Biofilms are surface-attached microbial communities that play vital roles in natural ecosystems and contribute to persistent problems in medicine and industry. These communities exhibit heterogeneous chemical, physical, and physiological properties, which are governed by reciprocal structure-function relationships. Linking structure to function is crucial for understanding biofilm physiology but remains challenging due to the structural complexity of naturally formed biofilms. Bioprinting offers exquisite control over biofilm structure and holds potential for systematically exploring these rel

Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) applications against major insect pests and disease vectors rely on the cost-effective production of high-quality sterile males. This largely depends on the optimal management of target pest colonies by maximizing the benefits provided by a genetically rich and pathogen-free mother colony, the presence of symbiotic microorganisms, and efficient domestication, mass-rearing, irradiation, and release processes. At the same time microbial (bacteria, fungi, microsporidia, and viruses) pathogen outbreaks should be minimized or eliminated, and the use of hazardous chemi

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus is a facultative anaerobe that can generate energy through oxidative phosphorylation or solely glycolysis, and inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation results in the formation of small colony variants (SCVs). SCVs lack a proton motive force (PMF), increasing antibiotic tolerance and contributing to persistent infection in the host. Bicarbonate is an abundant antimicrobial compound in the human host that S. aureus encounters during infection. Bicarbonate alters the PMF, enhancing antibiotic susceptibility in S. aureus, but its impact on S. aureus SCVs remains unex

Staphylococcus aureus small-colony variants (SCVs) are unique phenotypic forms that significantly contribute to the development of chronic, recurrent, and treatment-refractory infections. These variants arise from metabolic defects, most commonly in the menadione, hemin, or thymidine biosynthetic pathways, leading to slow growth, atypical colony morphology, and altered virulence expression. The ability of these bacteria to persist intracellularly, form robust biofilms, and resist multiple antibiotics poses a significant clinical challenge. SCVs have been implicated in osteomyelitis, prosthetic

This article explores female healthcare at the crossroads of bacteriology and obstetric research. Puerperal fever or childbed fever manifested as an epidemic since the nineteenth century, and in both Europe and America, it charted a distinct course for bacteriological research. With the identification of bacteriological causes, new sets of public health regimes were instituted in both regions. The experience of the colonies, however, differed. This paper focusses on how colonial discourse on obstetric nursing, midwifery, clinical hygiene, and maternal healthcare can be positioned in this globa

Background. Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major causative bacteria of pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD); however, the mechanisms underlying its severity and invasion remain to be defined. Pneumococcal colonies exhibit opaque and transparent opacity phase variations, which have been associated with invasive infections and nasal colonization, respectively, in animal studies. This study evaluated the relationship between the opacity of pneumococcal colonies and the clinical presentation of pneumococcal pneumonia.Methods. This retrospective study included adult patients hospitalize

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The administration of growth and neurotrophic factors has been attempted experimentally as a new therapeutic strategy for severe facial paralysis. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has an effect on the treatment of central nervous system injuries, such as cerebral infarction and spinal cord injury. This study aimed at examining the effects of G-CSF on facial nerve regeneration in rats.
METHODS: The left facial nerve of rats was either partially resected (resection group) or severed and sutured (suture group) at the main trunk outside the temporal bone. In each

We report a case of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor(G-CSF)-producing undifferentiated sarcoma of the transverse colon. A 80-year-old woman was referred to our hematology department after visiting her primary physician with chief complaints of decreased appetite and fatigue. An elevated white blood cell count was observed during examination. Further laboratory tests at our hospital revealed an elevated white blood cell count of 95,800/μL and a plasma G-CSF level of 895 pg/mL. The patient was referred to our department after a tumor lesion was found in the transverse colon during computed

OBJECTIVES: Colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF1R) is vital for the recruitment of monocytes, and their proliferation and differentiation into functional osteoclasts. Mouse studies, where CSF1R and its cognate ligand are absent, have significant craniofacial phenotypes, but these have not been studied in detail.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant CD1 mice were fed diets laced with CSF1R inhibitor-PLX5622 starting at embryonic day 3.5 (E3.5) up to birth. Pups were collected at E18.5 to study CSF1R expression using immunofluorescence. Additional pups were studied at postnatal day 21 (P21) an

OBJECTIVE: We performed a systematic review to analyze the benefits of and risk factors associated with granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF) in patients with liver cirrhosis.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Embase were searched for randomized controlled trials and case-control studies that compared the use of GCSF with another treatment or control group. The Jadad and Newcastle-Ottawa scales were used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. The primary outcome studied was mortality; and the secondary outcomes were the disease severity score, liver transplantation criteria, co

Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) are vascular resident and circulating endothelial cell subtypes with potent angiogenic capacity, a hierarchy of single-cell clonogenic potentials, and the ability to participate in de novo blood vessel formation and endothelial repair. Existing literature regarding ECFCs in neonatal and adult pulmonary diseases is confounded by the study of ambiguously defined "endothelial progenitor cells," which are often not true ECFCs. This review contrasts adult and fetal ECFCs, discusses the effect of prematurity on ECFCs, and examines their different pathological

In patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis, interactions between neutrophils and endothelial cells cause endothelial damage and imbalance. Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) represent a cellular population of the endothelial lineage with proliferative capacity and vasoreparative properties. This study aimed to evaluate the angiogenic capacity of ECFCs of patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). The ECFCs of 13 patients with PR3-positive GPA and 14 healthy controls were isolated and characterized using fluorescence-activated cell sorting, capillary tube formation measurement

Bats are known natural reservoirs of several highly pathogenic zoonotic viruses, including Hendra virus, Nipah virus, rabies virus, SARS-like coronaviruses, and suspected ancestral reservoirs of SARS-CoV-2 responsible for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The capacity to survive infections of highly pathogenic agents without severe disease, together with many other unique features, makes bats an ideal animal model for studying the regulation of infection, cancer, and longevity, which is likely to translate into human health outcomes. A key factor that limits bat research is lack of breeding bat c

Colonial approaches to animal and zoonotic diseases are often scrutinized in terms of their recognition or dismissal of indigenous knowledge. In this article I examine British colonial approaches to "Mahamari plague" in mid-nineteenth century Kumaon and Garhwal, in the Indian Himalayas. Discussing two key colonial medical expeditions in the region, I argue that the eventual recognition of the validity of Kumaoni and Garhwali knowledge of Mahamari and its relation to rats intensified intrusive colonial intervention on indigenous lifeways. I examine this neglected impact of the colonial recognit

Diets containing different crude protein levels (16%, 14%, and 12%) were created to feed Bamei pigs in order to study the effect of these compositions on intestinal colonies. Therefore, 27 healthy Bamei pigs of similar weight (20.99 kg ± 0.16 kg) were selected and randomly divided into three groups for microbial diversity analysis. The results of this study show that microbial diversities and abundances in Bamei pig jejunum and caecum samples after feeding with different dietary protein levels were significantly different. Dietary crude protein level exerted no significant effect on the Shanno

The purpose of the study is to describe oncologists' perceptions and opinions about patient eligibility, guidelines, and barriers for use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), overall and stratified by their affiliation with the Oncology Care Model (OCM). In May 2018, we invited and recruited practicing US oncologists from a national database for an online survey. Level of agreement was identified using a seven-point scale, ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Of 200 participating oncologists, 70 were OCM-affiliated. Overall, 65% of oncologists agreed or strongly agree
