[Laparoscopic treatment of sigmoid colon intussusception secondary to giant submucosal lipoma].

Colonic lipomas have very low frequency, are usually asymptomatic and diagnosis is made incidentally. Seventy-five per cent of lipomas larger than 4 cm are symptomatic, causing abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, obstruction and exceptionally invagination. The resection of invaginated segment is mandatory in cases with invagination and can be performed by laparoscopy when colonic dilation is moderate. We present a 73-year-old man who entered the emergency department complaining of intermitent abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, absence of bowel movements and flatulence, during four days. A CT scan s

Anastomotic Recurrence of Sigmoid Colon Cancer over Five Years after Surgery.

The incidence of anastomotic recurrence after curative resection of colorectal cancer is relatively low compared to that of other types of recurrence, such as hepatic, lung and local recurrence. However, almost all cases of anastomotic recurrence of colorectal cancer occur within 3 years after surgery. We experienced a rare case of anastomotic recurrence in whom colonoscopy revealed no signs of recurrence 3 years after surgery; however, anastomotic recurrence was detected over 5 years after surgery. A 60-year-old female with a history of surgery for cancer of the cecum in her forties underwent

Solitary amyloidosis of the sigmoid colon featuring submucosal tumor caused hematochezia.

A previously a healthy 64-year-old woman complained of a two-week history of hemorrhaging upon defecation. The laboratory and urinalysis findings were normal, and no serum or urine M components were detectable on protein electrophoresis. An air contrast barium enema revealed an elevated lesion measuring -20 mm in diameter with a smooth surface and a depression in the sigmoid colon. Colonoscopy revealed a red colored and congested tumor. The exposed surface of the submucosal tumor (SMT) center was somewhat yellow in color and covered with fuzz. All other portions of the colon were normal. The e

Demonstration of a sigmoid colon fistula using CT with gastrografin enema.

Intestinal fistula is one of the serious complications after surgery. The strategies of treatment are different according to the location, size, and number of intestinal fistula. We present a case of sigmoid colon fistula which occurred after surgery and chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. In this case, CT with gastrografin enema showed the exact location of the fistula.

Impacted foreign body in the sigmoid colon presenting as recurrent diverticulitis.

We report on a patient with left-sided abdominal pain thought to be caused by recurring diverticulitis. Computed tomography of the sigmoid colon revealed diverticulosis without the presence of a foreign body. During colonoscopy, a phytobezoar in the form of a vegetable stem was discovered transversely impacted within two diverticular openings in the lumen of the sigmoid colon. A localized inflammatory reaction was present without obstruction or perforation. After endoscopic removal of the phytobezoar, the abdominal pain resolved. The patient's presumed diverticulitis was an inflammatory reacti

[A cystic mesenteric lymphangioma presented at the colon sigmoid. Case report].

BACKGROUND: Cystic lymphangioma of the mesentery is an uncommon tumor; its incidence is 1:160,000. Our objective was to present the case of a patient with cystic lymphangioma of mesentery located at the colon. CLINICAL CASE: Female 25 years, attending consultation with a clinical picture suggestive of right ovarian cyst and increased abdominal perimeter. On physical examination abdominal painful tumor was identified, with deep palpation and mobilization. Abdominal ultrasound findings suggested giant right ovarian cyst. Laparotomy showed a cystic mass (18 x 11 cm size) depending mesenterium an

Composite mesh migration into the sigmoid colon following ventral hernia repair.

Ventral hernia repair is frequently performed with one of a number of mesh products, usually with good results. The current emphasis on laparoscopic repair has resulted in multiple composite mesh products for use in the peritoneal cavity. The addition of a second layer of more inert material to the mesh is intended to prevent adhesions with the underlying viscera, and multiple studies demonstrate effectiveness in doing this. Despite this, occasional complications may still present. We present the case of a 65-year-old man coming to our clinic 5 years after a third ventral hernia repair/revisio

[A case of primary sigmoid colon mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma].

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most frequently involved site of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Stomach is the most common site of involvement among the GI tract. However, MALT lymphoma of the large intestine is rare. A diagnosis is established by pathological examination of the surgical or endoscopic specimens. A 72-year-old man with low abdominal pain was diagnosed as a sigmoid MALT lymphoma, which was noted as an obstructing mass in a colonoscopic examination. A left hemicolectomy was performed, and the patient has had no recurrence postoperatively without any che

Toothpick impaction with sigmoid colon pseudodiverticulum formation successfully treated with colonoscopy.

Foreign bodies in the colon are encountered with increasing frequency, but only sporadic reports concerning their management have appeared in the literature. While most ingested foreign bodies usually pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully, sharp foreign bodies such as toothpicks infrequently cause intestinal perforation and may even result in death. We report our experience with a patient with a sigmoid colon pseudodiverticulum formation, a complication of accidental ingestion of a toothpick that was diagnosed and successfully managed colonoscopically.

Immune reconstitution in the sigmoid colon after long-term HIV therapy.

Early and profound CD4+ T-cell depletion in gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) may drive Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) immunopathogenesis, and GALT immune reconstitution on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may be suboptimal. Blood and sigmoid colon biopsies were collected from HAART-treated individuals with undetectable blood HIV RNA for > or =4 years and from uninfected controls. HIV proviral levels and T-cell phenotype/function were examined in both compartments. CD4+ T-cell reconstitution in the sigmoid, including CD4+ T cells expressing CCR5, exceeded that in blood and

[Ultrasonographic assessment of sigmoid colon in patients with irritable bowel syndrome].

UNLABELLED: Although the pathophysiological factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the function of sigmoid colon has been reported as a major pathogenesis of IBS. Our objective was to evaluate motility patterns of sigmoid colon by using ultrasonography(US) in patients with IBS compared to healthy volunteers (HV). SUBIECTS AND METHODS: <Fasting phase> US examination of sigmoid colon was performed in 69 patients with IBS and 69 HV with 3.75 MHz curved array scanner and 7.5 MHz linear array scanner. The US probe was positioned longitudinally to permit simul

Sigmoid colon cancer associated with primary hyperparathyroidism: report of a case.

We present herein a case of sigmoid colon cancer associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP). PHP is known to be associated with malignancy, and decreased intracolonic calcium (Ca) resulting from increased vitamin D (VD) levels may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis. PHP was diagnosed in this patient by preoperative screening blood chemistry examination. The blood level of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) was elevated and a parathyroid gland scintigram demonstrated abnormal uptake near the right lower lobe of the thyroid. There was no evidence of bone metastasis, and a sigmoid cole

Actinomycosis complicating chronic diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon: a missed association?

The diagnosis and treatment of abdominal actinomycosis is difficult. We report a case of chronic diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon with stricture formation and obstruction, which was complicated by intramural actinomycosis. We suggest that diverticular strictures and actinomycosis may coexist more often than the literature suggests.

Sigmoid colon obstruction due to blunt abdominal trauma: a case report.

Post-traumatic colonic stenosis (obstruction) is rare. We experienced a case of sigmoid obstruction due to blunt abdominal trauma. A 75-year-old man was hit on the lower abdomen 3 days before admission and gradually developed abdominal pain and distension. Laboratory data showed severe inflammation and a barium enema disclosed obstruction of the sigmoid colon. Conservative treatment was carefully carried out, because there was no sign of peritoneal irritation and there were passages of normal stool and flatus. The sigmoid obstruction gradually improved and the stenosis was almost undetectable
