Unravelling the ultrastructure of ascending colon fluids from patients with ulcerative colitis by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy.

OBJECTIVES: Studies on the characterization of ascending colonic fluids are scarce, limited to physicochemical characterization of their composition, and little is known for the morphology of the produced colloidal phases. In an attempt to gain insights for their structure at the ultrastructural level, samples from the lumen of ascending colon were collected from patients with ulcerative colitis in remission. METHODS: After ultracentrifugation, the supernatants of two samples (one with high and one with low cholesterol level) were visualized by means of cryogenic transmission electron microsc

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-producing ascending colon cancer as indicated by histopathological findings: report of a case.

Various types of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing malignant tumors have been reported. However, a G-CSF-producing colorectal cancer is rare. We present a case of G-CSF-producing ascending colon cancer. An 81-year-old man was referred to our hospital with right lower abdominal pain. A colon fiberscopy revealed an ascending colon tumor, and histological examination revealed tubular adenocarcinoma. He was admitted due to worsening abdominal pain. Although laboratory data showed an elevated white blood cell (WBC) count of 17000/mm3 with 77.8% neutrophils, elevated C-reaction

Serosal injury in the equine jejunum and ascending colon after ischemia-reperfusion or intraluminal distention and decompression.

OBJECTIVE: To document morphologic changes that occur in equine intestinal serosa after experimentally induced ischemia and subsequent reperfusion (jejunum, ascending colon) or after intraluminal distention and decompression (jejunum). STUDY DESIGN: Morphologic effects of ischemia-reperfusion or intraluminal distention-decompression determined on the serosal layer of the equine jejunum. The large colon serosa was evaluated after ischemia-reperfusion injury. ANIMALS OR SAMPLE POPULATION: Seven adult horses. METHODS: After induction of general anesthesia and ventral median celiotomy, ischemia

Colonic tuberculosis masquerading as ascending colon carcinoma in a patient of FIGO Stage IIB cervical carcinoma following chemo-radiotherapy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Colonic tuberculosis may masquerade colonic carcinoma. Also, intestinal tuberculosis may mimic colonic carcinoma, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, etc. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40 years female was diagnosed with cervical carcinoma FIGO Stage IIB underwent chemo-radiotherapy. She was symptom-free for a few months and then she developed right-sided abdominal pain and abdominal fullness for 4 months. She underwent a colonoscopy that showed ulcerative growth and friable tissue in hepatic flexure of colon and histopathology and immunohistochemistry findings suggested no

A Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor in the Ascending Colon: A Rare Case Involving a Patient With Tuberous Sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) is a genetic disorder characterized by the development of benign tumors in various organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, and gastrointestinal tract. Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal tumors associated with TSC. Primary gastrointestinal PEComas are uncommon. This report describes a PEComa in the ascending colon of a patient with TSC and presents a review of the relevant literature. A 33-year-old female patient with a history of TSC presented with a 30-mm mass in the ascending colon that had remained stable for two years

Robot-Assisted Ileocecal Resection for Ascending Colon Cancer in a Patient With an Ileal Conduit: A Case Report.

We present a case of robot-assisted ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer in a patient with an ileal conduit, safely performed using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging to ensure the safe preservation of the ileal conduit. An 85-year-old woman with hematochezia was diagnosed with ascending colon cancer (cT3N0M0: stage IIA). She had undergone robot-assisted radical cystectomy with ileal conduit construction eight months earlier. Given her advanced age, a robot-assisted ileocecal resection was performed as a minimally invasive approach. Due to previous surgeries, dense adhesion

Endoscopic Management of the Ascending Colon Perforation Secondary to a Rare-Earth Magnets Ingestion in a Pediatric Patient.

Rare magnets (neodymium magnets) are high-powered magnets known to cause intestinal perforation if the intestinal mucosa is trapped in between 2 or several magnets. A bowel perforation in pediatric patients secondary to magnets is usually managed with a surgical intervention that might require enterectomy. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with abdominal pain and a finding on abdominal x-ray of radiopaque foreign bodies located in the ascending colon. He underwent colonoscopy with a finding of embedded magnets with a colonic perforation. The colonoscopy revealed embedded mag

[Carcinoma of the Ascending Colon Showing Rapid Progression of Disseminated Carcinomatosis of the Bone Marrow-Report of a Case].

