidity, including future cognitive decline and death. METHOD: In 708 HIV+ participants followed longitudinally for up to 14 years, we assessed the role of dispersion in forecasting deat

What characterizes the exceptional cognition of superagers? A systematic review of multidomain biomarkers of successful cognitive aging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Substantial heterogeneity in cognitive aging trajectories has been observed among older adults, with some individuals maintaining exceptional cognitive function ("superagers" or "successful cognitive aging [SCA]"). The biological mechanisms underlying SCA remain unclear. This systematic review synthesizes current evidence on quantifiable SCA biomarkers to address this critical gap. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Web of S

Women Exhibit Lower Global Left Frontal Cortex Connectivity Among Cognitively Unimpaired Elderly Individuals: A Pilot Study from SILCODE.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests that sex differences exist in cognitive reserve (CR) for cognitively unimpaired (CU) elderly individuals. Global left frontal connectivity (gLFC connectivity) is a reliable neural substrate of CR. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore sex differences in gLFC connectivity among CU elderly individuals. METHODS: One hundred thirteen normal controls (NCs) (women = 66) and 132 individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) (women = 92) were recruited from the Sino Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Decline (SILCODE) (data 1). Among them, 88 s…

Preliminary study of neurocognitive dysfunction in adult moyamoya disease and improvement after superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery bypass.

OBJECTIVE: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic cerebrovascular occlusive disease of unknown etiology. In addition, the neurocognitive impairment of adults with MMD is infrequently reported and, to date, has not been well described. We attempted to determine both the neurocognitive profile of adult moyamoya disease and whether a superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) anastomosis can improve the neurocognitive impairment in exhibiting hemodynamic disturbance without stroke. METHODS: From September 2010 through November 2012, 12 patients with angiographically diagnosed MMD

Cognitive-behavioral reciprocity: Testing the bidirectional relationship between antisocial cognition and delinquency.

OBJECTIVE: Although reciprocity between variables is a topic of interest in the field of criminology, we cannot simply assume that all or even most criminological relationships are bidirectional without testing them empirically. The objective of the current investigation was to test whether delinquency and antisocial cognition are reciprocally or bidirectionally related. HYPOTHESES: The hypotheses evaluated as part of the present study proposed that antisocial cognition would predict delinquency, delinquency would predict antisocial cognition, and bidirectional models would display significan

Cognitive Load Impairs Time to Initiate and Complete Shooting Tasks in ROTC Members.

INTRODUCTION: Multitasking typically requires an individual to simultaneously process cognitive information while performing a motor task. Cognitive motor interference (CMi) is encountered when cognitive challenges negatively impact motor task performance. Military personnel encounter cognitively taxing situations, especially during combat or other tactical performance scenarios, which may lead to injury or motor performance deficits (i.e., shooting inaccuracy, delayed stimulus-response time, and slowed movement speed). The purpose of the current study was to develop four cognitive motor shoot
