Communication disorders in the correctional system: a systematic review.

OBTECTIVES: Good communication is essential for resolving social conflicts, especially in closed communities such as prisons. When communication is interrupted by factors such as hearing loss or difficulties in coordination, voice, language, fluency, or disruption of any of the biological systems required to communicate, Human Communication Disorders can appear. This review aimed to identify the most prevalent communication disorders amongst prison inmates. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Systematic review through databases of studies that analyze individual inmates with communication disorders over the…

PHEROMONE COMMUNICATION IN FEATHER-FEEDING WING LICE (INSECTA: PHTHIRAPTERA).

Pheromone communication is central to the life history of insect parasites. Determining how pheromones affect parasite behavior can provide insights into host-parasite interactions and suggest novel avenues for parasite control. Lice infest thousands of bird and mammal species and feed on the host's feathers or blood. Despite the pervasiveness of lice in wild populations and the costs they exact on livestock and poultry industries, little is known about pheromone communication in this diverse group. Here, we test for pheromone communication in the wing lice (Columbicola columbae) of Rock Doves…

Vertebrate-arthropod communication dictates tick development and pathogen transmission.

Cross-species communication drives the coordination of diverse biological processes in complex systems. Rana et al. discovered that Ixodes scapularis, the tick vector of Lyme disease, produces a receptor that binds host interferon-gamma (IFNγ) in the blood meal, which orchestrates tick development, immunity, and vector competence.

Aided communication, mind understanding and co-construction of meaning.

Mind understanding allows for the adaptation of expressive language to a listener and is a core element when communicating new information to a communication partner. There is limited knowledge about the relationship between aided language and mind understanding. This study investigates this relationship using a communication task. The participants were 71 aided communicators using graphic symbols or spelling for expression (38/33 girls/boys) and a reference group of 40 speaking children (21/19 girls/boys), aged 5;0-15;11 years. The task was to describe, but not name, drawings to a communicati…

Physician Communication and Perceived Stigma in Prenatal Cannabis Use.

Cannabis has long been widely used throughout the prenatal period. However, motives for prenatal cannabis use (PCU) have not been comprehensively examined. Stigmatization has been identified as a barrier to therapeutic cannabis use and related physician communication. Such stigma may be particularly salient in the context of PCU. One hundred and three women who reported current or past pregnancy were recruited online. Participants completed a survey querying prenatal experiences, substance use, and attitudes toward PCU. PCU was reported by 35 (34%) respondents. Treating nausea and vomiting of …

Terahertz Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) for 6G Communication Links.

The forthcoming sixth generation (6G) communication network is envisioned to provide ultra-fast data transmission and ubiquitous wireless connectivity. The terahertz (THz) spectrum, with higher frequency and wider bandwidth, offers great potential for 6G wireless technologies. However, the THz links suffers from high loss and line-of-sight connectivity. To overcome these challenges, a cost-effective method to dynamically optimize the transmission path using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) is widely proposed. RIS is constructed by embedding active elements into passive metasurfaces, …

The Zoom solution: Promoting effective cross-ideological communication online.

The rise of ideological polarization in the U.S. over the past few decades has come with an increase in hostility on both sides of the political aisle. Although communication and compromise are hallmarks of a functioning society, research has shown that people overestimate the negative affect they will experience when viewing oppositional media, and it is likely that negative forecasts lead many to avoid cross-ideological communication (CIC) altogether. Additionally, a growing ideological geographic divide and online extremism fueled by social media audiences make engaging in CIC more difficul…

Impact of Obstetric Communication on Decision-to-Delivery Time.

OBJECTIVE: In obstetric emergencies, care coordination is critical in achieving a "decision-to-delivery" time of 30 minutes. Reliable communication is essential to optimize coordinated care of mother and baby. Clinical mobility (CM) platforms have been shown to improve communication during medical emergencies; however, their impact on improving decision-to-delivery times has not been shown. This study aimed to determine the impact of a new CM platform on decision-to-delivery time. STUDY DESIGN: A multidisciplinary team designed a CM platform that employs a wall-mounted panel paired with mobil…

Interorganellar communication and membrane contact sites in protozoan parasites.

A key characteristic of eukaryotic cells is the presence of organelles with discrete boundaries and functions. Such subcellular compartmentalization into organelles necessitates platforms for communication and material exchange between each other which often involves vesicular trafficking and associated processes. Another way is via the close apposition between organellar membranes, called membrane contact sites (MCSs). Apart from lipid transfer, MCSs have been implicated to mediate in various cellular processes including ion transport, apoptosis, and organelle dynamics. In mammalian and yeast…

Modern advances regarding interatrial communication in congenital heart defects.

BACKGROUND: The interatrial communication, one of the most frequent congenital heart defects, represents an important intracardiac shunt between systemic and pulmonary circulations. Direction and magnitude of the interatrial shunting depends upon several features, including defect size, shape and location, pressure difference between right and left atrium, and difference in right and left ventricular compliance. METHODS: In this review article, the presence or absence of interatrial communication, and its role, have been analyzed, as they can have a critical impact on the cardiovascular physi…

Platinized graphene fiber electrodes uncover direct spleen-vagus communication.

Neural interfacing nerve fascicles along the splenic neurovascular plexus (SNVP) is needed to better understand the spleen physiology, and for selective neuromodulation of this major organ. However, their small size and anatomical location have proven to be a significant challenge. Here, we use a reduced liquid crystalline graphene oxide (rGO) fiber coated with platinum (Pt) as a super-flexible suture-like electrode to interface multiple SNVP. The Pt-rGO fibers work as a handover knot electrodes over the small SNVP, allowing sensitive recording from four splenic nerve terminal branches (SN 1-4

The Redox Communication Network as a Regulator of Metabolism.

Key tissues are dysfunctional in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver and other metabolic diseases. Focus has centered on individual organs as though each was isolated. Attention has been paid to insulin resistance as the key relevant pathosis, particularly insulin receptor signaling. However, many tissues play important roles in synergistically regulating metabolic homeostasis and should be considered part of a network. Our approach identifies redox as an acute regulator of the greater metabolic network. Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons between two molecules

Neuroimmune communication in infection and pain: Friends or foes?

Clinically, a variety of micro-organisms cause painful infections. Before seen as bystanders in the context of infections, recent studies have demonstrated that, as immune cells, nociceptors can sense pathogen-derived products. Nociceptors and immune cells, therefore, have evolved to communicate with each other to control inflammatory and host responses against pathogens in a complementary way. This interaction is named as neuroimmune communication (or axon-axon immune reflex) and initiates after the release of neuropeptides, such as CGRP and VIP by neurons. By this neurogenic response, nocice…

Wrist Arthroplasty to Facilitate Communication in the Hearing Impaired.

Management of wrist arthritis may involve many options, including motion preserving and motion sacrificing procedures. Total wrist arthrodesis is often considered the gold standard for severe wrist arthritis, failing non-operative management. We present the first case to our knowledge of total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) for patient with rheumatoid arthritis who is also deaf, requiring sign language for communication with excellent results.

Early embryo-maternal communication in the oviduct: A review.

An intact embryo-maternal communication is critical for the establishment of a successful pregnancy. To date, a huge number of studies have been performed describing the complex process of embryo-maternal signaling within the uterus. However, recent studies indicate that the early embryo communicates with the oviductal cells shortly after fertilizationand that this is important for the successful establishment of pregnancy. Only if the early embryo is capable to signal the mother within a precise timeframe and to garner a response, will the embryo be able to survive and reach the uterus. This …