A 72-year-old man with ascending colon cancer was admitted to our hospital. Right hemicolectomy and lymph node dissection(D3)were performed. The pathological diagnosis was signet-ring cell carcinoma, T4a(SE), N2b, M1a(LYM), Stage Ⅳ, R0, Cur B. Capecitabine was administered after surgery. Subcutaneous bleeding, thrombocytopenia, and a rapid increase in tumor marker levels occurred 9 months after surgery. He had already developed disseminated intravascular coagulation and was admitted to our hospital immediately. CT scan revealed metastasis in the thoracic vertebrae. Bone scintigraphy demonstrat

A birth cohort analysis of the incidence of ascending and descending colon cancer in the United States, 1973-2008.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence indicating that the trends in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates in the United States differ according to CRC subsites, including for ascending cancer which has shown a different pattern from the overall trends. We investigated the time trends for ascending and descending colon cancer in the United States by race and gender to identify the specific components that may account for the incidence trends. METHODS: Using data from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program for 1973-2008, we conducted age-period-cohort mode

Duplication cyst of ascending colon presenting as an ileal volvulus in a child: a case report and review of literature.

Alimentary tract duplications are uncommon congenital anomalies that may be found anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract. They have a diverse presentation and often times present with complications of intestinal obstruction and/or lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage. We report a very rare finding of a colonic duplication cyst which presented as an ileal volvulus in a young girl. While available investigations were non-specific, the child survived on account of an early decision to operate. She had resection of the duplication cyst and ileo-colic anastomosis. She made good recovery post-opera

Submucosal lipoma of the ascending colon as a source of massive lower gastro-intestinal bleeding: a case report.

Colonic lipomas are relatively uncommon lesions. They have been documented as the source of massive low gastro-intestinal bleeding in only five previous reports in the English language literature. We report an extremely rare case of massive haemorrhage caused by an ascending colon submucosal lipoma and review the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management.

Double-contrast barium-enema examination and endoscopy in the detection of polypoid lesions in the cecum and ascending colon.

Fifty-three patients with 54 polypoid lesions in the ascending colon and cecum underwent colonoscopy and double-contrast barium-enema examination (DC-BE). Colonoscopy could not completely examine the cecum in three patients (failure rate 6%) and DC-BE had four false positive results. Colonoscopy detected 40 lesions (sensitivity 78%) and DC-BE 45 lesions (sensitivity 88%). A carcinoma and a villous adenoma were missed by both methods. The overall accuracy for colonoscopy was 80%, 76% if corrected for unsuccessful procedures; DC-BE showed accuracy rates of 82% and 83%. In combination, the two me

A mixed-type intermesenteric trunk as a major contributor to the ascending, transverse, and descending colons: a case report.

PURPOSE: We present a case in which a mixed-type intermesenteric trunk was the major arterial supply for the ascending, transverse, and descending colons. METHODS: We dissected a cadaver of a man aged 74 years that was used for a routine abdominal dissection course of 2nd year medical students. RESULTS: We observed that a mixed-type intermesenteric trunk supplied the majority of the colon, originating from the inferior mesenteric artery. The vessel was non-tortuous and had a counter clockwise course. It gave branches that supply the marginal artery at the splenic and hepatic flexures and at

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the ascending colon mesentery in a child: case report and review of the literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal tumor. Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors of the gastrointestinal tract are very rare, with only about 20 previous reported cases. We present a 5.5-year-old boy with PEComa of the right colon. Treatment consisted of tumor resection only, without additional adjuvant therapy. Two years after surgery, he remains free of tumor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the youngest reported child with PEComa of the colon. We review the literature concerning PEComas in children, especially those of the gastrointestinal tract. We empha
